I guess my question really is how is the water?
Is it too chilly to swim?

HHead is usually still warm at Thanksgiving; in fact, it's a very popular place to be for that 4-day weekend. Plus, the pool at the resort is heated. I can't speak to VB.

I don't know about VB, but we've spent the last 3 Thanksgivings at HHI. In 2006, it was in the low 30's, around freezing, on Thanksgiving morning. The following years were a little better. Last year, although the weather warmed up into the 60s, DH had 2 mornings when his golf was delayed because of frost.

Here's a picture of the pool from 2006-yes that's steam rising because it's heated-

In 2008 there were a few people at the pool, but it was still too cold for us.

Yes....HHI at Thanksgiving would be cold (though my Nephew went swimming several times but he is nuts).

We had a blast two years ago. Make sure you get in your order for a Fried Turkey. They are wondermus! Call the desk and they can tell you more, but, you have to get your order in about a month ahead. So call NOW!

I think your biggest problem may be getting a reservation that week. Bothe resorts are popular that week.

Vero Beach would be much warmer and the pool should be good for swimming. The ocean may be a bit too cold.

I really like the "feel" of Thanksgiving at Hilton Head. Its so cozy with all of the trees and woods. I can't quite put my finger on it.

Just as VWL screams Christmas...Hilton Head screams Thanksgiving. I don't know why. Its kind of neat to visit Savannah during the holidays as well.

However, good luck getting a reservation!

We had to settle for coming in on the Friday after Thanksgiving!

I also love using the DVC cash rate at Hilton Head.

Finally, shhhhh! don't tell anybody. Hilton Head is Disney's best kept secret!

BTW, we tried HHI over the MLK Jr. holiday last year. This Southern girl doesn't have fun anywhere when its 13 degrees outside, even if it is Hilton Head!

The winter weather in This area of the country has always baffled me. It's almost exactly the same longitude as Southern California, (where we live) and yet the winter weather is so much colder. Our warm winters must have alot to do with the Pacific Ocean.

The weather reports said that it was the coldest it had been in 20 years!!

It gets that cold in Alabama too, but on very rare occasssions!

It's funny that you said that-I always felt the same way about HHI at Thanksgiving too. We have to fly, and the airfares are atrocious around Thanksgiving. This year we even discussed (briefly) not going to HHI because of the very high air fares. But Signe's cranberry sauce makes it worth the trip!
In October, DH is taking a trip to Alabama, and one thing he'll be doing is investigating moving there (among his many golf tee times!). That way we could continue going to HHI every Thanksgiving for Signe's cranberry sauce and pies, without paying the very high air prices.

Come on!

I grew up in North Alabama, and have lived in Central Alabama for 17 years. Let me know if you have any questions.
