HH restaurants

Haven't seen this one posted - the Iron Wolf at Wexford village. We had Easter dinner there and it was fabulous food. A little of everything, DH had Osso Bucco there and said it was as good as he had ever had. The menu said the owners formerly had a restaurant in Vermont. Large saltwater aquarium kept the kids occupied, too.

Any other suggestions for buffets on HHI? We will be feeding two twenty-something boys along with the family.

I've heard Skillets serves a good breakfast. Is this like a Ponderosa restaurant or not?

No, Skillets serves a whole breakfast in a skillet. Eggs, potatoes, meat, veggies, etc. I'm not a breakfast person, so I've never been there, but DH and the kids have and said it was good!

There is a great breakfast buffet at the Westin down the road, though!

Mellow Mushroom is a pizza joint our friend introduced us to in Atlanta. There is one in HH once you go past the big circle. (Look kids, Big Ben.) MM has a great laidback atmosphere and great gourmet style pizza.

We were not huge fans of the Old Oyster Factory...not the best oysters we've ever had, but perhaps a lot of that is expectations. HOWEVER, I always recommend that people go there becasue it has a wonderful atmosphere, and the food is good enough and not totally outrageous. We had a beautiful view of the dock last time we were there. We always go back, but just know what to expect food-wise now.

I must be the only person I know who wasn't crazy about San Miguel's. I didn't even like the margaritas there. I don't know if we hit it on an "off" night or what. :confused3

Nope, we didn't care for it either. Can't even remember what we had because it was several years ago -- never went back after that. There are too many dining options in Hilton Head to go back to a place you weren't crazy about! :goodvibes

We didn't really care for the Old Oyster Factory. We like North Carolina Calabash style fried seafood and in our opinion the Oyster Factory was just a little too "fancy" for our tastes. When we go in August, I hope to try Hudsons to see how they are. Plus we do like Mexican so I plan on trying San Miguels.

Eugene's for dinner, sit in the bar section, and watch Michael flambe your shrimp or steam your lobster or crab legs. They have an awesome deal, and it is usually locals. For breakfast, the place in Coligny Plaza (name escapes me).

OK - I thought I had my list complete but I am getting confused with all the reviews!!

I am definitely putting Guiseppi's on my list and probably Scott's...

Out of the following, which would you prefer:
Old Oyster Factory
Old Fort Pub
Hudson's

Has anyone tried Charlie Crabs?...(not sure if that is it).

Any other suggestions would be great....and also, can you give some restaurants that won't burn a hole in our pockets!.... I know some of them will but just wanted the info anyway!

No one has mentioned the GARDEN OAK GRILL. It is down the same road as the Old Oyster Factory and we think it is far better. We eat there everytime we are at HH & it is second only to Chef Gordon's Private Affair!

Sueg, can you tell us more about the Garden Oak Grill? Prices, type of menu, family friendly, etc?
Thanks!

They are different. The Old Fort Pub is fine dining and fairly expensive. The Old Oyster Factory is family dining but certainly not cheap. I don't know Hudson's well enough to give a good opinion on it. Personally I'd take the OOF but we really enjoy it. I'll have to try the Garden Oak Grill, haven't done so yet.

We didn't like the food at San Miguel's either. Found it to be totally bland and boring. It wasn't bad - just flavorless. It's been five years since that visit, so I've kind of felt maybe we hit a bad night, and that maybe since we do like this kind of food that we should give it another chance, based on so many good reviews. However, there are so many choices at HH, that it's probably going to stay on our back burner, for a time that we don't want to drive somewhere to eat.

On another note, Garden Oak Grill looked somewhat interesting, but was not open for lunch the day we dropped by. Too many choices - to few opportunities!

Garden Oak Grill is where the Spartina Grill used to be. New owner, but some of the same staff. Spartina was one of our absolute favorites, but we've only eaten at Garden Oak one time since it changed over. We thought it was a bit pricier than before. Many of the menu items seemed to be the same or similar. We keep meaning to try it again, but haven't made it back. (That "too many choices" thing!)

Hudson's is less expensive than Old Oyster Factory, and not quite as upscale. We do enjoy it though -- the hushpuppies make the trip totally worthwhile!

We go to HH often, so I have to plunge in here. We don't care for the Old Oyster Factory or Hudson's (except for Hudson's in the winter months when they are one of the few restaurants that pull oysters out of the creek and serve them fresh). Our favorite traditional fried seafood favorite is the Crazy Crab as you come on the island (not the one in Sea Pines). The fried seafood is very good, and their hush puppies are the best (slightly sweet and peppery). It has beautiful marsh views and is very good place with children. There is a fenced-in playground beneath an outdoor deck area where parents can sip their wine while waiting for a table and keep an eye on the children below them. For a reasonably priced meal in a place where you will be comfortable with children, Captain's Seafood (on the highway to the right of the villas).

For fine dining, we like Le Bistro in Pineland Mall. It's small and stays pretty crowded, but the food is outstanding. Charley's on New Orleans Road is also good, roomier with a nice atmosphere. Old Fort Pub is good for a romantic evening, but I don't know that I'd take children there - pretty expensive. Fratello's is very good Italian across the highway and to the right of the villas, in one of those strip malls. Definitely should make a reservation for any of these places.

We used to go to San Miguels, but discovered a very good Mexican place down toward the bridge. I wish I could tell you the name of it, but it's located on the right as you come on the island, right before you get to the toll road exits. There are a few buildings there on the right - I think they have a sign for the Mexican place. We still go to San Miguels for outdoor drinks and the music.

GrammieMame,
Is it Mi Tiera? I think that is the name of the place that is on the right, but very easy to miss. We've not been there, but it was recommended by one of the CM's as a good place to go for Mexican food.

BUMP!! For those of us who will be visiting HHI in the next few weeks. Yeah!! Can you tell I'm excited!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

OK, here's my list:

Wild Wings
La Normandie
Cafe Europa lunch
Hudson's lunch
Old Oyster Factory
Old Ft Pub (fancy)

should I add any of these?
Redfish
Truffles
Alexander's
Garden Oak Grill
Crazy Crab
Le Bistro
Fitzgeralds
San Miguel's
Giuseppe's
