September 4, 11, 18 & 25: Outside is pleased to announce the return of our Fast! Fun! Free! PaddleboardRace Series. The Series take place from 5-7 p.m. at the Outside Outpost in Shelter Cove Marina. The family friendly events are open to all age and skill levels and no experience is necessary. Points will be cumulative based on participation and placement at each of the 4 race days. September 5 -October 1: Experience the exhibit that brings historic Mitchelville to life, currently on loan from the McKissick Museum at USC in Columbia, SC right here on Hilton Head Island. There will be images, stories, and artifacts from the Town of Mitchelville. The exhibit will be on display at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. every day! September 6: Saturdays: The Coastal Discovery Museum presents a Shrimp Trawling Experience for the fall months. Times vary for these cruises. This interactive cruise will take you from Hudsons Dock out into Port Royal Sound where youll have a chance to see how a shrimp trawler works and find out about all the critters that can be found in its nets. September 7: Audition: Singin in the Rain! 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The production will be directed by Casey Colgan, well known to the Arts Center for directing Hairspray, 42nd Street, Aida and many others. Rehearsals begin on November 11, and performances run from December 5-28, 2014. Actors must be available for all rehearsals and performances. Auditions are by appointment only. Actors must be able to have great acting, vocal and dance/movement abilities. Ensemble actors will understudy lead roles. Please prepare 32 bars of a song either from the show or in the style of the show. Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together. Accompanist provided. Dance Callbacks are after the call. September 9: Tuesdays: The Shelter Cove Farmers Market will be held every Tuesday, from April 29th until October 28th from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. During the summer months (June 17th-August 12th) the market will have extended hours from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. and will close with the fireworks display. The Shelter Cove Farmers Market features vendors selling local farm-fresh produce, art work, sweets, baked goods and other specialty foods, as well as prepared food vendors for those looking to grab a snack or dinner. September 13: The Island Recreation Association introduces the Tailgate Festival from 1-7 p.m. at Shelter Cove Community Park. Tailgate Festival to benefit the Associations Childrens Scholarship Fund to ensure that no child is denied recreational activities.
The football themed festival will kick-off the weekend, especially since South Carolina plays Georgia at 3:30 pm! Celebrate your favorite team and favorite tailgate foods. Local restaurants will break out their best game day dips, wings, pots of chili and grilled recipes for the first ever Tailgate Festival. The end zone will feature large screens airing that days football games. It will be a day of football, kid-friendly events, corn hole tournament and restaurant rivalry. September 17: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host David Harter at 3 p.m. for this program about our local seafood. Harter, president of the Hilton Head Island Sportfishing Club and tour guide for SCDNRs Waddell Mariculture Center will give advice about what are the best seafoods to order for your palette, health and your wallet when dining in our local restaurants and buying at our seafood distributors. September 20: Take part in the largest one-day volunteer cleanup event of its kind in South Carolina as a volunteer with The Sea Pines Resorts Lifes a Clean Beach team, 9 a.m.12 p.m. Conducted annually since 1988, The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy. The Ocean Conservancy uses debris data gathered during the event to help identify sources of litter so we can stop pollution before it starts. We have five miles of the most beautiful beaches along the coast; help us keep them that way! Please contact The Sea Pines Resort Recreation Department at (843) 842-1979 to volunteer.
September 21: Harbour Town Fall Fest, 11 a.m.6 p.m. With summer behind us, come enjoy the splendor of Harbour Town with this family-friendly event that will include: a sidewalk sale with Harbour Town shops offering great deals and fabulous finds; local favorite Deas-Guyz in concert who feature an entertaining mix of old Motown, rhythm and blues, pop, rock, reggae and dance beats; nautical activities, featuring a variety of watersports, nature tours and boat rides; great dining on the harbour all-day and children activities.
September 27: Blufftons Oktoberfest! This year during the 10th Annual Beer & Brats Celebration, Old Town Bluffton will magically be transformed into a German Village as it hosts Blufftons Oktoberfest. More than two thousand herren und frauen will converge in the Bluffton Village (off 46 by the Post Office) to eat, sing, mingle, sport lederhosen, listen to polka music, try to speak German and possibly perform the Chicken Dance! This outdoor festival will offer tasty samples of German-style music, food and beer from 1-7 p.m. First held in 2004, the event has grown to its present site on 46 in the Bluffton Village and will now include its own Bier Garten and Classic Car Show, childrens activities and much, much more. The Rhimelanders, an authentic German Oompah band, will entertain from 1-3 p.m., followed by the outstanding local, nationally touring band, Cranford Hollow from 4-7 p.m. $5 entrance fee. September 29: Great Performances Series at the Arts Center, presents Mary Badham! September 30-October 19: The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina presents To Kill a Mockingbird! An American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama during the Great Depression and follows the journey of Scout and Jem Finch. Their father has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he didnt commit. As the trial progresses, Jem and Scout witness their community in a tense tug of war between justice and prejudice. Harper Lee found instant fame after To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, and the novel was showered with literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. 8 p.m. & 2 p.m., Sunday Matinees. 14 Shelter Cove Lane.
