On our January visit to HHI we learned that Captain's Seafood had closed. Tonight I was checking out the Island Packet on the web and found the following information about other resturants.

Cracker Barrel is the latest island restaurant to close.

Hofbrauhaus on Pope Avenue and Fitzgerald's on South Forest Beach Drive, both south-island mainstays for the past 30 years, closed just after Thanksgiving last year. Fratello's off William Hilton Parkway also closed last year.

We were just at HH and cracker barrel was packed. I doubt it is closing if for no other reason because of its breakfast. Hofbrauh house did close and did Edible Pursuits which had a great Sunday brunch. We recently tried a place called Pearlz off in Bluffton which was great.

Wow, you just named 3 of our usual resturaunts. On our last trip, like every other trip, we went to Cracker Barrel, Hofsbrauhaus (German DH never missed a trip there-wait til I tell him!), and Captain's Seafood. Maybe we're dooming resturaunts-any news on Hudson's or Cafe Europa? I hope we didn't doom those too! Thanks for the info.

I was there about 3 weeks ago. Cafe Europa was closed (their usual seasonal close), but the sign said the date they would reopen, which was just about a week away. They should be open now. Ate at Cracker Barrel - it's surprising if that's closed!

I spent President's Day Weekend at Marriott's Grande Ocean at Hilton Head. In the paper was an announcement that Captain's Seafood is reopening this Monday. They had to close suddenly because the owner of the building went up drastically on the lease. They are now located across from Hinchey's at Coligny Circle across from Coligny Plaza. We were so excited to hear they are reopening. Monday I stopped by, and they did have a menu posted on the window. Prices seemed about the same as last year. When I called, they did tell me that they would no longer have the seafood market. Lunch and dinner only.

That's too bad about the seafood market. I remember when they were primarily a wholesale seafood seller first and foremost (they supplied most of the island restaurants) and we would go there to buy fresh shrimp. Then one day they had a couple of tables and plastic chairs off to the side and served a huge, cheap fresh fish lunch. Then the building burned down (originally they were located on Matthews Dr.), they re-opened in a new location, and later changed hands. Over the years they became almost too popular--no longer could you dash in and get a quick meal to go at dinner time; people were there lined up waiting and dressed up (gasp!) for dinner. But they are an island icon; glad to hear they are re-opening. I guess that Sea Shack is the newer version of the old Captain's Seafood. ;)

I haven't eaten there, but a local told me that's a good place. Doesn't look like much from the outside.

I ate at Harold's a long time ago when I lived on the island (it's my husband's hometown.) My husband was a golf pro and would go there for lunch all the time. Great pork chops, okra, and mac and cheese! I don't think I'd want any of the nutritional info, though.
