Hiding on the ship during disembarkation

Yes, but I am sure we all can totally imagine someone (mentally ill like that lady, or otherwise) just wanting to soak up the ship for a few more days. More Golden Mickeys, more Aladdin, more Cabanas, more MSDA, more whatever.

I mean, when you think about it, there's a lot you can do on the ship without ever swiping your KTTW card.

I totally see where you are coming from with this. Free food at Cabanas and the fast serve place, Pools, free entertainment, Great views, ocean breeze, Showers in the Spa area,, using the weight room. Even without being able to get off at port or buy anything, a Disney Cruise is pretty darn nice. And if you had a couple of accomplices, one to scan out your KTTW card (unlikely, I know) and another on the next sailing so that you can sleep there...

Ridiculous, of course, but like most things on this board, fun to dream about!

This has got to be the most original thread I've seen.

Actually, if it really did happen they could make it even harder. They would just make everyone show a keycard to eat at every restaurant and quick serve. So easy and most people wouldn't realize what was happening. So you have no clothes, no room and no food. That is not even counting the fact that every cast member would know what you look like since they take your picture when you check-in. The only way you could make it more than a few hours is to actually never leave your hiding spot. Because there is 1,000+ people looking for you. Though anyone who tried this wouldn't think that far ahead.

1000+ people looking for you and a terminal full of angry people who want to board but cannot because someone is being selfish and trying to get more than they paid for.

I am sure that the NSA's PRISM algorithms flagged me for a "watch list", like, 0.035 seconds after I put up my original post.

That's awesome! I didn't even consider that as a workaround for the sleeping and laundry issues. It wouldn't solve the clearing problem, but still.

Though anyone who tried this wouldn't think that far ahead.

Quite so. Rational people wouldn't be doing this.

Be honest, you're writing a book and this would further the plot, right? Main character is being chased by a stalker? Or is it a spy that's hiding out while collecting intel? Maybe a witness to a crime hiding and trying to escape the criminals? Or a couple of college people looking for a last adventure before settling down to the real world?

Would make a good plot scenario. You've come to the right place for advice. ;)

You got me. It is indeed research for a spy-caper spec script I am writing for ABC.

It may or may not involve fake mustaches, chloroform and a cast member found bound and gagged in a supply closet with their uniform missing.

This has me thinking as on one of my earlier cruises I didn't realize I needed my card to disembark upon our return. I knew I needed it for ports to get back on, but I was thinking like a hotel and just left it in the room. They did tell me to just go ahead so now I'm curious if I raised a red flag upon clearing the ship. Oops!

Hey! Somebody is raining on our hypothetical parade!

You are right. This idea is impractical, implausible, and selfish. But so is taking 10 cruises in a row and yet I still daydream about THAT. It's just a daydream. Just fleshing out the details for the fun of it.

I LOVE this idea. So funny. Certainly this scenario is no less plausible than a lot of the things I've seen in TV plots lately. And so, in that vein, let us continue:

So if someone managed to swipe your Keycard out (maybe with a diversion?) I guess the only way they would know you are still on-board is when you don't show up at customs. Any way around this? (In a TV/movie level of plausibility) They match the whole manifest against their sign out process. But you do the exit interview by family, not individually. If you were part of a decent-sized group...

We were at Canada place a few years ago, looking at their War of 1812 exhibit, and saw a disgruntled fellow who looked like he'd just been woken up being escorted firmly (with his luggage) from a ship. Embarkation had started, so that was off, but he didn't look like he'd embarked then gotten in trouble, but like he had been hiding and up to no good. It was interesting.

Could they use the longer-range RFID scanners to locate your KTTW card

Not sure the kttw card has long range rfid.

Theft is really all you could be charged with I guess. Maybe trespassing.

I don't think the RFID chip is long-range. The chips are all the same, but there are short-range scanners (like the glowing Mickey heads at WDW) and long-range scanners (how the CMs can tell you exactly where your kid is in the Oceaneer Club/Lab).

I remember when MagicBands first came out, there was disclaimer on the WDW site about how your MB or RFID-chipped ticket media could be "read" by a long range RFID scanner, but the info on the chip is just a reference number and thus useless without access to Disney's databases.

I wonder how many of those scanners are installed around the ships. My completely-uninformed guess is that they are not limited just to the kids clubs.

"Facts" like that will be great for your book!

Our hero is falsely accused of a crime that he did not commit. Ship security is closing in on his location using the scanners to track his KTTW card.

In a flash of ingenuity, our hero surreptitiously slips his card into the pocket of the snooty and egotistical head server.

In a hilarious case of mistaken identity, a much-deserved comeuppance ensues.

One time, I was on a Royal Caribbean ship with my grandfather, who became ill with a virus (later turned into pneumonia). He was quarantined, and we were told to wait at his room where he would be escorted off the ship. We waited...and waited....and waited. They began overhead paging us, whereby we would call guest services and they assured us someone was coming. This repeated over and over again for 30 minutes, until finally someone came. It was surreal being on the empty ship, but we felt like misfits for still being there and paged over and over again. Lots of looks from staff. But we were just doing what we were told!

There are stowaway laws, if you were to get away with it and get caught upon returning to the US you would likely be charged with that (max sentence of 5 years). The real problem is if you are caught outside of US territorial waters because then you would be entering another country illegally and subject to that country's laws and judicial process.

During the recent extended Disney Dream cruise, when they turned the ship into a hotel for one night, even though there had been numerous announcements that everyone had to disembark so the ship could be cleared before letting those who wanted to stay the night back on, there was a terminal full of people waiting an extra 1/2 hour or so due to several families not heeding the call (and likely sleeping or hiding in their stateroom), holding up everyone until they could be found.

I wonder how many of those scanners are installed around the ships. My completely-uninformed guess is that they are not limited just to the kids clubs.

The first time I went to pick up a child at the Oceaneer's Club, I was amazed they knew exactly in which room she was playing in... it was like magic.

Lost kids, lost seniors, missing crew members - all of those things make me wonder if there are long-range RFID scanners all over the ships.

The long range sensors would require a battery for the RFID to broadcast. That's why they say Magic Bands are only good for a few years (for the long range stuff). The KTTWC doesn't have a battery.
