Hip Replacement? **Update and Ques Post 6**

My Mom had both her knees replaced in 2004 and 2005 and we just found out she now needs her hip replaced. Anyone familiar and/or have experiences? Recovery time / physical therapy?

I had my hip replaced in December of 2009 at age 42. It was probably a year before I felt like I REALLY had recovered. My PT ended in March of 2010.... after that it was just doing the every day things. My therapist said it takes younger patients longer to recover because generally they "expect more" from the hip... in other words they are more active and want to do more.

It was THE best thing I ever did.

My 83 year old FIL had his replaced about 13 years ago, and seemed to recover quickly! He still refs games, and leads exercise class at his senior center.

I am a PT in home care. Hip replacement recovery is generally easier than knee replacement. There are some precautions that must be maintained (no crossing legs, no bending the hip more than 90 degrees) but usually the motion comes back more quickly. I don't think my hip patients usually have as much pain as my knee patients and often they don't go to out patient therapy when they are done with me.

Thank you for the replies! We did hear that it was easier than the knees so we are praying for an easy and somewhat quick (as quick as possible) recovery. We go to WDW in September but she'll be in a wheelchair.

Update and Question:

Mom came home yesterday from the hospital and the rehab unit where she had about 4 days of OT and PT. My question is that she says it hurts to put pressure on it...which I assume is normal and that she has some pain radiating down the front of her leg. Is this normal? She is using a wheeled walker and I think, walking good. She is having PT come to the house.

Any info would be appreciated.

When I had a hip replacement fur years ago for some reason the ball popped out of the socket. I had a lot of pain for a couple of weeks and no progress; it was discovered when the rehab place took an X-Ray.

So if the problem continues it would be worth having the doctor order another X-Ray.

I really don't know exactly how long the recovery is, but I do know that my husband's grandmother had both knees AND both hips replaced. She has said often that the hips were a piece of cake in comparison to the knee replacements. Less painful and a shorter recovery time.

When I had pain that radiated down the leg the ortho surgeon said it was most likely femoral nerve pain... just using the leg helped... so if that is it I would think her pt exercises would help.
