Hertz AAA Discount -- is this a joke? :)

Two months out, and we're still looking for an excellent rate on a 9-day compact car rental ... National and Dollar look like they have the lowest rates, but they're still more than we can comfortably spend on a rental car. So this morning I read that Hertz has a AAA discount, and I called to get a quote. WITH the discount they offer, they quoted me almost $150 MORE than the base rates of other rental companies. How is this possible? I hung up with the customer service rep just before I burst into laughter. $370 for a 9-day compact car rental? YIKES! :)

Maybe it's the lack of money in my wallet talking, but where can I get a very good rate on a rental from a reputable agency without busting my vacation budget? YES, I have been faithfully plugging in the coupon/promo codes from MouseSavers.com, but they're still not producing fantastic results. Maybe the late September/early October travel dates are to blame? Is anyone having luck with early Autumn rentals?

Have you tried hotwire.com? See what they quote you.

Also, I just tried priceline.com for the first time for a rental car in Pensacola, Fl and the price is $199.50 for 6 days inclusive of fees renting a full size from Hertz.

Not great, but lots better than I could find elsewhere.

Good luck.

I was able to book an 8 day rental through budget for 9/24-10/1-2003 from their deals page ontheir website for $189 for a full size. www.mousesavers.com also has some great deals. Good Luck.

I just did a rental on the Hertz site for 9 days on a compact. The cost was $227.32 for those 9 days with the AAA discount before taxes. I used the last week of Sep. into Oct.

There are also coupon codes that you could use to lower the price. Ones for a free day, $25 off for a weekly. I would also check to see if the price is better on a full size. Sometimes there are better deals on those.

Why not try looking at the Hertz website? As with the airlines you will get better prices on the Hertz, AAA, and Orbitz website than calling Hertz.

I tried using the Hertz website but I couldn't figure out how to use the AAA discount. I tried entering our AAA membership number into the promo code fields, but no dice. Is there a specific code to use if you're a AAA member?

I ended up renting from Dollar for $225 for 9 days -- all taxes and fees included. So it looks like that deal was better than Hertz anyway.

Thanks for the information!

You use your club code in the box on the Hertz site. It is the 3 digits that appear before your membership number.

Why not try it again and look on the specials page for the $25 off special, and a free day special?

For AAA you use your three digit club code.
