I want to start a site like badshoe.com, but show what people will wear when hiking. We just got back from Yellowstone and the Tetons, and when we went on our 4 mile hike we couldn't believe what we saw people preparing to start the hike were wearing. Flip-flops! Open-toed sandals! Shoes with a slight heel!

This hike has a path to it, but there is a LOT of climbing, many rocks, some scrambling, and tree roots. Some of these people didn't even have any water. One woman was carying her Starbucks latte. I guess 4 miles in the mountains in weather that can turn on you at any moment just isn't wat it used to be!

We did see one guy in flip-flops at the end. He hadn't put on sun block and was as red as a lobster. Blister time. He jumped into the lake nearby to cool off, the GLACIER fed lake, and screamed. We just laughed. They guy next to me said "notice there are no beaches around here? There is a REASON"

Let me see if I can post a picture:

It is a bit disturbing how lightly some folks take their own health and safety sometimes. They say, "live and learn," but it seems to me that some things you could read-up on in advance and skip right to the "learn" part.

:rotfl: I see these people everywhere. Wanting to be fashionable, ending up looking very silly! I hope I teach DD7 better!

Nice pic by the way!

I feel like you do which is why when we went to Disney, I *made* my DD (14) buy a pair of good walking sandals. They had a nice supportive sole, nice upper construction, etc. Well, they absolutely KILLED her feet at Disney. We had to go into a gift shop at MGM and get her a pair of some rubberized, Mickey Mouse slide on sandals. They were fine for the day, but too "goofy" for her. The rest of the week she work her cheap, Old Navy flip flops and was very comfortable. Go figure. :confused3

I remember when we went to the National Rocky Mountain Park in CO. We were coming down a switchback mountain, which was fairly easy to go down. We climbed the other side of the mountain to go up, to get to a glacier lake.

Well, on our way down, I met a family, parents and 3 kids. The dad was being a commando and not waiting for his wife and kids. We had to stand aside for him as he passed us. When I met his wife, she asked me if they sold water or anything up there. I ended up giving her 2 water bottles and a sandwhich for her kids. The youngest had to be only 2-he was so red -faced and so was the mom. They clearly had no idea what kind of conditions they were dealing with. Right before we left the family, the mom said to me, "this clearly is not WDW".

We also saw a couple in the 50's hiking. She had on white heeled shoes like older people wear to church, she also had the big white purse too.

I think the National Park Rangers post how many people they have to get off the mountain each day.

I took DD6 to our local zoo on sunday. It has a bit of rough terrain so you should wear an appropraite type of footwear. I still can't believe that I saw this woman pushing a stroller wearing at least 4" heels...and she looked about 7 months pregnant. Yikes...

I guess I am one of the ones people stare at!! I wear "heels" at WDW - not when "doing" the park but when we go back into a park for dinner I usually dress up a tad from the normal park attire. Last weekend we went to the BD and I had on short black sandal heels...:)

OTOH, while at Knoebel's last week, I saw a woman wearing shorts, a T, and the high top Timberland boots that men usually wear... it was 98 degrees!

Darwin had it right? (no debates! ;) )

Some people, eh, Sonya? You wonder what the heck they are thinking.

Sounds like a great trip, what a neat picture. Any kaki gori there?? Sam is getting SO big. :cool1:

We were at Disneyland Paris in July. We dressed the way we always dress for a park - shorts, light shirts and very comfortable sneakers. I was very surprised at the number of women walking around in the standard (for Paris) little black dress and high heels. And they all were smoking while pushing strollers. It sure wasn't WDW...

Back to WDW in 16 days :bounce:

I wore hightop converses in wdw, they started hurting on the last few days, but the first three or four days they were fine.

All I can think of is - Yikes! In Yellowstone? He could have had the opposite, and deadly, experience!

When we were in Yellowstone, we ended up not going on any longer hikes because of the heat, but I can see how on some trails people might think they're only going a short way and then end up covering a lot of ground. That said, I made everyone wear tennis shoes on all of the days we were in Yellowstone and we kept water handy so we'd be prepared for whatever.

You know, I'm all for fashion and looking good, but not when I have to walk a ton. I wear my nice tennis shoes to the park, the zoo, six-flags. I love my flip-flops too, but not for those places.

This hike was in the Tetons or he could have had a different experience, disykat!

No Dan, no kaki-gori up there, we get our fix now at my best friend's Topical Sno stand. Free kaki-gori...... can it get any better?

Okay i was one of those people who hiked in flip flops but I didn't actually know I'd be going on a hike. I though we were going to check out a lake near Lake Louise but it turns out you have to do some hiking to get the best view. Oh well, I got through it unscathed as you can see...
