Car hire firm Hire for Lower limted -- which also trades under the names Autos Abroad, Direct Car Hire, USA Rent a Car and American Car Hire has ceased trading leaving hundreds of customers affected.

I myself have had problems with this company in the past --- resulting in having to claim back on my credit card

Dollar has filed a petition for winding up of company saying its owed about $2 million

But theres a twist to the saga - According to the Daily Telegragh in recent weeks hire for lower have been sending out vouchers from CAR SHOP another car hire broker with offices in Horley, Surrey....A spokesperson for Dollar said they've no problems with CAR SHOP

I wonder what the poor people who have lost money with Hire for Lower think of that -- I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Just to emphasise the point 500 customers have registered complaints with Westminster City council trading standards Dept.

I too read the report in the Telegraph about Hire for Lower/Autos Abroad because I've used them on a number of occasions in the past without any problems. I chose them because they always used Dollar (on airport at MCO) whereas Holiday Autos used Alamo (now also on airport, but not back then).

Now I book with Airline Network which uses Dollar and gives a good rate. Most people who booked with Hire for Lower will get a refund via their credit card (but the jury's still out for those who paid by debit card) but it's still not what you want at the start of your holiday is it.

Well this is very interesting!!Does this mean that Autos Abroad have ceased trading as well?

We used AutosAbroad for our trip a couple of weeks back and we had a lot of trouble with them before we went.

We didn't get our car hire voucher until two days before we travelled, and each time I called about it the staff were most unhelpful - sometimes even nasty - as to the whereabouts of the voucher. The voucher (I was told) was a Carshop voucher - which was accepted no problem at MCO

I wonder if the vouchers were being held back deliberately.....

As far as know Autos Abroad, Direct Car Hire, USA Rent a Car and American Car Hire are all trading names of the one company ie Hire for lower limited.

Cath

Autos abroad have 'crashed' too:( Hire4Lower traded under the name of Carshop at the end,and luckily these voucers were accepted by Dollar.

No Karen Car shop don't trade under their name..According to the Daily Telegragh in recent weeks hire for lower have been sending out vouchers from CAR SHOP another car hire broker with offices in Horley, Surrey....It does soind a bit strange thought, so i'd give them a wide berth to
