Family (group of 9) spending 9 days in 3 BR villa at HHIR. Was supposed to be 10 days but Debby pushed us back a day. Member services was excellent in contacting us a few days ahead with the message that we could adjust stay and our points would not go into holding. They worked their magic and we got 71 points back in current year.

I was prepared not to like the refurb because I loved the old low country look so much. But the new look is ok - a bit "beachy" with a little low country vibe. Certainly an improvement from our last stay when the refurb was badly needed. This is our home resort and we feel like HHIR is a stepchild in many ways.

But the staff at HHIR is the best. So very friendly and helpful. And cheerful. And we love the relaxed feel of the island vs WDW.

Apparently, a lot of the college interns left last week to go back to school so a little short staffed. The bar at the beach house closed but you can get the drinks at the FS place. Fairly long lines there yesterday.

My general comment about DVC designs has been voiced several times. Please put some grown women on the design staff - women who have wrangled kids, wet swimsuits, running gear and other paraphernalia. Throughout DVC there are small mistakes that would not be expensive to fix.....
* Refrigerator doors should open toward a counter top when possible - if there is a wall on one side and a counter top on the other - the door should open on the countertop side. Most of the time it does not.
* More hooks please - wet swimsuits, wet towels, running gear. The stacked rods make using the lower rod difficult once the top towel is wet. We brought our own folding clothes drying rack and still don't have enough drying space.
* Bathroom cabinetry - send the designers on a Disney cruise specifically to look at the ways to add storage space to a bathroom. The smaller upstairs bathroom in the Villa is 2-3 times larger than a ship's bathroom but has one tenth the storage space. Need corner cabinets, larger counter top around sink, etc.
* Mirrors please - our only mirrors are in the bathroom. No other place to check makeup or do hair. Again, in the smaller bedroom in the Villa there is a wide hallway to the tiny bathroom and closet. There's a bench there now. Instead, it should be a dressing counter - a counter top with open shelves up and down for about 20-24" of it then a stool with mirror over the counter and an electric plug. Could sit there to do makeup, dry hair, braid kids hair, insert contacts. Take the crowd out of the tiny bathroom.

But, we are having a great time - kids relaxing, grandkids having a blast.

Glad y'all enjoyed your trip to DHHIR!
This is our home resort as well and we love the cast members!

Thanks for the report! You make me much less anxious about seeing the refurb. Any good (or not good) food reports? DHHIR is one of our home resorts, and our Thanksgiving home for the last 18 (soon to be 19) years.

I agree 100%!!! This is one of my biggest pet peeves! Guess I don't have much to worry about overall!

Not sure what you mean by food reports..... At the resort? We haven't eaten anything at main resort yet. We got a couple of meals at the beach - as mentioned, they are short staffed. Long wait in line. Then, hot dogs took 30 minutes. Mickey pretzel took 15. They need more pick-up-and-go options and more entree options that don't include French fries and aren't fried. Salad, fruit, etc.

Outside the resort, we've eaten at Social Bakery and the French bakery (both good but expensive). Dinner at Crazy Crab one night, One Hot Mamas one night, both were good. Probably a Nick and Jim's later in week. We also like to cook in so we are not eating so heavy every night.

We're at DHHIR now as well. Hello neighbor! Definitely noticed the lack of hooks right away. Just adding them to the backs of the bathroom doors wound help a lot. We've been hanging towels on the tops of the doors. Not ideal, but oh well.

I have to say that I do really enjoy the refurb though. The pull down bed is great. Of course it's subjective, but I do like the artwork with the Disney characters enjoying the resort too.

I meant outside the resort, which you described. Was the Crazy Crab the one at Jarvis Creek? We've done take out from there twice (DH got us lunch from there on the way back from golf at Hilton Head National) and we really enjoyed our food. Last year we ate lunch there and enjoyed, not just the food, but great service and views. Glad to hear about dinner. Nick and Jim's? Haven't heard of that/them.

I like hooks and HHI has more than most DVC resorts. But they have to be STURDY hooks, we've stayed in more than one resort where the hooks had been ripped off the walls. Perhaps by those children. Perhaps by guests trying to put heavy bags on hooks.

Nick & Jim's is BBQ place in Bluffton. DH is a BBQ "snob" and loves it.

We tried Nectar's last night and it was fantastic.

Unfortunately we screwed up with Open Table and booked the one in Bluffton instead of the one on the island but it was a great meal in a relaxed environment. One Hot Mama's was good but a bit more hectic and loud but as always DS had his noise cancelling headphones so not too terrible.

Thanks for the good word about Nectar's. We've eaten there for breakfast, but never tried it for any other meal. I just thought of it as a breakfast place, although we enjoyed it.

We highly recommend the SERG restaurants.
Especially since you get 10% off with your DHHIR card!

The restaurant specializes in Farm to Table. Hush Puppies were good and although the deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes were as well they didn’t knock our socks off. The stars of the meal were the Root beer short ribs and the filet that was cooked perfectly.
