October 1-October 19: The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina presents To Kill a Mockingbird! An American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama during the Great Depression and follows the journey of Scout and Jem Finch. Their father has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he didn’t commit. As the trial progresses, Jem and Scout witness their community in a tense tug of war between justice and prejudice. Harper Lee found instant fame after To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, and the novel was showered with literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. 8 p.m. & 2 p.m., Sunday Matinees. 14 Shelter Cove Lane. Tuesdays: The Coastal Discovery Museum Marine Science Expedition. The 2-hour expedition aboard research vessel SPARTINA with Marine Biologist Amber Kuehn will run from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. The participants will observe science in nature under microscope and display live organisms. The Captain will have living specimens on board of common fish, crabs, shrimp, etc. that can be found in the water. Participants will learn interesting and intricate facts about the biology of the Lowcountry waterway. A scientific explanation will accompany a trip through the marsh. From microscopic animals to dolphins, the possibilities are endless. Cost is $35 adult and $25 child (12 and under). Space is limited and reservations are required. Tuesdays: The Shelter Cove Farmers Market will be held every Tuesday, from April 29th until October 28th from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. During the summer months (June 17th-August 12th) the market will have extended hours from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. and will close with the fireworks display. The Shelter Cove Farmers Market features vendors selling local farm-fresh produce, art work, sweets, baked goods and other specialty foods, as well as prepared food vendors for those looking to grab a snack or dinner. Thursdays: The Hilton Head Island Audubon Society is conducting guided walks of the Audubon Newhall Preserve, 55 Palmetto Bay Rd., at 10 a.m., September, October, and November. Experienced naturalists will discuss the history and wildlife found in the 50 acre preserve. The walks are free to the public but donations are appreciated. Reservations are not required. Thursdays: May River Expedition to be offered by Coastal Discovery Museum! 10 a.m. until noon. This 2 hour exploration of Bluffton’s May River aboard research vessel SPARTINA will be led by Marine Biologist, Captain Amber Kuehn. Participants will observe nature up close with a display of live organisms. A scientific explanation will accompany a trip through this scenic river and salt marsh. From microscopic animals to dolphins, the possibilities are endless. The expedition will leave from the Calhoun St. Dock, Bluffton. October 10-26: Main Street Youth Theatre presents Guys and Dolls! This classic comedy has been called the perfect quintessential New York musical. This interactive cruise will take you from Hudson’s Dock out into Port Royal Sound where you’ll have a chance to see how a shrimp trawler works – and find out about all the critters that can be found in its nets. October 11: Salty Dog Annual Fall Fest, 12-4 p.m. Enjoy the Fall weather while sampling food from the restaurants of South Beach, sidewalk shopping, playing carnival games. October 10–12: 25th Annual Savannah Folk Music Festival presented by the Savannah Folk Music Society, a popular weekend festival devoted to the enjoyment, preservation and continuation of the living art of folk music. It features national and regional talent, in four locations around the City, beginning in Ellis Square on Friday from 7 to 11 p.m., Youth Songwriting Competition and Folk Songwriting workshop / Old Time Country Dance on Saturday and culminating in the Sunday Concert at Grayson Stadium from 2-7:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. October 12–19: 10th Annual Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival throughout Old Town Bluffton. Where Fine Art & the Bounty of the Sea Come Together! A showcase of locally-harvested seafood, cuisine, history, art and Southern hospitality with a boat parade and tours, concerts and performances, kayak tours, book signings, races, Art Around Town, a two-day Streetfest and much more. October 12:The 21st Polo for Charity event will be held at the historic Rose Hill Plantation, Bluffton. Come out and experience Bluffton’s biggest picnic… a polo event with loads of tailgating, divot stomping and plenty of people watching. The gates open at noon, and the match begins at 2 p.m. Known as Bluffton’s largest picnic, attendees are encouraged to get creative with their menu as well as their attire. There will also be a silent auction. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Okatie with event proceeds benefiting the Bluffton Boys and Girls Club and other local charities. Tuesdays (October 2 – November 11): Learn to throw a cast net at The Coastal Discovery Museum. Classes will be held at 3 p.m. at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. This hands-on program will show you the best way to learn to ‘open that net’ on every cast. Presented by Scott Moody, a local angler, that grew up primarily with salt water fishing and diving. Moody will share his experiences with others to help grow the sport of fishing in this class. Beginners are welcome, and you may bring your own net, or a loaner will be made available to you. October 15: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Nicholas Wallover at 3 p.m. to present a program on shore birds. Every year, tens of thousands of shorebirds descend in mass on South Carolina’s coast as part of migrations that span thousands of miles every year to nesting grounds as far as Alaska and the high Arctic. Many more will spend non-breeding months overwintering on our beaches, and a few species will nest along our coasts. You will learn about these incredible birds and the role of communities in South Carolina in protecting this important part of our coastal heritage. Wallover is the Regional Biologist for the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve and Manager of the McKenzie Field Station at Bennett’s Point. October 18: Take a “Waterway Excursion” with the Coastal Discovery Museum, from 9-11 a.m., the cruise will explore the waterways around the Pinckney Island Forest Preserve on board the Tammy Jane. The 2-hour educational cruise will circumnavigate the Pinckney Island (Skull Creek and Mackay Creek). You will learn about the salt marsh, maritime forest, barrier islands, and the history of Pinckney Island. A naturalist on board will help with identifying any plants or animals that are visible. October 27: Links Fore Literacy Gives Women Golfers a Chance to Have Fun While Supporting Our Mission! The Literacy Center and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry have teamed up to host an all-women, 9-hole golf outing to support literacy programs for kids and adults. 9 a.m. at Island West Golf Club in Bluffton. The entry fee is only $50 per golfer or $200 per team and includes a continental breakfast, practice range, greens fee, cart, lunch, awards reception and prizes. You can be a hole sponsor for only $100. All funds raised go toward improving literacy in Beaufort County. October 29: Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting Program at Coastal Discovery Museum! The Coastal Discovery Museum will host “Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting on Hilton Head Island” at 3 p.m. The presentation will focus on loggerhead sea turtle nesting habits and conservation efforts on the Island. Amber Kuehn, of the Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Protection Project Manager, will discuss the obstacles this endangered species faces on a populated beach including light pollution, nesting habitat destruction, litter, boating hazards, and predation. A power point presentation will be utilized to clearly define these examples with photographs and videos.
