History Question about EPCOT

Can someone tell me how Disney came to have the countries represented in the World Showcase? Were these selected by Disney or were invitations sent out and these are the only ones that replied. It just seems that there are some obvious absences and I was just curious.

Thanks for the GREAT link. It still does not mention HOW those countries were chosen. It did mention that Russia, Israel and Spain refused to fund the endeavor so thats why they are not there. I wonder if there were more than the original eleven that wanted to do it but 11 was all they had room for. The article did say there was work started on a African Pavilion but it stopped after Animal Kingdom opened. Interesting Trivia

There is actually specific room for at least an additional three or four countries.
