I just returned from my first DVC trip, which was to HHI. In summary, my expectations were exceeded, which seldom happens as I am very demanding.

We own points at VWL and VB and while my family was able to take a trip to Vero Beach this spring (I was called away at the last minute for business), I have not been to a DVC resort since our purchase in spring 2001.

The Positives.

1. The resort setting was magnificent. The villa buildings fit in beautifully with the setting and are interspersed among old oak, pine and palmetto trees and draped in spanish moss. This contrasts nicely with the nearby beach and marsh provides respite from the summer sun and with scattered hammocks and horseshoe courts and marsh set a relaxing mood.

2. The accomodations were luxuriously spacious with plenty of room for our family of 7 in a 2 bedroom. The kitchen was well equipped, the bedrooms large with lots of closet space and the in room laundry made packing a lot easier. The rooms were functionally superior and more comfortably decorated than any hotel room, condo or timeshare I have stayed in.

3. The recreation facilities were excellent and well designed. The main pool was smallish, but had a very good waterslide. There was a pier/walkway to the marsh for crabbing and fishing that was covered and included a sink. The beach house was very nice and had an air conditioned room with a pack and play so that we could let the baby sleep without having to go back to our room.

4. The resort activities were well planned, interesting and fairly priced. Our kids had plenty to do mixed in with the pool and the beach. This was in contrast to my family's Vero Beach vacation, where you had to line up every morning to sign up for any activities and they all filled up within 15 minutes.

5. The cast members were friendly and treated us and everyone very well.

6. Hilton Head is a big, highly developed island and offers a lot of dining, activities and shopping alternatives.

There were very few negatives and I am nitpicking to list these, but in the interest of balance:

1. The location on Hilton Head is a little awkward with the need to hop in a car or shuttle to travel back and forth to the beach facilities.

2. Hilton Head itself seems way overdeveloped to me with heavy traffic at certain times. I didn't particularly like the island nearly as much as the resort.

That said, I loved Hilton Head and the vacation validated for me our DVC purchase. In fact, I wish now that we had allocated our VB points to HH because of the resort and the easier access. I can't wait until we get to one of the WDW resorts, but clearly, I have been spoiled for DVC.

Dan, overall sounds like a great place. We'll be heading down the end of the month, it will be our first trip. Just wondering what your room number was, the location and would you recommend it to others

We too are a family of 7. Our first DVC trip was the 7 day cruise. Well worth it for all ages.
We are thinking of going to HHI. Do you need a car there? Is there car service or shuttle service on the Island? I know there are no dinner facilities at the resort so that would mean venturing out. Are there places accesible for dining?
THanks

seventhheaven,
We just returned from HH in May. Yes, you need a car unless you only want to eat at the 2 or 3 restaurants that are within walking distance of the resort. You could ride bikes to the other restaurants as they have paved bike paths everywhere but I'm not sure I'd like to do that in the dark. So in my opinion, yes you need a car. The resort will shuttle you back and forth to the beach house from the hours of 10-4pm I believe it was. We did not use this transportation because we had a car. There is a small breakfast/lunch spot at the resort that serves very good grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches! Yummy smoothies. Not a ton of choices but enough. We really loved HH resort. We will definitely go back.

Thanks for the helpful information. Now I know for sure that we will need a car. From all I had read it appeared that a car was needed.
I am sure we will love our trip to HHI
Thanks again

I would not recommend going without a car. One can get a shuttle to the beach house, but to go grocery shopping. liquor store (several times), outside activities or restaurants with any frequency, you will need a car.

We stayed in room 1613, which faced the marina. I would probably agree with the board and recommend a room facing the marsh, off of the pool (unless you don't mind the late night noise and would like to watch the kids from your porch). There was nothing wrong with our location or really any of the locations, but you get more into the setting facing away from the marina and the parking.

Also, an unsolicited recommendation. If you go to the Salty Dog Cafe, which is fun for the kids, just grab a burger and drinks outside. You get to enjoy the entertainment, avoid the hour long wait for a table, and the seafood is pretty mediocre inside.

We really enjoyed our brief stay at HHI on our way to WDW in May. We hadn't been to Hilton Head since early 1989. There was a defintie increase in development :(.

I wouldn't go to HHI without a car.

Thanks for the great review of HHI!

We spent a wonderful week at Hilton Head. We love it there....and yes you need a car. We had the joy of taking our son to an oral surgeon on the first day (problems after having wisdom teeth out the week before), and I went to the ER room the second day due to back muscle spasms. Both experiences were quick, took care of problems and in no way took away from our trip.

If you have been to Florida, and we have been to Marco Island, Captiva, Sanibel, Key Wey, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, San Augustine, Miami or worst to Myrtle Beach........Hilton Head is a delight. (My hubby and I grew up and later were stationed in Panama...he lived in Hawaii and Cuba prior to Panama....I lived in San Diego 4 blocks from beach..so we've been to our share of beaches). We love the quietness of the resort, the walks around the marina, trips to Savannah, and exploring. I love being able to drive to the beach or take a shuttle.

Our first day there, it rained in the AM (typical summer rain, afternoon sunny)and my hubbie dropped me, my daughter-in-law and 15 month twin girls at the beach house about 2pm, then went on to the oral surgeon. After awhile on the beach, we went up to the beach house, ate and girls took naps on lounges in shade. We took longer that we thought to get things together and didn't call for a shuttle until 4:30.....no problem when I explained the situation...they even dropped us off as close to building as possible.

We always rent a umbrella and two chairs for the week, and take an extra umbrella for added shade. I have fair skin and have had several skin cancers.

We had two cribs and two high chairs waiting for us in the room, courtesy of Disney. There is a wonderful rental place called Vacation Comfort Rentals...it's on line. We rented a twin jogger stroller for the week, they deliver and pick up. It was waiting outside our room and we called about an hour before we left and they picked it up.

We had a poolside room, upstairs, and could look and see when pool wasn't crowded to take babies down. The twins loved watching the children's pool activities. We enjoyed the Tues. night fireworks. The noise from the pool was never a problem...in fact we have had always been amazed at how little noise comes through.

My son (a worry wart about his twins) was so pleased with the beach, beach house, and pool atmosphere. He noticed it was all families, even teens had a parent, clean beaches, level beaches with soft sand, (they had been in the Cayman's the month before with friends, the sand was rough and shelly) life guards, the helpfulness and upbeat attitude of everyone......this extended to the pool at the resort.

Our friends used their parents Marriott points and stayed at the Barony Beach club last summer on Port Royal at HH. They had to walk through 3 major lobbies to get to the beach and were on the 11th floor. It was a nightmare with a sandy and wet 3 year old.

I love HH and prefer it over Vero Beach........but then I love all that is Disney............we leave for our annual July WDW trip in two weeks. In fall we will go to the new Beach Club Villas, and on to a Disney Cruise in spring break. Have we gotten our bang for our buck.....you bet. We been going to WDW when there was only a Magic Kingdom, and we stayed at the Contemporary for $55 dollars for a tower room..........(It helped that my in-laws lived in Miami and didnt travel and my hubby is an only child-WDW was exactly 4 hours away from their house)

Thanks for all the great info. We are hoping to go in March. I am SO excited! My mom & dad will be going with us.

AS my DS says, we've never had a REAL vacation before. He doesn't count the 10 Disney trips!
