WE'RE BAAAAAACK! Oh, man, this is long...Move-in went great! And very few tears were shed. One of DDs best friends went down there with us, which really helped Dd make the transition.
We left yesterday with DH driving our SUV and DD driving her little Jeep Wrangler. We were somehow able to fit EVERYTHING into my Expedition. Well, it *is* a big tank of a car.
Still, she had 16 items including her 4 large suitcases and 7 cardboard boxes filled to the brim. The weather was terrible on the drive down. We got about 50 miles south of Atlanta when the sky went black and it POURED rain and lightning. So bad that DD had to pull over--she couldn't see a thing!
We were about 10 miles ahead of her, so I was able to text the friend and give them a heads up as we went along. We went in and out of storms all the way to Valdosta. That's about 270 miles from my house. The girls were utterly exhausted by the time they got to our hotel.
Upon arrival DD and her BFF decided to put on their bikinis on and hop into the hot tub for awhile. They didn't even want to get anything to eat! DH and i walked over to Texas Roadhouse to get a steak. We got our steaks and i was going to put Steak Sauce on mine. Some maroon had unscrewed the top just enough that when i shook it up steak sauce went all over me and the booth i was sitting in.
they had to get me a wet cloth from the kitchen. I even had steak sauce in my cleavage! 'Course, that only makes me a little more desireable to DH.
We all turned in around 11 because she had the 8-12 move in time.
This morning we managed to get to school around 9:30. She had to park in the lower 40, so we picked up and took her to the dorm. It wasn't too awfully hot, in the high 70s and we were able to unload on the shady side of her dorm. DH was exhausted just helping to get all her stuff to the curb so he sat down with a bottle of water while DD checked in. She called us to say she got to her room and was setting up her computer.
Um, you've got about 500-lbs of crap out her in the yard, dear.
thankfully, there was a church campus youth group there and they happily picked up a bunch of the stuff. Good thing, because her dorm has NO ELEVATORS. All handicapped students room on the 1st floor. Everyone else schleps their stuff up 9 flights of stairs.
DDs roommate was not there, but she moved in Monday. Apparently, she is part of a leadership program so she was doing that. But she had her part of the room all cute and tidy. She brought an electric broom, so maybe that;s a good sign. The roommate left her the sweetest note welcoming her to VSU.
The room is pretty small, especially with all DDs stuff in the middle of the floor and 4 adults in the room. She threw us out and DD & her BFF set everything up. Then she invited us up. Her room is so cute! She and the roommate didn't even try to coordinate their stuff, but everything matched~! And the roommate has her guitar, keyboard and clarinet with her, so obviously she is very musical. DD is too(her instrument is voice). I'm hoping they will be a good match.
By that time it was getting really hot and we were hungry and thirsty. Valdosta is only about 16 mles from the Florida line. Dd led the way to the cafeteria and she proudly produced her student ID so she could get her meal(we had to pay, of course.) They ate there during orientation, so she knew her way around the pizza, sandwich, and salad stations. It's a lot different from my little college. Back then, there were no choices--you ate what they were served or you went starving! There were a LOT of choices, even a cereal bar--for lunch!
After lunch, DD headed to the bookstore to pick up her books. We did the pre-packaged thing, mainly because I didn't want to be any more stressed out that we already were. She lost her phone at some point and had to back track around. It was lost for about 30 min and she was ready to panic--no phone! at college! the horror~!
But she found it. Then the BFF lost her sunglasses and the search started all over again. DD lugged her $437 worth of books all the way across campus in that heat and up the 9 fllights of stairs to her room. DH & I wisely stayed down in the nice cool lobby.
After that, it was time to drive her over to pick up her car and get her parking sticker.
By then DD was hot, tired and cranky. Fortunately, her BFF understood and didn't take it personally. The parking deck is about 4 blocks from campus, so we put her back into the car and went for a Target run. The water down there is nasty--the BFF pronounced it "booty water". You know how bad Florida water can be, all sulpher-y. so we got her a flat of water and a laptop lock, plus some Crunch-n-Munch.
And by 3pm it was time to go. You all would have been proud. i didn't cry at all. DD teared up a little and her BFF was crying. It was a 4 hour drive home, but at least it was pretty weather. Hot, about 99 degrees. On the way home DD texted us 19 times
She let us know that the boys had stripped off their shirts and were playing football under her window. and that she went over to the dinng hall and got a huge salad for supper. And they have a STarbucks in the Student Union building. And that they were holding Game Night at her dorm, so she was going to join that.
I think Dd is going to be okay. She's pretty easy-going, get along with everybody. And it looks like she's going to throw herself into it. I was afraid she might want to be too connected to her friends. And they have been texting. Her other BFF moved into UGA this morning, so they were exchanging pics of their rooms.
They're all going home for Labor Day. The first football game is in two weeks and they're playing *my* alma mater for homecoming in October, so I know we'll be back for that. All it all, this has been a very successful day. I don't expect to hear from her quite so much in the coming days.
