It will be a year next month that my Mom has had her hip replaced. After hearing of many people who's had this operation done and say they were up and dancing a year later, my Mom is not...Her hip is better, but now she has a different kind of pain, and she is still not walking like she should. Does anyone have any stories of personal experience or maybe knows someone who had hip replacement.. Please share..Ill be back tomorrow to check and read any opinions you guys may have...

Thanks...
Chris :wave2:

Not sure what age your mother is - my dad had hip replacement surgery and he is pretty active, but still walks with a slight limp. He was about 60 years old at the time and broke his hip in a fall.

As a registered nurse, I see many people who have hip replacement surgery. Most of them - especially those with a little age on them - leave the hospital and go to rehab - stay as inpatients for a few days or weeks depending on their progress at a place that does therapy with them.

Maybe, depending on your mother's age and general physical condition, you should take her back to the orthopedic surgeon and have her reevaluated. Maybe they would take x-rays and evaulate why she is in the condition she's in with the hip. You could always get her to a physician other than the one who did the original surgery for another opinion depending on how you feel about the original surgeon.

No need to be in pain - have it checked out.

My mother 3 years ago had a hip replacement, she is 78 now and still doesn't walk like she should. Someone told my mom to be careful about moving because of the leg coming out of the hip socket. In my mother's case she believed this woman, even though her doctor hold her yes be careful but live a little.

Sorry to ramble on but perhaps she is being very cautious due to comments made by people who have had difficulty with this type of surgery. The doctor should know about the pain, some individuals recover at different times.

Good thoughts to your mother:wave:

I know several older women (75+) who have had hip replacements and are doing quite well. They don't climb mountains, but do manage everyday activities.

Physical therapy seems to be the critical issue in the recovery process. I think some doctors don't really push it hard enough for their elderly patients. PT is very hard .

My MIL had one knee (in Aug)and one hip done in Oct 2003-only months apart(not smart). Her other hip was done a few years ago. She is still not feeling great....and says the Doc says one of her legs is now longer than the other-another pain for her.She suffers and plans to see another doctor soon.:(

BIL had this surgery 18 months ago. He is 40+. He is back to all his usual activities - golf, tennis, chasing a 4 year old.

DG had this surgery aroung the same time. She is 81. She wasn't always good about her at home PT. She had unusual pain and after a vistit to her orthopedic surgeon found that she had a hairline fracture in her pelvis.

FIL just had this surgery. He is 70. He is great about his PT but being very goal oriented he is annoyed that he isn't golfing already. He only had the surgery 7 weeks ago. He was in a lot of pain at first but is doing great now.

My brother has had both hips replaced. He went from being in excruciating pain everyday to only being able to predict the weather. ;)
It has made a world of difference to him.
He was quite young with the first hip at 33 and the second at 36. I'm sure age makes a big difference.

My Mom is 62, and according to what ScarlettO said...."one of her legs is now longer than the other" This is TOTALLY what happened to my Mom!!! I was going to mention this in my first post but I thought you would think I was crazy...Now my Mom has to get a lift put on her one shoe because her one leg is shorter than the other..She is so upset about this,,,She was saying the other day "THIS DOCTOR CRIPPLED ME!!" I felt awful, what do I say to her??? She said she doesn't have any pain in her hip but now other pain is there...In her back, I think its her lower back,,And she does have bad arthritis...

We have to plan for our Disney trip in October and she cant even find a good pair of shoes or sneakers to wear...

How about a chiropractor? She is thinking about seeing one, do you think this will help??
