DS is a jr this year and we are getting his ring for Christmas. Total cost $360. It is already bought , he likes it and I am ok with it as he is happy. But I wondered if this was about the average cost? It seems a little high for something he will wear for 1 1/2 years. Of course everything about high school is a little high anyway right?!

I did request he at least wear it until after Christmas before handing it to his girlfriend. LOL

That's about right for a price. I think I paid about that much last year.

Funny thing is, I think that's about what they cost in 1980!:lmao:

Sounds about right.

I did not get my older dd a HS ring. DH and I don't have one either. I told dd we will get her a college ring.

I remember them costing around that when I was in high school 15 years ago.

I didn't get a class ring because I thought they were a waste of money. Class rings must be "out" in my area, I never see anyone wearing them anymore and my nieces didn't get them.

I think mine was $25.00 (of course, that was in 1974)

Thanks all!

It makes me feel better to know the price was in the ballpark. Most of his friends got a ring. He has enjoyed high school so I am fine with it being a memento of his hard work and growth over these years. I know it will end up in a drawer so I can understand not getting one but it seemed important to him now. When it comes time he can have a college ring also if it is important then. DH and I both have high school rings but didn't care about a college one.

I have seen people wear their college rings well into adulthood or even their whole lives. I have never seen anyone wear their HS ring after a few years.

I think my high school ring was around $200 in 1984...it was white gold with a facet cut White Sapphire. It really sparkled in the light. :teeth:

I think mine was about $250 back in 1998. Biggest waste of money ever....wore it 2-3 times. Didn't bother with a college ring. Personally I think they are pretty cheesy...not sure why I ever got mine.

Mine was $150 back in 2000 and honestly all it does is sit in my jewlery box. I only wore it for a few months after getting it.

Mine was about that back in 1986 or 87 when my mom bought it. I loved that ring.

I bought and paid for my own class ring my sophomore year in high school. That was in 1988. It was $230 (mine was 14k yellow gold). My son is a sophomore this year and just bought and paid for his class ring. It was $212 (he wanted the celestrium - silver). It is being delivered today. Can't wait to see it! :goodvibes

My daughter just picked up information about class rings yesterday (Jostens sells to our school). I only paid attention to the girls' rings, and they ran $70-500. The "not-real-silver" rings are very affordable, and silver is much more popular than gold among teens right now.

It might not be that they're "out" -- it might be that the kids are choosing non-traditional styles. I don't quite "get" the point of choosing a high school ring that doesn't LOOK LIKE a high school ring -- I mean, isn't that the point? -- but LOTS of girls are choosing "fashion rings" these days. They look like rings you could buy anywhere else, but they have the school name engraved in tiny letters. You could easily THINK that these are just regular rings.

Whereas I only know two people who even own college rings. No one I knew in college bought one.

My DD's ring should be coming in sometime between now and Christmas. It is from Josten's, and also the "cheapo" silver metal. Her ring was $155.

My DH and I did not get rings in high school. DD really wanted one, and she paid for it with her own money. I couldn't really complain about the price...DD could have picked a far more expensive ring.

I bought mine in 2007 and its white gold with a Mother of Pearl and two diamonds and it cost around 450. A little pricey but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my ring I never take it off.I got mine at Herff Jones. They are pretty good about polishing it when I bring it in. I had some trouble with the post staying in my pearl and they replaced my ring for me.
