Highway in the Sky Dine Around with Wishes viewing area

DS got the non-alcoholic Polynesian Punch and it was served in this! He thought it was cool.

They serve pineapple juice in these at the Pineapple Lanai and Aloha Isle. I guess since they already serve non-alcoholic drinks in these elsewhere, it wasn't a problem at Trader Sam's. I don't know if Trader Sam's actually even serves any alcohol in this mug. I have one of these:)

I don't think they do, DS's drink was on the menu in this cup and it was non-alcoholic.

See bottom right for "No Booze Brews" so if Mom can get the Mai Tai off the menu DS should be able to ask for this and it's fun.

any more food pics or reviews from those that have gone?

We attended last night's event and most of us had a blast. We were definitely a more "roudy" group, but everyone had a lot of fun. As someone who was unsure of how it would all work out in a group setting, it ended up better than expected. The food was good (though tiny portions at the Trader Sam's - funny bc they served bigger portions of the same seared Tuna in Poly club level earlier). About 10-12 of us got a drink at the Wave even after the night ended. Meeting a great group of people that you wouldn't have otherwise is one of those intrinsic pieces you can't necessarily price. We thought the event was worth it.

Wanted to add that you can buy the glass from Trader Sams for $10- for those who were wondering. We bought two!

Also speaking to the manager of the Wave - as of now they aren't going to increase prices (who knows though), but they will be seasonally changing the menu at different times through the year. Management seems pretty excited about the event.

So . . . after talking to DS9 last night about doing this event, I started having second thoughts myself and thought, if he really wants to do a monorail crawl, I could put one together myself that might actually be more appealing to him. So, I proposed to him this morning that we do this ourselves - we go to Trader Sam's when it opens at 4 pm to enjoy the antics and "magic" then head to GF to see the decorations and gingerbread house. I was able to snag a California Grill reservation followed by the Wishes Dessert Party in MK. All in all, this will probably cost as much as the Highway in the Sky event, but I think it's a better plan for him. We'll be able to stop in the gift shops (which he loves) and maybe even get a few rides in at MK. As confident as he is that he would be fine being the only kid there, I am a bit worried that he will get bored at the event.

So, I have a reservation for 2 for the Saturday, December 17, Highway in the Sky that I'm going to drop. If anyone is interested in this date and time, please feel free to PM and we can try to coordinate a time so you can, hopefully, snag the reservation. I will post this on the December Dining Reservation thread as well. :)

Sounds like a blast! Insert some Santa (or elf, my family does both) hats and twinkling necklaces and sounds like a marvelous party!!! ENJOY!!!

@DisneyWishes14 - Kudos to your creativity! I think your idea is fabulous and you will both have a *much* better time doing that, I'm sure.

I was very much one of those "grown-up" kids. I would have *loved* doing this event and I would have been (likely) a "perfect little lady." On the other hand, as an adult with four kids, I would be a little suspect of my 9 year old self showing up for this event! Not that 9 yo me couldn't behave, but purely because I just want to be with other adults! I love kids, and I respect kids, but a child, no matter how well-mannered and intelligent, is still a child. It's not necessarily bad to include a child (as long as the child IS well-mannered/mature); it just creates a different dynamic.

But what you are doing will be so personalized to the both of you that you are going to create some wonderful memories together! You will not have the stress of being worried about what others might say or do. And he will not have the pressure to act like an adult the entire time. So again, I commend your creativity!!!

That sounds awesome.

Good info!

We wondered about the glasses and I certainly was hoping for a seasonal offering/menu change for future visits.

Yes, we once did an event with "communal" seating at Disney - and we are still in touch with new friends.

@yulilin3

DH and I would love to do this event, hope it sticks around for our summer trip. DH and I do not drink wine, do you know if any other alcoholic beverage was offered when wine was being served.

It was just wine for our night. I didn't get the feeling you could switch out for a cocktail for example...but I guess you could always ask.

Sad that people's opinions on kids seems to have changed you mind, but this sounds like a great evening!

But I was one of the lucky guests who got to sit in a broken down monorail for 1 1/2 hours. It was not fun.
Although the temperatures were in the 80's, the Monorail had no ventilation. I'm sorry that you find my post negative, but whenever I look at the monorails, I think of my experience. Wouldn't you?

I hope this is a fail. Because each upsell event takes free space away from then rest of the guests. So now the firework viewing deck at the Contemporary is gone, the riverboat is offline for 3 hours a day for the dessert party, the train station roped off, and the Poly Bungalows ruined the Wishes viewing area on the beach. I am naming just the ones I can recall off the top of my head.

I'm beginning to think that the Disney execs wander around the property and notate locations where guests are congregating. Then they sit in brainstorming sessions trying to think of ways to make a profit from those areas, and voila that area you where you and your family used to watch fireworks for free is no longer available.

I am sure that they do!!
It!s all about ever increasing profits!

They took away FP viewing for
Wishes Fireworks & FOF Parade!

Also,
our FP seats were awful thus trip(Nov. 30th$. They replaced the good FP
Seats with Dinner Pkg Seats!!

We will now have to Book the Fantasmic! Dining Plg for 2017!!

It's really ok! As confident as DS9 was that he would enjoy the event, I really began to think he would probably fade around the time the cheese platter was served, LOL! With the event I concocted, we'll really be able to do all the things he enjoys at the monorail resorts, he can order exactly what he likes at Cali Grill and we'll get to see the fireworks inside the park (along with Once Upon a Time which we haven't seen). Plus, I was able to coordinate a transfer of the reservation to a fellow DIS'er who is celebrating something pretty special on their trip, so it's a total win for everybody!

My DH is curious: he's not much of a mixed drink person, would he be able to opt out of the mixed drinks and have a glass of wine instead?

Sounds like you are going to have a great evening. I hope you and your son have a great night with many wonderful memories.

Just returned from a pre-Christmas stay and attended this event this week! Let's just say I am glad I took the bus instead of driving! Everything was delicious and great fun was had by all; however, I definitely felt tipsy on my walk back to the Magic Kingdom to find a bus to my resort! The event badges are now plastic and on a quality lanyard. Water is also being passed around in between the drinks and encouraged by Cast Members. Don't skip the water! Even though the event was indeed fun, I would probably not do it again, unless I was going with someone who had never been?

My DS9 and I did our DIY-Highway in the Sky on December 19 and, since you were all so encouraging, I wanted to report back that it was a BLAST!!! We got into Trader Sam's right at 4 pm and had "cocktails" and apps. Then on to the Grand Floridian for a treat from the gingerbread house (which we saved as I knew we would still be eating a lot!). Off to the California Grill for a 5:50 pm ADR where we got to see both Jingle BAM AND Frozen Holiday Wish from the observation deck. Then, MK! We attempted a quick ride on BTMRR (I was able to snag a FP+ earlier in the day), but got rained out. Luckily, the weather cleared and it was on to the Wishes Dessert Party with Plaza viewing. We were stuffed, but still managed to eat some desserts and had the most amazing view of Wishes - the best we've ever had! All in all, believe it or not with ALL that we did, cost was about $20 less than if we had done the actual Highway in the Sky Dine Around event, but that is probably due to the fact that I didn't have any alcohol at any of the venues. We will definitely do this again. I am so glad we opted to do this instead of the actual event, and so happy the event inspired our DIY evening! It's definitely something we will never forget :) Thank you all, again, for your words of encouragement!
