You have a map, whose width is X. The length of the map is X+15. The map is in a frame which has a width of 5 all around. The area of the map plus frame is 600. What is the area of the map? Show work.

Go to youtube.com and check out math tutorials from yourteacher. They really helped me when I recently took a math class.

Does your text show you how to set up a problem like this?

You make yourself this equation:

(x + 5) multiplied by (x + 20) = 600

Solve for x.

Then the area of the map is (x) multiplied by (x + 15) (whatever x turns out to be).

Not too hard.

area of border = 2(5x)+2[5(x+15)]+4(25)
=10x+10x+150+100
=20x+250

first equation: area of map=600-(area of border)
=600-20x-250
=350-20x

second equation: area of map=x(x+15)
=(x^2)+15x

Therefore, 350-20x=(x^2)+15x
Then just factor. There may be a calculation error somewhere in there, but the method is correct I believe, enjoy!:)

The width of the picture is x, Therefore, with the frame, the width is x + 10 (there is an extra 5 units on either side)

The length of the picture is x+15, and therefore with the frame is x + 25

Therefore, the area of the picture is the product of the length and the width:

(x+10) (x+25) = 600

x^2 + 35x + 250 = 600

X^2 + 35x - 350 = 0

Solve the quadratic to get your answer.

Problem cannot be solved with a calculator, and it was part of 30 questions in 55 minutes. The answer for x is around 8.12 if that helps anymore...

Since you can't use a calculator, then solving the quadratic would be too time-consuming (since you'd have to use the quadratic formula)

Therefore, I would set up a table to solve

x/ length/ width/ area/

x/ x+10/ x+25/ 600/

10/ 20/ 35/ 700/

8/ 18/ 33/ 594/

8.1/ 18.1/ 33.1/ 599/

8.11/ 18.11/ 33.11/ 600/

Therefore, the area of the map is (x) (x+15) = (8.11)(23.11) = 187.4 units
