DW and I will be headed to WDW in February and are staying overnight at HHI on the way down. We are looking for something different (no chains) and casual. Leaning towards probably Italian (really good pizza even) or Low Country.

Any suggestions? Has anyone eaten at Gullah Grub?

I don't think Gullah Grub has a location on HHI; unless I am confusing it

with another restaurant I think Gullah Grub is located north of HHI on

St. Helena's Island.

For low country style cooking we had hoped to try Roastfish & Cornbread or
Dye's Gullah Fixin's on our trip Aug 15-17 but
we didn't get chance, since we were traveling with family it was easier
for us to go to restaurants closer to Disney resort ( Parrot Cove DBro & family
were underwhelmed by, San Miguel's was 50 - 50 liked/disliked among
both our family groups - maybe it was just an off night at SM's

For Italian within walking distance of Disney resort is Little Venice, have not tried it but I read good things recently.

Our best meal was off Sea Pines Circle at One Hot Mama's; casual ( ribs, wings, burgers, meatloaf, etc.) good stuff well prepared & priced right.

Dye's is fabulous! www.dyesgullahfixins.com

We like both the buffet as well as ordering off the menu. The website lists which days are which.

She does ask that you make a reservation as she only cooks what she will need for the day, and everything is made fresh daily. People have reported that making reservations has been difficult, but know that if you call and make a reservation she DOES get your call. She is a one woman operation.....cooking, running the business, serving and answering the phone or checking messages.

The food is true low country cuisine with some of the best fried chicken I have ever had. The cornbread comes with home made cane sugar syrup. She makes her sweet tea with the same cane sugar.

The crab cakes are as big as your palm and all crab, no filler. The stewed pork chops were melt in your mouth delicious with the flavor of the veggies they are cooked with running through the meat.

The desserts are also made fresh and often served warm. We had a sweet potato pound cake one day that was hot from the oven when it was served. On another occasion we had the peach "dump" which is like a cobbler, also served warm. SOOO good.

Dye loves to talk about the Gullah culture and is very proud of her heritage. Get her talking and she will tell you all sorts of stories about her family and growing up as one of 10 kids on a farm. She learned to cook from her mother and grandmother and does not use recipes. She once told us that she learned how to make fried chicken as a result of a "beating". Her daddy liked his chicken piping hot and put on the table just as he finished washing his hands. She stated that it wasn't fun...so she learned to do it right....and right she does it.

Try it!

We walked over to the Italian restaurant (don't remember the name, but the CM's at the desk can help) at the marina across the bridge. It was really good. That was 2 years ago.

We were just there from the 14th-21st. Had fairly good pizza & mediocre alfredo at Guiseppi's. We also had just a so-so meal at San Miguels (read: would not recommend). One Hot Mama's was good (and cheap) if you like pulled pork / wings etc. We also had a good meal at Roastfish & Cornbread which is Low Country style food - quite reasonably priced too. Our BEST meals all week were at Truffles Cafe & Alligator Grille... You can get coupons for Alligator Grille at restaurants.com. While they were our 2 best meals I think we'd give the edge to Truffles Cafe for value...bigger portions & similar atmosphere tho both are what I would call dressy casual. We called ahead for ressies at both of those so it was nice not to have a wait.

(OH and we TRIED to get ressies for Dye's for the Friday night buffet. I couldn't seem to call & CATCH anybody to actually answer the phone. The recorded message said to leave a message with a LOCAL phone number - which I DID - THREE TIMES with a detailed message that we wanted the Friday evening buffet etc... Nobody ever called us back so I said I didn't need to eat there THAT bad!!)

On our recent vacation we ate at Salty Dog, Wreck of the Salty Dog, Roastfish & Cornbread, The Studio, Alligator Grille, Dye's Gullah Fixins, Old Fort Pub, Black Marlin & The Parrot whatever for lunch when we were leaving. Don't go to the Parrot whatever. For reasonably priced, delicious food, we loved R&C, Dye's & Black Marlin. The studio & Alligator were delicious, but much more expensive, even with the coupons we had. But I would go back to either. Old Fort Pub was also pricey, they overcooked my steak (the only steak I had all week- I usually eat fish and needed a break- they did make me a new one that was delicious), but the view was unbeatable- even with rain and no sunset. :) I would pick Dye's, Roastfish or Black Marlin. We would have gone back to Roastfish on our last night, but they are closed on Mondays- but then we had a nice meal at Black Marlin that night, so it all worked out. :goodvibes Dye's is real lowcountry, Gullah food- we ate the buffet, and I really couldn't tell you which thing was my favorite, it was all so good. Ok, maybe the sweet potato cornbread. And that onion pie. YUMMMMMMM!; R&C was a lighter twist on lowcountry seafood (although my hubby had stew there that was not fish, and it was fantastic). Black Marlin was more of a regular seafood place (the tuna nachos were AWESOME!). Too hard to choose. You need to stay longer! :rotfl:

Thanks for the suggestions!

You are correct...Gullah Grub is on Saint Helena Island. Not knowing the area I didn't realize that it was not so close.

I agree! Staying longer would be great. Of course staying on vacation longer is my life goal. We are new DVC owners from NC so the HHI stay is kind of a "will the kids (DD19, DS10) enjoy it" scouting trip. The lower points and closer proximity to home will make HHI a great vacation spot. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the great suggestion!

I have to put Dye's on our list. Their menu looks great!

I can't even begin to say how envious I am that you are so close to HHI.....I hope you love it as much as we do!:lovestruc

Well, we are closer to HHI than we are to WDW but we are still 5.5 to 6 hours away from HHI. But much closer than it is from NJ. I am sure we will fall in love with it too! :cloud9:

I would suggest:

Smoke House
Mi Tierra Grill
Truffles
Capt Woody's
Boat House
Fiesta Fresh

popcorn::Great thread! We leave for HHI in 3 days - looking forward to trying some of these places out!
