When, Where and What's Happening in January 2015 in The Lowcountry​

January1-February 8: The Coastal Discovery Museum will open a new exhibit in the Hilton Head Regional Healthcare Temporary Exhibit Gallery with a theme of close up views of animals and plants in the Lowcountry. The combination of location and weather make the Lowcountry a place with great diversity in flora and fauna. This exhibit will show the beauty of many small details in nature all around us. The exhibit encompasses either small animals and plants or parts of them that cannot fully be appreciated by the naked eye. Most of the photos featured in the exhibit were taken with the aid of a macro lens, others were taken as close up views with regular lens. The Museum would like to express its appreciation to the Camera Club of Hilton Head Island for their kind cooperation in assisting with this exhibit. January 2 – February 28 : Art League of Hilton Head Student Exhibition! This judged event can be viewed by appointment or when classes are in session. For more information, call (843) 842-5753 or artleaguehhi.com.

January 1-January 4: The Dove Street Festival of Lights at Shelter Cove Towne Centre! The Dove Street Festival of Lights, an Island holiday tradition for 20 years, is coming back to life at Shelter Cove Towne Centre! With the blessing of founders Paul & Kristi Beckler and Rob Lolik, visitors from across the region will once again be able to experience the magic of the cascading and tastefully tacky display. Presented by Shelter Cove Towne Centre, the Dove Street Festival of Lights will be open to the public nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors will be able to gain entrance to the Dove Street Festival of Lights via both the Kroger and Belk sides of the Towne Centre. The Deep Well Project, the holiday festival’s longstanding beneficiary, will be joined this year by PEP (Programs for Exceptional People) accepting donations onsite. sheltercovetownecentre.com.

Tuesday & Thursday : May River History and Science Expedition at The Coastal Discovery Museum! This 2 hour Bluffton cruise will allow you to discover the small town, its historical relevance and ecological importance to the area. Your guide is a local marine biologist and 4th generation Bluffton resident, Capt. Amber Kuehn. This tour is a lecture on the water amidst environmental beauty and in historic May River which was the site of the Bluffton Expedition during the Civil War. You can expect to be entertained and enlightened on your journey through timeless marshland. $35 for adult, $25 for children (12 and under) and reservations are required by calling (843) 689-6767 ext. 223 or coastaldiscovery.

January 7-February 6 : The Camera Club of Hilton Head Island will exhibit 30 framed images of the Lowcountry at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway. The 135-member club includes many of the island’s best photographers. The photos will showcase their best artistic expressions of landscapes and wildlife, as well as the built environment of the Lowcountry. The exhibit is sponsored by the Visual Arts Committee of the church and is free and open Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. – noon. January 7 : Bald Eagles of the Lowcountry! The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn will present a program on Bald Eagles in South Carolina at 3 p.m. Tom Murphy, a retired biologist from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and principal investigator for the Bald Eagle Program for 33 years, will share his knowledge of the natural history of Bald Eagles in the Lowcountry. Once nearly extinct in the state, this presentation will cover the successes and difficulties in recovering and maintaining Bald Eagles in South Carolina. Different factors contributed to the decimation of the national bird; however, these spectacular predators were taken off the Endangered Species list in 2007, and are now a common sight in the Lowcountry. January 12 : Great Performances Series at the Arts Center, presents Mary Wilson! Movie star, jazz singer and civil rights pioneer Lena Horne is memorialized by musical icon Mary Wilson, of Supremes fame, in this theatrical tribute. Classic Horne songs include “Stormy Weather,” “A Lady Must Live,” and “It’s All Right with Me.” 8 p.m. $80 ticket price. Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, 14 Shelter Cove Lane. January 15 : The Palmetto Quilt Guild’s monthly meeting takes place at Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort, 40 Folly Field Rd. 1 p.m. Guest speaker, Sue Nickels, an international award-winner, teacher and lecturer. Thursdays : Nature Photography at the Coastal Discovery Museum, from 2-3:30 p.m., professional photographer Scott Moody teach the ‘tricks of the trade’ of nature photography. After a brief introduction indoors, participants will explore the scenic and historic Honey Horn grounds to learn about lighting, subject matter, and composition. 70 Honey Horn Dr. The class is appropriate for those 12 and older and space is limited. January 16 : Great Performances Series at the Arts Center, presents Martha Graham Dance Co.! Expect a night of magnificent dance from one of the country’s most influential and inspirational dance companies, showcasing masterpieces by Graham, her peers and their successors, as well as newly commissioned contemporary works. 8 p.m. $76 ticket price. January 24 : Snow Day at Shelter Cove Community Park, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. A large snow field and bounce houses. Concessions sold separately. Proceeds benefit the Island Rec. January 31 : Miss Hilton Head Island Organization officials announced the search is on for the next Miss Hilton Head Island and Miss Hilton Head Island Teen! The Pageant Competition will be held at 7 p.m., Hilton Head Island High School’s Seahawk Cultural Center, 70 Wilborn Rd. The Miss Hilton Head Island Scholarship Pageant is in its third year back return after a 15 year absence from the island and the Miss SC Competition. Aw, gee! A couple of those look really interesting to us-like the one on the Bald Eagles, and the Nature Photography class. And we've never experienced restaurant week. We've always gone in November only-maybe we need to plan a January trip also.
