Sea Pines is the "original" plantation (i.e. "subdivision") on Hilton Head. It is not too far from the Disney resort. Normally to even enter the gates, there is a $5 charge per car.

Sea Pines is home to the famous Harbour Town -- complete with lighthouse and PGA tournament golf course. There are also a lot of restaurants there, including the Salty Dog -- of t-shirt fame.

A trip to Sea Pines is something you *have* to do at some point on any extended trip to Hilton Head. If you sign up for the Hilton Head Island tour that the Disney resort offers, you will have some time in Sea Pines -- to tour the lighthouse or do a little shopping.

Hi, everyone! Just checking in. Finally feel like I can look forward to HH, since DS11 cross country season is over, and DD16 competitive band season is over, and DS11's ear surgery is over. . . . Now, just to get through the next couple of weeks of work!

Dottie -- I have to remember my thermal coffee mug so I can bring my own beverage to the turkey bowl! I think we will be ordering dinner from the resort for the first time ever, since we won't be able to bring as much with us with 2 additional adults in the van!

Really looking forward to seeing everyone. Jenn is psyched to see her friend Travis who she met at HH Christmas of 2002 -- they have been pen pals and fast friends since then but have not seen each other in all that time. Hoping he and his parents will join us for our DIS meet, too!

Hang in there, everyone! HH is worth whatever you have to get through to get there!
This is what my family looks like at this point: :bounce: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :bounce:

You guys have me even more excited about our upcoming HH trip, and I didn't think that was possibe! I am looking forward to meeting everyone. I think it may just be me and my son (17) but we will be there.

dis-happy - those chicken wings from Publix sound great! Maybe I'll do something similar with wings since I know those are a safe bet for me to eat. I'm going to send you a pm so I can get a pass for Sea Pines. I have always wanted to visit. Thanks so much for the offer!

I might wear my lime green identification thingy if I can find it. This get together sounds like so much fun. I hope the next 10 days fly by.

Ok, newbie question here...where's the closest Publix to the HH resort?

Wish we could join you! Now that we have some HH points, hopefully we might try spending a Thanksgiving or Christmas there (may be hard to do Thanksgiving given how little time we would have to get there and back, though).

There are two Publix stores fairly close to the resort. The closest one is near Sea Pines Circle. From the resort you turn right on 278. When you get to Sea Pines Circle (you'll know it when you get there, LOL!) you do 1/4 turn -- the equivalent of a right turn. At the first stop light (only a block or so away) you turn left into the Publix shopping center.

The other one (larger, greater selection, although the one at Sea Pines isn't bad...) is in the same shopping center as Wal-Mart. If you take Business 278 from I-95 (as opposed to the Cross Island Bridge), you will go right past it. If you're going from the resort, you turn left on 278 and go probably 4-5 miles and it will be on your left.

Just a word of warning for the newbie -- HH has strict architectural controls. The signage for businesses is sometimes hard to see and many businesses are hidden from the road.

disneyaholic- thanks for the info on Sea Pines. We did do the bus tour last year but I didn't know it was called Sea Pines. Will definitely go back this year as you really don't get enough time there to just wander around. How's the food at the Salty Dog Cafe? would love to eat there.

I'd like to know about the Salty Dog's food as well.

I posted a separate thread about the Red Fish. Anybody ever eaten there? I'd love to hear reviews if you have. Thanks!

Personally, I think Salty Dog is more the experience than the actual meal, LOL. It's very casual, but I didn't really think there was anything spectacular on the menu...

What IS neat is all the stuff around it -- the Salty Dog shops and a lot of other cute resort-type stuff. In the summer there is all kinds of entertainment in the area outside the restaurant and a neat outdoor bar. They have misters to help keep you cool when it's really hot out. :sunny: There are also footprints to show you where to stand so that you can be picked up by the webcam and wave to your friends back home... :wave2:

Here's the link to a website that may help: http://www.saltydogcafe.com/index.html

JMHO on restaurants in Sea Pines:

We ate at Salty Dog Cafe once, and once was enough for us. Not my favorite. Not necessarily bad, just not my favorite.

However, I do really, really like Truffles, located at Plantation Center. Great, interesting food. Alas, no water view like some of the other restaurants, but it still has atmosphere.

Cafe Europa is wonderful, with the water view, located at the pier of Harbor Town. If you don't want to spend a fortune, go between 5 and 6 pm and get the early bird special. WONDERFUL DEAL!!! And you can usually get a water view/ sunset view table at that time. Dinner is $15. and includes 3 courses. An entree alone after 6 pm runs in the $20. range.

Best place for lunch: Harbour Town Bakery, across from the Harbour Town playground. Enormous, fantastic sandwiches, great coffee. Beautiful pastries at breakfast.

Best ice cream on a hot day: either at South Beach (where Salty Dog cafe is located) or the ice cream shop at the base of the lighthouse: you can get mango sorbet. Delicious!!!!

To work off your wonderful meals on HH, be sure to make the trek to the Harbour Town lighthouse and climb it. The view is fantastic. Or, if you like horses, you can book a trail ride at Lawton Stables, a 1 hour ride through the forest preserve. Very nice.

See you soon!

Can't wait! 5 more days to work, work....
Making a list of restaurants I haven't tried. The list is now too long....might as well have a dining guide in my hands. <g>
:earsgirl:

I plan to wait until we check-in to get the dining guide then cross reference it with the info on these boards to make dining decisions since this will be our first trip to HHI.

We did decide to get Thanksgiving dinner through the resort for convenience and luckily we remembered Friday afternoon that Friday was the deadline to order.

Quick question for you HHI vets...is there a knife suitable for carving a turkey provided in the rooms or should we bring one?

Hi tripletvan--

We are using a restaurant called Kenny B's French Quarter Cafe, located on Pope Circle (right outside the back entrance of Sea Pines). They have a Thanksgiving menu for 8, $89., called the Cajun Fried Turkey package, and it includes:

whole fried or traditional turkey
whipped potatoes and gravy
gumbo or she-crab soup
jambalaya
corn bread
broccoli raisin salad
cranberry sauce
green beans
chocolate pecan pie

Disclaimer: this is the first year we are doing this, so I can't totally vouch for the Thanksgiving meal, but the restaurant itself has a good reputation. Plus, it sounds interesting! And I don't want to cook. Their phone number:843-785-3315. You tell them what time you want to pick up your dinner, between 12-3 on Thanksgiving Day.

HTH!!!

I am so excited that our trip countdown is getting closer!!!

Bring one. There are knives, but you will probably have better luck if you bring one of your own. ::yes::
