HHI Trip Report...*MORE PHOTOS ADDED*

Great report so far...subscribing to see how HHI is as I am thinking of trying it soon.

I have been dying to know...has dh used his change jar yet? :rotfl:

Well, sort of....we've only stopped at three rest areas, but the vending machines at the hotel took a chunk out of it:rotfl:.

Am really enjoying your TR! Please keep us posted...

Sorry about the delay...

We arrived in HHI around 6pm yesterday, but had to make a grocery run which is NEVER fast with the kids. We thought about going to the resort first then heading back to the store, but I didn't think we'd want to leave once we settled in.

We checked in around 7:30pm. We were assigned a 1BR in building 12, which is connected to the main lodge. Our view...well...it isn't exactly breathtaking...

The room itself is great! Second (top) floor, huge balcony and no problems to report:thumbsup2.

Today, we did a dolphin tour in the morning which was FANTASTIC! We saw a family of three dolphins that really enjoyed hanging around our boat. Our guide, Scott(?) was awesome. DH and the kids had a blast...and me too.

(Sorry, no pictures of the dolphin tour....I was in charge of the video camera so I don't have any stills)

After that, we hit the beach house. We wandered out to the ocean. DH and DD5 went in while DD7 and I hung out on the sand. The wind was pretty strong and the sand was stinging our legs. We did see a dead jellyfish which was apparently the coolest thing the girls have ever seen:rotfl:.

We hit the pool at the beach house for a while. I enjoyed an adult beverage, DH got some rays and the girls swam in the pool. I was a little disappointed in the "service" at the bar. Although the CM was thoroughly pleasant and friendly, she did not know how to make the drink I ordered....which was the ADVERTISED DRINK OF THE DAY:confused3. I am not a big drinker so I am certainly no expert on mixed drinks (Captain and Coke is my favorite and that one is self-explanatory:lmao:), but I would expect the bartender to know how to make the drink that is advertised as the daily special.
*ETA*: She made up for it! She said "HI" to me and my family every day for the rest of the trip! She even called me her "favorite customer" and made the girls "special" smoothies...she charged me for one but split it into two HUGE cups!
Now, we're back at the room, getting the girls cleaned up for Kids Nite Out.

Tomorrow is supposed to be cool with thunderstorms so we don't have any big plans. The kids want to make slime at the community hall so we may venture out for that.

Until later...

Thunderstorms came in last night and this morning. Woke up to rain, wind and COLD temperatures.

The girls wanted to meet Shadow....BAD! I told them that she is a rare treat. There are other guests who have been here many times and have never seen her so I didn't want them to get their hopes up. We got bundled up to head down to the shuffleboard court and this is what was waiting for us...

931_0333.jpg

My goodness, were they excited! They also found out that Shadow will be leading a bunny hunt tomorrow before their kayak trip so that brightened up this gloomy day:goodvibes.

After they met Shadow, they did the other activity they'd been looking forward to for a long time....SLIME MAKING!

We're having a little lunch now and watching "Up", waiting for the sun to come out a little more. It is fairly windy which makes it feel a lot cooler. We haven't even unloaded the bikes from our truck yet and it is still a little cold to go for a ride. We're going to try to get them off and go to the beach house this afternoon if the sun comes out.

We're thinking about doing the Low Country Boil for dinner, but the menu isn't exactly our list of favorites and I don't know how much the girls would be entertained. They would probably just keep begging to leave and go swimming. I think we are going to skip it for this trip:sad1:.

So far, the trip had been very relaxing. We've met a lot of people...mostly from Michigan:lmao:. I thought us Michiganders all went to Orlando for Spring Break:rotfl2:!?

Kristen, you're making me so excited for our trip in 2 weeks, 3 days, and 4 hours (but who's counting?). The view from your 1 BR looks like a 1 BR we had in building 12 once. Loving your trip report. Keep it coming! Don't forget to tell us where you eat. Isn't Shadow a sweet girl?

so happy to see your report! we will be taking the same path the first week of may, through gatlinburg to hilton head for our first dvc stay! looking forward to more posts!

Thanks for posting such a great report.

We are checking in on Saturday - really excited but getting stressed (as usual) about all the 'stuff' that needs to be done before we leave on Friday, which will be a looooonnnngggg day.

eight hour flight to new york, 4 hour wait then 2.5 hour flight to savannah. Spending 1st night at the Embassy Suites at Savannah airport to recover ready for the holiday to start properly on Saturday.

This afternoon, we rented a tug-along for DD5. I was a little disappointed because we brought our own bikes (forgot DD's training wheels:headache:) but in order to rent the tug-along, we had to rent an adult bike too. So, instead of $30, we had to pay the full $60. Oh well...

