FWGirl, Mickey the Wonder Beagle and I just returned from a long weekend at Hickory Run State Park in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. This was a first in many ways - the first camping trip in the new Outback, our first camping trip at Hickory Run, and our first camping trip in a PA state park.

For those who have never visited PA, it is a large state covered by low mountains and lots of forests. A playground for outdoors types. I have always been somewhat reluctant, however, to try state park camping. I've heard all kinds of bad reports - noisy, crowded, poor facilities, etc. For the shakedown cruise, however, I opted for a long weekend at a recommended park about an hour from our abode. I chose this weekend since it was before memorial day, and I figured most people would be going next weekend and avoid this one. I made reservations for 3 nights at a total cost of 87 bucks! Wow. The bad side - no water or sewer hookups. But since we were interested in testing the new trailer out, I wanted to use the holding tanks anyway.

Pennsylvania is trying to convert most of its government services to online, and the state park reservation system is no exception. I really think Disney could learn a few things about this. It's painless and quick. After inputing some info re. the size of trailer and needs, you are offered a map of campsites and a list of availble sites that meet your needs. In other words, you pick your site and print out your reservation with the actual site number assigned. Sweet. I needed a pet site with 30 amp service for a 30 foot trailer and got site 217.

The campground was great! Wooded, level sites, large sites...the only drawback was the age of the campground making sites somewhat tight to get into. I managed the Outback okay, but I saw some guys with larger units circling the place trying to find a site that would work for them. This is not a campground for the big boys, and I only saw 2 small Class A's the whole weekend. In fact, our 210rs was one of the larger trailers in the place. Most campers were popups or tenters, with a few hardsides and a couple hybrids, maybe 3 Class C's and a couple A's. I only saw one fiver - a small older one driven by a small old guy.

Here are some pictures:

The comfort station was pretty clean, with actual hot showers. I have spent a lot more for a campground with much worse facilities.

Campers were quiet, considerate. The pet owners were actually good about cleaning up after their pets! Amazing. PA has just started allowing pets in campgrounds over the last few years, so maybe word just hasn't gotten around yet, but I didn't see any leavings in the pet loop at all. You are allowed to take your dog anyplace except swimming areas as long as they are on a leash.

Bears are frequent visitors, but we didn't see any - much to my disappointment but FWGirl's joy. She walked around with a bear bell on most of the time.

Weather was good, food was good, read a lot, napped some, took the beagle on a lot of walks. Good trip overall. I would recommend this campground if you are interested in spending a little time in the Pocono region of PA.

Oh, here is a picture of me at the campground:

Hickory Run ?????? Jim shhhh. Please don't tell anybody about Mud Run and the 1st class fly fishing it has. A great walk back PA stream. Gotta put a bit of work in for access. Just can't jump outta the car and beat the water to a froth.

And just below the park where the old RR bridge goes over the Lehigh River. Some of my nicest PA brown trout releases were in this section. I have fallen in the Lehigh more than all of the PA streams combined that I have fly fished for 55 years.

Yes, I still love the big water. I am just a bit more cautious today.

Old age ? Hell no ! ! It's called maturity.

Just give me the Lehigh, Pine Creek, Upper Delaware, etc.---That's my element. There is soooooo much noise and turbulence in the big water, it is almost impossible to spook those denizens of the deep.

Great TR. Looks like a beautiful park. And IMO, you've never looked better.

Nice camper Jim,:thumbsup2 and from I can see of it , the area looks very inviting. Thats the nice thing about most state parks,,lots of woods and foilage.
Better luck next time on the bears,,but ya still might wanna keep that bell handy for the Mrs.

It would be nice to camp where woods are taken for granted. We are happy with just enough for some shade.

The Outback looks good Jim. Hope you enjoy it as much as the Kiwi.

Looks like a nice campground. I'm a real fan of State Parks. The reservation system is pretty neat to know your going to be this close to the bath house have a pull thru site and its big enough for your rig! All great information to have before you arrive! I do think disney could learn something from the State Campgrounds reservation sytem too!
Nice looking Outback Jim!

The campground looks so peaceful and lush!

One of the reasons we backed down from a 40' MH to a 32' MH is due to campground length restrictions. (Making preparations for when we can actually travel someday) A LOT of state, federal, and mom/pop campgrounds cannot accommodate anything longer than 36'. Unless you are going to live in your RV full-time (like we did for almost 2 years) two people do not need those gynormous buses. Actually - I could easily live full-time in my 32'. I have found through the years that less is more.

Next time you head to Florida - you might wish to go a little further south to Myakka State Park in Sarasota. Plenty to do, and a beautiful campground. Ya gotta watch all those thieving raccoons, though!

We love Hickory Run!

And can't wait to get back to Boulder Field now that my kiddos are big enough to go across it! (the youngest is now 8)

We also like Rickett's Glen for the waterfall hiking.

Looks like a nice place! Glad you had a good time and got the new Outback out for its first trip!

There's a sweatshirt of mine at the bottom of the lake there!!

:)

Jim-What is your max gross trailer loaded weight on the OUTBACK ???? It looks super.

dogcarbon----You mentioned the waterfalls in Ricketts Glen State Park.

Trying to get my wife to walk 'Where the waters meet' in Ricketts Glen before it gets too hot. Make a day of it with backback, lunch and something to drink. Would not recommend beer or kongaloosh. Pretty steep in lots of places.

If you live in PA you just gotta do this hike. It is a big V . You go up Rt 487 to the top of Redrock Mt.(Sullivan County). Park at Lake Jean. Start coming down the V to the bottom and then go back up the other side of the V, then walk the ridge connecting the top of the V. Approximately 15 plus waterfalls on each side of the V. If it' s hot take your bathing suits for a swim in Lake Jean. If it's really hot, take off your hiking shoes and stand under a waterfall or sit in one one of the pools. You might even see natural, not stocked Hemlock Brook Trout. Not very big, but really pretty.

I really like coming back up and crossing back and forth across the creek.

We like to take 4 to 6 hours to do 'Where the waters meet'. A camera is a must.

When was the last time you hilke the trails? They are still working on fixing what the floods of a few years ago did to all the trail improvements. Also they have not done to much to repair the right fork of th trail coming up towards Lake Jean from the waters meet. Ricketts Glen is in my backyard and the fire department I run with is one of the first due on the trail rescues? We average appx 8-10 rescues a year up there. Mostly caused by peop[le not wearing the proper foot wear and getting to close to the edge ont he wet rocks.

:)

Myself, wife, friends have done that hike 10 to 15 times, but not in the past 6/7 years(a guess). Sorry to hear the Trails have been injured.

I agree ; coming down when the trail is wet, you better have the right foot gear.

I know where Sweet Valley is. How about the young boy, Aaron Kelly, who was one of the top 5 on American Idol (Muncy Valley) this year.

One friend has a place off of 118 right below Redrock. Another friend has a place between Dushore and Forksville off Rt 87.

A close friend works for Lambert's Ford in Dushore. Have you ever been to the Pump & Pantry in Dushore ????

I agree!! I was born & raised in that area and it is gorgeous!!! It does have some of the best fishing and hiking around!

Jim,

After year of having the hybrid with the canvas bunk covers, did it feel strange to be sleeping in the extended metal slide-out? I guess I'm asking, did you miss the canvas?

I did at first, but it got pretty hot one day and the hard slide made keeping it cool much easier.
