Hilton honors ~ how to earn points

Was wondering if someone could explain how to gain points in this program. I'm not sure I completely understand it.

You earn points by staying at any of the hotels in the Hilton chain -- Hilton, Conrad, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Homewood or Hampton Inns. They also have a few ways to earn points through their partners, like rental car companies.

That's pretty much it! No free points other than the ones for signing up and updating your profile.
