My personal favorite is using furniture to reserve a parking space.
My brother brought his girlfriend home when he got out of the Marines. She was from South Carolina, so a big snow storm was a novelty to her. One afternoon she and I shoveled out his parking space and used a chair to save it (notice preposition ending sentence). She couldnt believe this actually worked and that no one would steal the furniture or the parking spot.
