DW and I will be headed to WDW in February and are staying overnight at HHI on the way down. We are looking for something different (no chains) and casual. Leaning towards probably Italian (really good pizza even) or Low Country.

Any suggestions? Has anyone eaten at Gullah Grub?

It's been 10 years since we've been there, but we really enjoyed The Santa Fe Cafe. Their signature soup was fantastic. When you check in, they should give you a list of nearby restaurants. The CM who checked us in was nice enough to go over the list and point out some of his favorites.

Check out the HHI Lovers thread over on Mousellaneous. There are oodles of dining suggestions. Dye's and Roastfish & Cornbread are two of the latest favorites. We are planning on Guisseppe's one night when we are there this weekend. It's very close and reasonable. We haven't tried it yet, but lots of DVCer's on the adoration thread like it. I have seen no mention of Gullah Grub, good or bad. Checking with the desk is a good idea as many places shut down or have limited hours in the off season.

Our favorite restaurant in HH is Truffles. We have eaten there on our last two trips and it is by far one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. The atmosphere is casual, the menu is fantastic..they probably have it online for you to view. I don't remember any pizza or flatbreads, but my son loved the pasta and we had crabcakes & the salmon. All fantastic. Have a great time!:)

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions. I am getting so hungry just thinking about all of the possibilities! :goodvibes

Gullah Grub is not located on Hilton Head Island, I was sure I didn't recall it being located there but St. Helena Island, I checked & it is on St. Helena ( which is about 50 miles drive north of HHI ). With the abundance of restaurants on HHI I wouldn't make the drive to St. Helena's. Roastfish & Cornbread and Dye's Gullah Fixin's are consistently getting good reviews for low country cooking. We had hoped to try one or both on our most recent trip 8/15-17 but didn't get to do so; the best I can recommend from this trip is One Hot Mama's - enjoyed food (ribs, wings, pulled pork, southern style brisket), priced right, serves later in evening which is often a big plus with us as our kids are older & usually their dinner appetite doesn't kick in until later in evening.

DH & I loved  Pink Flamingo Donut's muffins for breakfast & with coffee!! First trip we got to try PFD's & glad we did, sooooo good :thumbsup2

When we go next april, we plan on eating at "Robert Irvines Eat". I believe it's within a mile of the resort. You can find the menu online if you google it. In case you didn't know, Robert Irvine is a celebrity chef, He is the star of "Dinner Impossible" on the food network.

i just got back from HHI and here's another plug for roastfish & cornbread. you might hear some recommendations for the sea shack but i'd skip it - i was underwhelmed and then went to R&C and then i realized what the food was supposed to taste like. i wound up going back twice to R&C.

(chef david at R&C used to cook at the sea shack when it was highlighted on the food network - he started the new place last november, IIRC. R&C is not even in the restaurant guide yet.)

i also liked the food at frankie bones (i tried the lobster mac and cheese) and the skull creek boathouse. the sushi at hinoki of kurama and the thai at ruan thai were also really good. (edited to add: both of the ethnic places might be a little more formal at night...not sure.)

getting around hilton head is an adventure (especially at night) due to limited signage and lighting restrictions, so leave a little extra time for finding places...
