Pay up or risk long battle, Obama told

Barack Obama has been warned that his refusal to pay the traditional "street money" to local operatives to help get the vote out in Philadelphia today could cost him the crucial percentage points needed to knock Hillary Clinton out of the race for the White House.

In many of the city's poorer wards, the recipients look forward to these bonuses from Democratic officials - a hangover from the days of the party's old-fashioned machine politics - even though the amounts are relatively small, ranging from $50 to $400.

But as in other contests, Obama is relying on his own army of unpaid
volunteers to get the vote out. The Clinton team, meanwhile, is not saying whether it will pay out "street money".

This is big buzz in Philly, but it takes a UK paper to report it!:rolleyes1

They were talking about that on the news tonight I believe on Fox??? but they said that Hillary did give Street money and they were explaining how Obama did not and that could really hurt his campaign.

FYI all you Hillary supporters...I'm from PA and a friend of mine is a union worker and they were predicting today that Hillary is going to win by a percentage in the high teens.

That would be great:thumbsup2

I'm thinking and hoping Hillary will have a big win tomorrow and shock the Obama supporters!:thumbsup2

Welcome Pixie dust and love your green hair:goodvibes ...No they wont be shocked they will just say that that it was expected for her to win and that a big win means nothing because we can not do the math ....:lmao:

If she wins BIG here....plus having all the other BIG (NEEDED states)...and winning most all the closed (Democrat only) Prmaries...SHE WILL THE GET THE MJORITY OF THE STILL UNDECIDED SD's!:thumbsup2

The ONLY thing that concerns me is that there was a TREMENDOUS amount of voters who signed up for the Democrat party last month.
Are they Obama Supporters?
Are they GOP Mischief makers?
Are they Hillary Supporters?

.....No one really knows!:confused3

I have a feeling that they are REP and will vote for the one that they feel they can beat. So if it is not close that will be my guess. After all this talk the last week or so that all this stuff will hurt Obama in the general than he will be there man.

What is up with Dick Morris...why does he hate the Clintons so much...anyone know ? He is such a nasty man. He is talking about Hillary having worse terrorist ties than Obama and also that even if she wins tomorrow by 100 % she is still a looser AND A lover of terrorists. Colmes asked him what's up with his attitude. You wrote books about her and praised her and praised her during 95-95...so whats up.

He came back with some half baked answer that made no sense. So after listening to him I feel that he is a womanizer. He just does not want a woman in the White house. That is the impression he left with me once called on his attitude and reasoning. Even Colmes did not get why he is so bitter...I mean he was saying terrible terrible things. Worse I have ever heard anyone say. It was like he was reaching out to get his point across as strong as possible to get people not to vote for her.

Final PA Polls

Two final polls out in Pennsylvania, each showing an opposite trend. First, Zogby's final tracking poll (April 20-21) has Clinton expanding her lead to 10 points from six points:

Clinton 51 (+3 vs. previous day tracking poll)
Obama 41 (-1)
Undecided 6

On the other hand, Insider Advantage's final poll (April 21)has Obama picking up three points while Clinton is flat:

Clinton 49 (nc vs. last poll April 20)
Obama 42 (+3)
Undecided 9

Overall, Clinton's lead in the RCP Average for Pennsylvania is at 6.0%.

I can't wait to see the results. What time to the polls close?

I know Hillary will win, I just hope it is a HUGE win.

Obama is such a baby. Now he canceled the debate in NC? I swear I dislike that man more and more. The longer this race goes on it will hurt Obama more then Hillary. I have lost so much respect for Obama within the last month or so because of his attitude, stepping over his words, etc NO WAY he is ready to lead this Country!

Polls have been open for 3 hours, are there any returns yet?

I don't expect that we'll hear much until the polls close. This one should be interesting.

Just checked - everything's normal. Some Conservatives want Hillary to win and some Obama supporters are going on and on about how evil Hillary is. She even laughs in an evil way, the witch!

Oh well, all that matters is the election now.

I must admit the thought of her becoming president use to make my skin crawl but after the past couple of months she has gained my respect. They way she has to stood up to Obama and his supporters has been incredible. I hope she earns the dem nomination. I still do not agree with some of her policies but if there is going to be a dem president I hope it is her. She has proven herself to be a great American. Good Luck today!!!!

Never hear that one before :scared:

But if that is what is needed, I'll do my part! (heads out to find a donkey...)

