DH teaches physics and is wondering if Twitter could be useful for his students. Any ideas or experiences (even opinions) are welcome. Thanks!

Twitter I would stay away from. It's more of a social thing. Does he have a link though the school's site? All of my kids classes/work/homework is online so there's no question what's due. Plus if anyone has a question they can email the teacher. All their textbooks are either online or CDROM too. No lugging those ancient textbooks home.

DD's Band teacher uses Wiggio and it works really well. She posts assignments and communications. A seperate section for parents. She can also send txt message to her students' phone notifying any late start or school cancellation (Band is first block)

Our school encouraged us to start using this. I tried and failed. I went to the trouble to start an account, and I got three followers: my husband, another teacher, and a parent of a student who isn't in my classes but who is involved in an extra-curricular that I lead.

When I talked to my classes about this as a way to keep up with things, a "can you believe she's so stupid?" giggle went through the class. Apparently Twitter is un-cool amongst teens.

It's not worth my time to keep a Twitter updated. I do better with my school website.

My niece's band teacher uses Twitter for the band parents and kids. My sister thinks it's a good way for him to keep in touch.

Twitter is a pet peeve of mine, the day one of my kid's teachers started using twitter for his or her class would be the day that I transferred my kids out of their class. All of my kids teachers just have web sites or send e-mails.

Our state DOE had a tech training where teachers created a twitter account. They are encouraging twitter as a way to keep in touch with parents. The two teachers in our building who went created a twitter and haven't used them since.

No but I like using a blog or a web page. It's great to post assignments and put extra credit on. I have also posted short videos for kids to watch. I set it so that I have to confirm posts before they are added. If you can't control what kids put you can have problems.
