High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

Do your kids' school require the students to take the ASVAB?

Our's does and I don't know why exactly. It always has. Both of my sons took it and dd will have to next year.

It was kind of irritating because the older one never had any interest at all in the military and he suddenly started getting all kinds of mail and calls from them as well as colleges. He was a baseball player and got a great letter wanting him to play baseball for the Navy.

At least younger son had some interest so the mail was relevant. Except for the Navy wanting him in the submarine program. No, not, nada, wasn't going to happen :rotfl:

Dd has 0 interest so lots of mail to go in the trash.

I'd never even heard of it, so I'm thinking I would have if it was required. Certainly seems like something that should be offered if interested, but not required.

DD not finish any of her sections on the PLAN test either. Math was the one where she had the most left. She left 10 blank, but had gotten all of the ones she did answer correct. I don't think they were given a warning, as I asked why she didn't just fill in something and she said it was pencils down.

Its for the military. And unless they go in right from high school, they will have to take it again. I have never understood why they make them take it but every junior does.

No mandatory ASVAB testing at dd's school, only those interested in joining the military take it.

dd has picked the classes she wants to take next year, one of them being at a vocational school and we go Thursday to an Open House, she wants to take a Vet Assistant course.

my dd is planning to try vocational school for a semester next year too - but for teaching. Hoping it'll be a good decision for her.

My dd will be graduating 2016. She has no idea what she would like to study in college. Yesterday, she did Highland aptitude testing. I hope she gets some feedback that is helpful to her.

I am so glad to find this thread. I hope we can help one another with this process.

Our high school doesn't offer ADSVAB.

I think DD and I may visit colleges over spring break.

So far, second semester is going well for DD. She really likes her Honors Chemistry class, and feels like she would like to major in chemical engineering when she gets to college. She is playing soccer for her HS team as well. Still all A's!

Right now, we are waiting to hear if she gets into the North Carolina School of Science and Math. It is a highly selective residential HS for Juniors and Seniors throughout the state of NC. She has her application in, and the admissions decisions will be made at the beginning of April. If she gets in, it will mean a lot- the school is recognized nationally for their math and science excellence.

Week before last, I attended a Guidance Counselor meeting with dd to make a back up plan in terms of electives in case she doesnt isn't able to get into the technical school for Vet Assistant. We won't know until after Spring Break if she has or not.

This week I take her to take her Learner's Permit test:scared1::banana: So she has been studying. THen from there I have to find out when the next "On the Road" portion for Driver's Ed is.

DD will go back tomorrow from spring break so will start looking at classes for next year then. She hasn't shown any interest in the vo-tech classes yet, but they will talk to them more about them before they make their schedule.

Choir hasn't given her much time to think about anything really! Their director is making some amazing opportunities for them. We just got back from a trip to DC. They sang at St. Patrick's Cathedral. BEAUTIFUL church! And they did awesome. It was a great feeling hearing church members behind us saying "they sound absolutely beautiful!" And then to hear the A Capella group sing the national anthem on the steps of the Capital was just the best feeling in the world. Such an honor.

In April they have State festival, 2 concerts, and will perform at the alumni event that the school holds each year to honor the seniors, plus several other smaller performances.

Whew!--and we already know next year will be even more!

Oh my goodness! I am so glad you posted about course selection for next year. Our course selection forms are due on Thursday.

Nice! We just got a letter today about an informational meeting being held in a few weeks about a Summer 2015 trip for the auditioned choirs to perform in Hawaii!! Good thing we have a year to save and for me to emotionally prepare! DD has never been away from home for more than 1 night!

We just did course selections two weeks ago also. DD is super excited for next year because she finally gets real electives (not ones pretending to be electives that are really core subjects, like Spanish :rotfl:) Plus she finished her PE requirements so that frees up another class period.

We did discover that the class that she really needs to be in Senior year is Art 3 since she wants to go to an Art college and that is when they do portfolios. So I signed her up for Art 1 this summer (paying quite a bit for it out-of-pocket) so that she could do Art 2 next year and Art 3 Senior year.

She also received a letter asking her to interview to work on the school newspaper next year (I believe her English teacher recommended her) and she was very happy to be accepted for that. I hope a couple of years working on the school newspaper will be good for her college applications also.

So if everything goes well, she will have:
AP US History
English 3 Honors
Pre-Calc
Art 2
School Newspaper
Creative Writing

I'm worried that most of those are only offered 1 or 2 periods though so we may have to shuffle some things around.

She wanted AP Physics also but they have to take that with Calculus so she is saving that for next year.

What is everyone else's Junior (yikes, how can we be getting this close) taking?

My DD was invited to join the National Honor Society and she just finished the application it is due tomorrow. She also won first place in her Skills USA districts and her group is going to the state finals in may.
She is also applying for jobs.

My DD would looove to be able to take Creative Writing in lieu of PE!! We have 4 years of PE here......BOOOOO! Also, in the same boat with the Math. She wasn't put on the right "path" in middle school, so she's chosen no Science for next year. So she's got:

AP English
AP US History
AP Music Theory
Honors Algebra II
Spanish III
Choir
Yearbook (In lieu of Lunch / Study Hall)
PE

So, this will be her "fun" year, because Senior year AP Physics will eat up 2 class periods.

Yeah, we already know our choir will be going to Orlando next year and sing the national anthem at a Orlando Magic game and they will perform at either WDW or Universal and then dd's senior year they will be traveling to NYC and he is already coming up with some amazing performance opportunities. So, I see much fund raising in our future.

The A Capella group has really taken off. This is the first year to have it and they have performed at numerous school and community events. They performed at two university basketball games and will have a concert in April. And next year they will get the chance to work with Home Free, Penatonics and Philharmonic.

I don't know how some of the kids do it. Its a lot of hard work and most of them keep a high gpa plus are in other activities. But they love it.

I think we have sorted out our courses for next year:
AP lit
APUSH
PAP calculus
PAP bio
Worldview
Spanish 3
Econ (1 semester)
Pottery (1 semester)
Study hall

I just can't believe my baby is taking all of these big girl classes.

I still haven't figured out why our district doesn't offer AP English 3. DD rocks at English so that would have been great for her. At least she will be able to take AP English Lit next year.

Yeah, if she gets all the classes she wants, this should be an easier year for DD also. I hope that doesn't mess her up too much her senior year. I wanted her to take Spanish 3 but she hated Spanish this year (really bad teacher) and it would be the same teacher next year. I hope that doesn't come back to bite her later.

Didn't even think of this. Our school is really big, so there are usually multiple periods that any particular core class is offered. However, I know there will be only one class (period) for Choir, Yearbook and AP Music Theory. I think there are less Spanish III classes, too. Hope the scheduling works out.

4 years of gym here too. And a Health class that is impossible to schedule so most kids take it during the summer. It is by a lottery and DD didn't get in. I found out she is high on the waiting list so we're crossing our fingers. Here is her schedule: I think she's nuts!

APUSH
AP Physics
AP English
Calc BC
Spanish 4H
Latin 2
Band/Chorus
gym