:rotfl: just incase you did not find one (I already kissed him...on the head) :rolleyes1

Just wanted to pop in and say good luck to you guys today! I am puling for a HUGE Hillary win today

Kristine

Thanks Kristine :thumbsup2

Alright.. I was told by my co-worker (who covers everything that's been going on in this campaign much more than I do) that Obama hasn't spoken to - as in refusing to speak to -the press that's traveling with him in the past 11 days.

Please, someone, tell me this isn't true. Please tell me that he's not being this childish because he's unhappy with the debate and how things are going in the media lately? Somebody?

How does he seriously think that he's going to handle everything were he to be elected the POTUS if he can't handle hard questions from the media and Clinton?

It's so interesting how differently people see things. I was reading in the Obama thread (I'm a glutton for punishment) and the comment was made that it was debasing for Hillary to accept the endorsement of Richard Mellon-Scaife.

To me, having this guy endorse her after he spent so many years trying to tear her apart is like the ultimate payback. If it's degrading to anyone it's him RMS, not Hillary.

I've given up all hope of working today. I'm going to be on pins and needles until the results start coming in.

ETA: If that's true about him refusing to talk to the press - that's ridiculous and utterly childish.

I would rather have him endorse her than Michael Moore :rotfl:

Interesting opinion article:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/horseraceblog/2008/04/unconventional_thoughts_on_the.html

Too long for me to quote the whole thing - so I'll just quote this one part:

The only reason this pointless, self-destructive race persists is Hillary Clinton. She's a hyper-ambitious pol who won't do the high-minded thing and drop out.

I have three problems with this argument.

First, while it might be that Clinton is more ambitious than Obama, both of them get up in the morning, look in the mirror, and think to themselves, "I should be the next President of the United States." This makes them more ambitious than 99.999999% of the nation. The difference between them, if there is any at all, is in the barest of degrees. It is certainly not in kind. If the shoe was on the other foot, Obama would probably remain in the race, too.

Second, what exactly are we talking about here? Is it hyper-ambition that is driving Clinton, or is it simple scrappiness? I would submit that it is scrappiness, which is actually kind of admirable.

The Clintons are a scrappy crew, and most Democrats have appreciated this at one point or another in the past. Most were grateful for their scrappiness when the bottom fell out in 1994. In just two years, Bill Clinton went from defending his relevancy to trouncing Bob Dole. That's the thing about the Clintons. They play until the buzzer sounds. If you watch C-Span late at night, as I do, you'll see people crowd around Bill and Hillary after their speeches are over. At least half of the intelligible phrases I hear are, "Thank you!" I think this is what they're thanking them for. The Clintons hang in there. They don't quit.

Third, blaming Clinton just obscures the real problem, which is that the Democrats' nomination rules are socially inefficient. They are not designed to secure the collective good of the party, i.e. maximizing the chances of electoral victory. Instead, they are a hodge-podge of rules designed to satisfy the personal interests of politicians, state governments and parties, and interest groups. Each group gets a slice of the pie; all the while, the party's collective good remains unsecured. Why? Nobody is really in charge of the party.

Take a simple example. Super Tuesday saw 51% of all pledged delegates allocated. This was a bad idea. It greatly enhanced the likelihood that the Democrats would face the problem they currently do: no decisive tiebreaker. It would have been better to hold back several more significant states - California, Massachusetts, etc. - to serve as tiebreakers. In fact, the only reason Pennsylvania can serve as a modest tiebreaker is that the Pennsylvania legislature refused to go along with Rendell's idea to move the primary forward.

This is thanks to the state governments. They saw all of the attention and money that campaigns and media organizations devoted to Iowa and New Hampshire in 2004 - and they wanted a piece of the action. Never mind that these individual choices added up to collective peril for the party. That wasn't their concern, nor should we expect it to have been. It is unreasonable to expect California to submit willingly to a diminished role so that there might be a tiebreaker in case one is needed. Instead, what is necessary is some central agent who could force states to behave in a way consistent with the party's collective good.

Nobody like that exists. Nobody has the power to make sure that the rules are made to give the Democrats the best chance of winning in November. You can thank the party reforms of the 20th century for his. When progressives reformed the plutocratic party system of the 19th century, they chose not to make them wield power responsibly. Instead, they chose to disempower them. The power of the parties, which was once concentrated among the state organizations, was disseminated downwards - to state governments, interests groups, and politicians. The parties retain many of their old functions - like nominating presidential candidates - but they lack the power to ensure that those functions are performed efficiently.

There's nobody approaching a "party boss" these days, and the Democrats are paying the price for his absence.
