Has anyone out there had a problem with high winds during the "rainy" season? Geez, do these things actually tip over and cause major damage, or is there a way of setting them up that reduces or eliminates the risk?

As you can probably tell, i am scared to death of getting stuck in one of these things (my hubby loves the idea of a camper - i however am the doubter)in the middle of a major storm. I love the tornado scene in Oz, but don't want to be a part of it?

I don't know about FW, but we camp all the time at the beach and there will be at least 1 night that we have a storm and have high winds. The only problem we had was with the awning. Other than that...just alot of flapping of the popup...but not bad. Like I said...the awning is the biggy.

I think that the trees should protect you from all but the worst winds. I have heard of people having problems at the beach, but the winds are always high at the beach, and there's usually nothing to break the wind.

Of course, if there were a tornado, even a motor home wouldn't be safe. I'm sure a CM would tell you if conditions were unsafe and get people to a safe location, like the comfort stations or the check-in building.

You should, of course, take the awning down if it does get too windy.

If it makes you feel safer, most pop-ups have little hooks on the opposite site of the camper from the awning. These are used for a tie-down and it keeps the camper swaying so much in storms.

we have been in major storms with big gusts that sent some tents flying with no problem at all and the gusts were in the 40-50 mph range. If you can leave your screens open we found the wind just goes through the pop-up without rocking the trailer too much - in fact my parents in a hard sided trailer had a lot more rocking than we did.

Tammarie,
You have hooks on your popup to tie your camper down? How do you do that? I guess my popup doesn't have that.

It was a pretty new pop-up--a 1999. I specifically asked about the hooks when we took delivery. I don't think some of the older ones have them. I know our 84 pop did not. We never used them though. I believe you could have some installed if you wanted. Just look at some of new pop ups and you could see where they are placed.

Tammarie,
Thanks, I will go and check them out. We have a 1995 Dutchmen popup.