The bike ride this afternoon was fantastic! We rode to the beach house and then along the beach. The kids were so excited to see dead horseshoe crabs and a few dead jellyfish. They didn't find anything alive, but they found a lot of seashells. Around 5:30, we headed back to the room for some dinner. I made pot roast, mashed potatoes, corn and crescent rolls, with fresh-baked white chocolate macadamia nut cookies for dessert.

The girls are watching "Tarzan II" (they watched "Tarzan" last night) and coloring in their new coloring books, DH is doing a little laundry and I am watching DWTS from last night. After the movie, I think the kids want to go down to the pool, but it sure is cold out!

Tomorrow, it is a bunny hunt with Shadow at 10am and a kayak tour at 11:30. It is supposed to warm up tomorrow so we will probably bike back to the beach tomorrow afternoon.

As far as where we've eaten, DH and I ate at Kingfisher last night while the kids were at Kids Nite Out. DH had a 20oz Porterhouse and I had a roasted chicken breast with basil pesto sauce. For dessert, we split a piece of peanut butter pie. The food was delicious, the service only so-so, but sitting down to a quiet meal without interruptions....priceless:yay:! We're not planning on eating out too much this trip. We still have pizza, spaghetti and hot dogs to use up. We are thoroughly enjoying eating our meals in the room, and we are saving a lot of money doing it too! We only bought 2 refillable mugs because they are the same ones we got last April at WDW. DH and I are using them and the kids are drinking Kool-Aid and water.

That's all for now....Thanks for reading!

Fabulous pictures and great report! Can't wait to hear about the kayaking trip! That's what I'm looking forward to most when we go!

Meeting Shadow and making slime. . . Maybe the world is perfect after all. Thanks for sharing your photos and trip report!

I am enjoying your trip report! Its always great to see someone who can vacation on a budget. I try to gleam any and all tips that I can for future budget vacations of my own!

Sounds like you are having a wonderful family vacation. My DH and I got real lucky while visiting HHI for the day and we got to meet Shadow.

It sounds like a very nice vacation! I've enjoyed your report and your pictures.

:goodvibes

I'm enjoying your TR. It's nice to know that my nieces and nephews are not the only ones that like dead things, slime and Shadow, what a vacation!

Enjoying your report! We love, love, LOVE HHI. In fact, I would love to LIVE there-it's just so beautiful.

Enjoy!

Yesterday was BEEE-YOOOOOOOO-TIFUL!!!

We started the morning with a kayak trip. Originally, the girls wanted to do the bunny hunt with Shadow, but they just couldn't peel themselves away from the PBS show that was on TV so they didn't get there in time. That was fine because we saw the "hunters" following B'Lou and Shadow...about 50 people! We talked to B'Lou later and he said that the group started with about 15 and just kept growing:lmao:.

Back to the kayak trip...

DD5, who is usually glued to DH for everything, actually wanted to ride in the kayak with me this time. DD7 agreed to ride with DH without any fuss. (She is usually the "mommy's girl":cutie:). Our guide showed a look of concern when we told him our plan. He said that DD5 probably wouldn't be able to paddle at all because the little paddle he gave her doesn't move much water and it is more of a novelty. He was concerned that I wouldn't be able to manage the double kayak on my own. He suggested that DD7 ride with me so that she could help, and then DH could paddle DD5 in the double kayak by himself. I told him that we would have a massive meltdown if we tried to switch the kids now. Even though I had never kayaked before, I was now determined to show our guide that I am stronger than I look;).

Our tour lasted just under 2 hours. We went out on Broad Creek and learned a lot about the area's economy and ecology. It was definitely a workout paddling against the wind and the tide, but I kept up without a problem:cheer2:. As we unloaded from the kayaks and returned our life jackets, our guide came up to DH and said, "That is one strong wife you have there! She handled that kayak magnificently!" Then he told me, "I was shocked! I've never seen a first-timer paddle a double-kayak by themself the way you did. Nice work!" (He got a nice tip after that:thumbsup2)

After the kayak trip, we packed up the bikes and headed down to the beach house. It was sunny and felt like about 75 degrees, but there was only about a dozen people at the pool:confused3.
933_0339.jpg

We didn't mind....I had a couple "adult" beverages again and the girls went swimming. We stayed at the pool for about an hour and then we took the bikes down to the beach. The girls wanted to check every tide pool. They'd already found dead crabs, jellyfish and sand dollars. They were determined to find a starfish! We had to stop at every single puddle of water, big or small, to look for a starfish...

933_0351.jpg

....Finally...

