Day 1 Thursday 20th March Arrival in NYC via Paris

Early rise today up at 3am for taxi at 4am, check in goes smoothly and after asking we are told we wont see our cases till New York JFK, at this point Danny decides to ask what happens if they don’t arrive and proceeds to wind me up for the next hour till our flight to Paris, we get through security okay, kids get hot chocolates and pastries, our flight is late by 20 mins, flight goes smoothly although the seat issued to Jacquie doesn’t exist but the crew sort it out and its all okay, we get served a continental breakfast during flight and despite a late take off we arrive on time at Charles De Gaulle, although it takes awhile to get to the gate as the airfield is huge, we arrive in terminal 2F and we need to walk to 2E for our NY flight we have 3 hours to kill before boarding but decide to get through security and just spend the time browsing and a lunch, security line was huge, Danny set off detectors but no one noticed (I kid you not, he was not searched or approached, we never even showed our boarding cards to get through, pretty scary really ), once through I find the prices are expensive and with the exchange rate bloody expensive, we get 3 Chicken Salad Baguettes, 1 Caesar Salad, 3 juices, 1 wine total €40 (£32),

But I do pick up a bargain in duty free and get a litre of Pernod and a litre of 3 yrs old Havana Club for €30 (£24), give kids some euro’s and they buy a Paris souvenir each just to prove we touched French soil, tried to use free Wi-Fi but laptop couldn’t connect for some reason ( it did say free public Wi-Fi on scanner but not sure if it was meant to).
Our flight boards on time but we are delayed by an hour as they need to remove luggage of people who never showed up for flight, at this point Danny decided to giggle about the luggage again but after a Homer and Bart bonding session he soon sees the error of his ways. The AF plane has the seat back TVs with on command entertainment including games, once in the air drinks are served, all beverages are free so be rude not too partake in some champagne to celebrate the beginning of our holiday, we are also given a menu for dinner

Choices are for starters Arles style tart of bell peppers, tomatoes and eggplant, main meal choice of roasted chicken fricassee with spicy tomato sauce and semolina with chives dish or casserole of fish and vegetables au gratin, followed by Camembert cheese, yogurt, apricot crumble, Coffee and Tea, also a side note to help self to drinks during flight in self service area of plane.

The meal is very filling and actually tastes very nice, Stephanie gets her veggie meal with no hassle, although she’s unhappy its vegan as it lacks taste in some parts but overall she is happy, we do the usual on the flight, fill in the green cards etc, mess one up refill it in, watch films and play games, and make use of the free bar, a couple of hours before landing we get served a light tea a sandwich, biscuits, fresh juice, tea and coffee, Stephanie gets a veggie option to this as well. We land on time despite leaving an hour late, we arrive in immigration hall at JFK 4:35pm and by 5:15pm we are getting our suitcases, we should have been out quicker but the first line we got sent to the guy served 1 couple and it took him 30 mins luckily another officer saw our plight and called us over, he was quite chatty and pleasant, once through immigration I called Carmel car service for a pick up in a mini van pre-booked before we left. Once guy understood my accent our van was there within 10 mins, our driver was friendly and chatty we got a little history lesson on Queens as we drove through from JFK, his vehicle was spotless and odourless, he slowed so I could get some pics as we drove

Traffic was heavy but we still arrived at Radio City Apartments within the hour, (recent reviews had not been great on Carmel, but they where good for us picking up, hope they are as good taking us back), check-in went smoothly at RCA handed over voucher from unpackaged and that was it no deposit or credit card swipe, our room was on 2nd floor (1st to us) room 2I a 1 bed roomed apartment, first impression was wow, it was quite roomy, pleasantly decorated and in general a great price for NY at Easter at £125 a night as we had changed from a 2 star at £110 a night, the bedroom had 2 double beds and a TV plus drawers etc, bathroom had bath, shower, hairdryer etc, living area/kitchen had TV, table, 4 chairs, sofa, fridge plus large ice box, coffee maker, microwave cooker, cupboards, plus free Wi-Fi in room

While the ladies unpacked me and Danny went exploring, and boy is NY jumping totally amazing the hustle the bustle on every street, location of RCA is great within 15 mins we had seen Rockefeller Centre , Radio City music hall, Times Square, M&M world, NBC experience store plus a restaurant bar that made Hooters girls look over dressed, before heading back to room we got juice from a store for room, and we got food from Backstage Deli next to out hotel, the owner was Greek and he was very friendly asking where we where from and when we arrived etc, we got 2 Philly cheese steaks & fries, 1 Cheeseburger & fries, 1 toasted cheese grill & fries total cost $30, sorry no pics but was very nice, we relax in room eating and we are all knackered as its now midnight our time, DD and DS head to bed at 9pm NY time but watch TV for an hour DW crashes out along with them, I use the free Wi-Fi and hit the sack around 11pm

Off to a good start....

Good thing you have "tv" to watch and free bar ;)

Sounds like you enjoyed NY...the city that never sleeps...

oh, and btw, you didn't get a REAL Philly cheesesteak...you have to go to Phila. for that :rolleyes1

off to read more :surfweb:

i am glad you had fun in my hometown but Bubba's Mom is right. i have had real philly cheese steaks in the city of brotherly love and let me tell you it is really something.
In new york you needed to have Pizza, NOT that ray's crap or those small knockoffs but there are a few places that do it better than anywhere. like patsy's in manhattan, Mario's in the Bronx (Which is really a full blown restaurant that serves pizza) and Totono's near the brooklyn Aquarium. If you ever visit the city again and want it PM and i will give directions

Great start to your trippie. It's so cool that you guys changed planes in a different country. Living in Europe would be so cool. You can be in another country as quick as we can drive to the next state. Oh well, I'll stop dreaming of Europe & move along to day 2. See ya there! :wave2:

We are om;y an hour from England so thats another country for us:goodvibes it was weird though go to France then backwards to the States

We can be in Orlando in an hour. Same state. Not exactly the same as being in another country, unless we go to Epcot. ;) It really is cool that the European countries are so easily accessible to those who live there. ::yes::
