HURRICANE SEASON STARTS!!! Oh, and Publix Supermarkets are going to install BIGGER generators in thier stores so we can keep the fresh meat/diary/frozen sections up and running. They will be installed in July and will be at the stores that are 40,000 square feet and above. (which is most of are stores now).

Wow, that is awesome! Last year after Wilma, we had to really seach for a store with meat or dairy...this was after the power came back, but before they got new shipments...very glad to hear this decision.

Now, let's hope we don't have a storm in June.

I'll take a good thunderstorm, even the ones with tornados (like we have had the last 2 nights) over the horrible hurricanes you all have to deal with. Here's hoping it is a very quiet season for everyone in Fl.

Me too, its great isn't it? All my neighbors are just now getting thier Fences and Roofs fixed now, just in time for it all to be knocked down again!

Moved here late July last year. Hope we all make it through this next season. I just keep reading that we are at the beginning of a decade long cycle of above normal hurricane activity. Boy did I pick the right time to move to Florida or what?

I sure wish the local gas stations would have a better way of keeping gas flowing before and after - remember the huge lines of cars in every gas station every time there's a possibility of one hitting? Then when you finally make it to the pump, they run out?!!!

I'm from Ohio originally and have been through some terrible tornadoes, and now have experienced hurricanes and IMHO I really think both are equally as bad - true you have more time to prepare with a 'cane BUT you have to remember that means that as soon as it forms out at sea, the local weather guys will be all over it and you will hear 24/7 for the next week how IT IS COMING AND WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE! This happens over and over for each one that forms out at sea throughout the whole season - believe me, the drawn out stress is also really tough on you!

I've noticed that the grocery stores, Target & Walmart around here have been stocking up on water. Pallets & pallets of it everywhere. I remember thinking it was odd at the time when I first saw it about a month or so ago, but honestly it makes more sense to be prepared early.

Speaking of PUBLIX, did any of you know (probably Poohbear123 did) that when power was out in some of their stores after the hurricane they "trusted" their customers to "pay later" as the systems were down and they couldn't process check cards, credit cards etc. I thought that was truly amazing!

Nope not here in Miami, that must have been at "smaller towns". We have a back-up generator for the Cash Registers, but not for meat/dairy and frozen food. By the way, the generator story was on the front page of today's Miami Herald.

This will be our first hurricane season here, but at least I didn't have to deal with snow this past winter.

We were here for Wilma last year, but it was pretty much a non-event up this way. I little wind, a little rain, somebody's garbage bag blew down the street... I'm retired from an electric utility company and will take at least some comfort in not having to go to work for days on end like I used to up in New York where some storms will do a lot of damage.

ITA. There comes a point when you just have to turn off the TV, the coverage can be really stressful. And then they pan over to the guy at the Nat'l Hurricane Center...you know when they do that that it's not looking good for your area!

I once heard someone say to watch The Weather Channel, and look to see where they have stationed Jim Cantore...he is usually at ground zero! Don't know how accurate that is, but I'll pay attention this year.

People can REALLY stress you out, they are on the air DAYS before telling everyone to be prepared. Is it coming, is it not coming, is it going here, is it going there, at least with snow you just WAKE up and its there! I really start to prepare at least a day before land fall.

The media coverage drives me up the freaking wall. I'll check the news every so often if there's a hurricane coming (Bay News 9 is a bit calmer than the other stations IMHO, for those in the Tampa area) or I'll check online, but unless it's within a day or two of reaching landfall, I refuse to panic about it.

If you live here, you should be prepared at all times. It's just stupid not to be, you know?

Yeap, getting close now...we're STILL waiting on our roof repairs We actually have a guy coming to give us an estimate for shutters today. If they don't come through looks like dh will be installing them himself. He's getting too tired of putting up that plywood.

I think it's great about Publix installing generators. Of course, that doesn't help with the gas shortage everytime a hurricane brews somewhere close by. I know they were talking about requiring gas stations to have generators too but last I heard is that "certain" gas stations will be required and as to when this will happen, who knows?

All's I know is that it's the gas thing that worries me. To get out of dodge, you need...gas. After the storm, to get out of dodge you need...gas. IF you have a generator, you need...gas...hmmmm, there's a pattern there, huh? Your gas tank might be full before the storm and you might have a few containers full of gas for your generator, but sooner or later you will run out and most likely there won't be anymore...gas. And, if you want to get all the way out of Florida from HERE, you'll need more...gas!!

Is concerned, this is what my DH did last year...He filled UP the tank before the storm, than he would "top it off" if it got near 3/4 of a tank. Than, he filled up about 5- 3 gallon gas cans (plastic ones now) so we had enough gas. We also have 2 generators and that powers the Refrigerator, A/C and lights in half the house. Do your self a favor if you have the $$...BUY A HONDA GENERATOR!! They are the BEST!