933_0345.jpg

JACKPOT!! Not one, but TWO starfish...in the same tide pool! :cheer2::cool1::banana:

We rode up and down the beach until about 6pm. Then it was time to head back for dinner. We still have a lot of groceries to eat up so the girls had hot dogs and DH and I had a homemade pizza. We've heard great things about a lot of restaurants here, but for some reason, we have had no inclination to eat out. That is very odd for us because that is usually all we do at home...eat out. Maybe that is why we are enjoying the meals in our room so much...it is different than our normal routine. The kids have not once asked to go to a restaurant so I think they are perfectly content with my "cooking" as well:cool2:.

After dinner, we went to our first HHI campfire. What a hoot! At first, the girls weren't too interested. When they divided us into teams for the dance competition, our team had to come up with a name. DD7 was elated when they chose her suggestion ("Team Hercules") for our team. After that, they went crazy! DH sat at the picnic table, chatting with his new friend about hunting and guns and whatever else guys talk about:hyper2:. We ate our S'Mores (free, by the way....I didn't realize any food at Disney was free...nice surprise:goodvibes) and headed back to the room. I was exhausted so I hit the hay while DH and the girls spent some time at the table coloring and reading. I have no idea when they went to bed because the next thing I knew, I woke up at 7:15 this morning!

On the agenda for today is the Longview Arts and Crafts at 10am. When DH found out they were making shark tooth necklaces, he was excited. He actually said, "I have to do that!". That's the first thing this trip that he has CHOSEN to participate in. The Un-Birthday party is at 2pm which is the other thing the girls have been wanting to do since we started planning this trip. At some point today, I have to begin the sad process of final laundry and packing the suitcases:sad1:. The original plan was to take our time tomorrow and try to be on the road by 11am. I'd planned on driving to a hotel in Pigeon Forge, TN (already have the reservation), but now, DH thinks we need to make it further down the road. I told him that the hotel I selected is about 6 hours of drive time (about 7.5 hours actual time) which would leave us with about 10 hours of drive time on Saturday to get home. He tells me now that he'd rather split the time more 50/50. So, I need to get online and try to find us another hotel closer to home. I don't want to have to get up too early tomorrow, but I also do not want to be driving through the mountains of TN at midnight! Guess who will be doing the driving tomorrow:rolleyes1....

That's all for now. It's 8am and I need to get our last day here underway.

Thanks for reading!

Glad you are all having a fun trip ! The smiles on your DDs faces while they are holding starfish is priceless :thumbsup2 Our family's first trip to HHI was in 2000 & in the many times we've gone since then not once have our kids ever said that they wish we'd gone to WDW instead (and they really  WDW) HHI really is an awesome place in so many ways.

Enjoy & hope to read more of your TR :goodvibes

What a great day to finish off our vacation. We started with meeting the naturalist and making shark-tooth necklaces. Then, we spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon at the pool. DH and I got a bit sunburned, despite a good coating of SPF 50!

The girls went to the Un-Birthday party at 2pm. At about 3:30pm, we headed over to the beach house for some more fun on the beach. We rode the bikes and checked the tide pools again, but we didn't find anything new. The wind had died down and the temperatures came up...and you couldn't find a cloud anywhere:beach:.

Around 5:30pm, we headed back to the room and got cleaned up a bit. At 7:30, we took a bike ride with another family that we met here and went over to Shelter Cove for some ice cream. The sun went down and we headed back to the villa to pack...or so I thought.

I didn't realize that they were playing Goofy Bingo in the community hall at 7:30 AND 8:30. The girls and I (along with DD's new friend and her mother) raced down to the community hall and squeaked into the game at the last minute. The girls had a blast! DD5 hit Bingo once but DD7 came up empty, but they gave candy to everyone anyways:dance3:.

The girls are now sacked out and DH and I are frantically trying to get everything packed. The final load of laundry is going right now, the dishes are washed and the suitcases are almost packed, with the exception of the clothes in the washing machine.

Tomorrow, I have no idea when we will actually be leaving. We're trying a new route to return home. We're stopping tomorrow night in Charleston, WV and staying at a Residence Inn. It looks like about an 8.5 hour drive time so I'm hoping to be on the road no later than 10am. We'll see how that pans out.

DH was very pleased with his vacation. I'm relieved because I am the one that talked him into buying an add-on here, even though we'd never visited the area. We're very happy with our new "home" and it will be a long two years before we are able to return.

Thanks for reading! Since we are leaving tomorrow, I do not plan on updating any further, unless something noteworthy comes up or if anyone has any questions.

Thanks for reading!:surfweb:

I'm so glad you posted the pictures and the report. It was fun to read! Glad you had such a great time!
