3 more days until vacation:cool1: We are flying into Charleston S.C. and was wondering if any one has used the directions that are given on the DVC site. Is there a faster way?? Thanks!

I drive Chas to HH a couple times a week during the summer months. Which way does the website tell you to go, taking the 95 or through Beaufort? There are pros and cons to both, plus at least one small short cut through Beaufort that may or may not be listed. What day of the week are you actually going? What time of day?

The website route takes you along the back roads from Charleston to Hilton Head. This is my preferred way of going. You really get a feel for the Low Country. :drive: The scenery is gorgeous. Just be careful, because the roads are only two lanes in some places and can be dangerous. :scared1:

The other way (here's the Mapquest link: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/chs:charleston+sc/22+Harbourside+Dr+hilton+head+island+sc/) will take you via the Interstate. The problem with the Interstate is that you have to go further west to get on I-95, then go back east to get to the resort. It's further mileage-wise, but takes about the same amount of time as the back roads route because you have higher speed limits. Also, depending on the time of day you may run into some traffic on 278; you're on 278 for a longer period of time if you take the Interstate. :headache:

Thanks for your replies! We should be on the road at 1:00 pm on Saturday....as long as our flights are on time:confused: Now that you know the specifics, which way is best?

Well, Saturdays are usually pretty busy during the high season because that's the day that all the rentals turn over. But at this time of the year, it shouldn't be too bad.

You will probably run into a little traffic on 278, but you will do that either way you want to go. I guess your choice depends on if you prefer the Interstate or the scenic route!

Hmmm, 50-50, either way the time will be the same. I did the drive this past Sat. but went the freeway route because the air show was going on in Beaufort; according to a newspaper article read after the fact this was a very good decision! But in general, Saturdays this time of year are pretty reasonable as far as traffic goes. Since it will be daylight, I'd second what Disneyaholic said and go through Beaufort for the scenic drive. Be aware that there is a 22 mile stretch that is one lane roads with 3 passing areas. The little shortcut you can take is after you pass the airplanes in Beaufort: turn right on the 802.

I-526 (west?) until it dead ends
right on 17 south
21 south toward Beaufort
right on 802
right on 170 (note: do not speed too much after this point!!!)
ramp to 278 toward Hilton Head
