We go for Thanksgiving, and since DH always golfs (he's now played every available golf course on the Island-methinks that means he golfs too much). The Palmetto Dunes courses just across the way are probably the closest nice courses. The Fazio is probably hardest-since all the greens are surrounded by sand traps, you really have to be able to get the ball up in the air. We were with another golfer once who couldn't do that and she just quit about half way thru. The Robert Trent Jones course has some areas that go by the main road, maybe not so scenic. That leaves the Arthur Hills course as probably the best bet. And they all give a discount to Disney resort guests. Just off island, Hilton Head National is the best "bang for the buck". DH used to be an assistant greenskeeper at a golf course, so he's VERY picky, and yet, he always comes back from there raving about how good a condition it's in. If you want to see the ocean, don't be fooled by the name of the Ocean course-you only see the ocean on one hole and just on the green (15 if you go).
Places to eat? Sea Shack, Black Marlin, Skull Creek Boathouse, Main Street Cafe, Salty Dog (that one is more about the experience than the food). I hesitate to recommend Roastfish and Cornbread right now. We've always loved it, but in the last few weeks it's gotten quite a few scathing reviews. Until I hear something positive again, we're reluctant.
Thanks for the info on golf and placed to eat Simba's Mom. I might only get one round in and I'm thinking about playing Harbour Town course. I've seen a lot of people recommend the Hilton National course. I just might go there. Thanks again!

Harbour Town-people say that every golfer needs to do that course at least once. But at those prices, so far DH has done it...once! However, one year he went to the Heritage there on Easter Sunday and went to the sunrise service on the 18th green with 1000 other church-goers and a couple of the pros. Now THAT's something to do at least once also!
