Hello all, Happy 4th of July

I see there are a million places to rent bikes on Hilton Head, and many of them rent tandem bikes (bikes built for two). I'm looking to rent a bike, where I will be pedaling and my wife can just 'tag along' (she had some recent surgery where she can't really pedal and brake, but wants to ride with me).

Has anyone heard of such a bike? All the ones i looked at require both riders to pedal.

Thanks!

I have been riding tandems for years and I have never heard of a tandem without pedals in the back.

good luck

I think the only options I can think of are to get a Tandem bike or tag along and just not have her pedal. If she's under 100# you might consider a trailer if she'll fit but they're designed for kids, I'm not aware of any that will carry over 100# but there might be. Also mopeds might be a consideration. Unfortunately I don't think there are any good options.

Thanks for replying guys, I was not able to find anything either online, we'll have to come up with a Plan B.

Hilton Head Outfitters, near the DVC resort, does have tandem bikes. They do have pedals and handle bars but she would not need to pedal (as long as you're providing the locomotive action).

Any tandem I have ever been on and the one I own you both need to pedal as both sets of petals are attached to the chain. The only way to avoid it is to have her hold her legs off the petals as they will still spin.

That's why I mentioned a Tag Along as an option though I'm not sure how or if that'd work for an adult. I'm sure there must be options aimed at handicapped situations, I'd suggest talking to a full service bike shop local for the OP and possibly to a Durable Medical Supplier that deals with HC situations. Then if one finds a workable solution, start calling the bike shops at HH. They all know each other for the most part and if there's a specialty items, it shouldn't be difficult to find out who's likely to carry that from other companies.
