hershey park

We camped in Gettysburg for a week two summers ago. What fun!! We did two different days at Hershey. One day in the actual amusement park and the other day in Hershey World (or Chocolate World). My kids were 5 and 8 at the time and we all had a great time! Have fun. Eat a choclate bar for me! :yay:

Just wanted to mention, they have a ton of concerts(separate ticket purchase required) at Hersheypark Stadium during the summer months. Depending on the act, this can cause a major headache with traffic. In fact, I just heard today that The Police will be performing sometime in July. So, you may want to plan accordingly.

What are your travel dates? They usually have sporting events, concerts and shows all summer long at Hershey Park Stadium, Herhsey Arena or the Giant Center. They are all located within the same complex as Hershey Park.

Thanks for the great info. we are planning on going the first week of august. When we finish in PA we are going to MD to see a baseball game and maybe enjoy six flags baltimore(we will have season passes). At this point I'm trying to figure out how many days to book in PA and how many in MD. I also heard if you get to the park after a certain time you can enjoy the evening in the park as well as the next day for the price of a one day ticket. Do you know anything about this?
Right now i am looking at staying at Country Inn and Suites in Harrisburg. Any other info would be great.
thanks again

Just a note... Six Flags America is not in Baltimore. It's in Largo in Prince George's co (I believe). It's actually closer to Wash D.C. I'd guestimate that it is another 35 (maybe more) miles below Baltimore City. We live about 25 miles North of Balto. and it's 70 miles for us to go to Six Flags America. Also, I would not go to Six Flags on a weekend. We used to have annual passes (for 4 years in a row) and quit getting them b/c we found the clientelle to be much too aggressive for our liking. Last time we went was summer of '05. Foul language was rampant (hate that), inconsiderate guests almost everywhere, problems w/ line cutters, at times guests were so aggressive w/ one another, I felt VERY uncomfortable. :sad2: Weekends bring TONS of busses. We found the weekdays to be a little better, but still not worth the aggrevation. Not what I want to expose my kids to. We've complained, but it always seems to fall on deaf ears. They do have some great coasters though. Good Luck if you decide to visit.
Hershey is very clean, family friendly and we did not encounter the bad language or bad behaviors (line cutting, threats amongst guests). Like Disney, they are family friendly and don't tolerate that junk. We've seen them tell teens to watch their choice of words!

We did Hershey last spring and was a nice time, however wanted to note the area is not very handicapped accessible; if thats an issue for you. My DS broke his ankle 2 days before we went & was in a wheelchair. Ramps were few &Choc World didn't have auto doors! I even wrote a letter with no response, so I was not impressed. But we did have a "sweet" time! You really do smell it in the air. And you can definetly do the Park and Choc World in one day.

I tend to disagree w/ this statement. I ended up renting EVC b/c of bursitis in my knee (just couldn't walk anymore). I found it reasonably easy to get around the park. It's not as easy as Disney, but it was certainly doable (unlike Bush Gardens in Williamsburg ) They even have a pass type thingy that their employees sign and give you a return time so that you don't wait in the queue in a w/c or evc.

WHAT??!!! See you miss one year and look! I have to go check that out. Where the heck did they build it there isn't that much land there? And is it by that soaker coaster that we still have not riden because it is always so crowded.

OHHH!! You have to ride the Soaker coaster!! It's the best. :thumbsup2

BTW... be prepared...neither Hershey or Six Flags will allow any outside food or beverages. Six Flags will confiscate it at the gates when they inspect your bags. And you will have to go thru a metal detector at Six Flags so leave your unnecessary metal items in the car. I'm pretty sure that Hershey will take food/drinks too or allow you to take them back to your car. I'm thinking that they had bag inspection (but you know sometimes things just start to run together). You will LOVE Hershey. It's not WDW, but it's really cool in its own way. :cool1:

I don't know anything about bringing outside food into the park. But, I do know that they have picnic pavilions outside the park entrance that you are welcome to use. And don't forget that Hershey is nowhere near as big as Disney. So, it is just a short walk to your car or to the park's front entrance which is where the rental lockers are located. So, you really don't need to bring the food into the park.

BTW, I have never been to Six Flags America, but I have heard the same things that stitchlovestink has mentioned about that park. I have wanted to go ever since they introduced the Superman ride back in 2000. But, the bad press they have been getting has kinda kept me away.

Hey there, I love Hersheypark. A couple of pointers... If you are looking for a nice but not overly expensive hotel, I always recommend the White Rose Motel. (www.whiterosemotel.com) Its only about 2 or 3 mins from the park, in Hershey, PA and its not to terribly expensive, maybe about $80-$90 a night? The quality is right around Comfort Inn style and as it is family run the customer service there is great! I have never stayed at the Hershey Lodge, but there is a reason, Its really expensive!

Six Flags America is not worth your time, accepting for of course Superman Ride of Steel (greatest steel coaster in existence!). I have very little faith in Six Flags, but I keep saying if they could ever get customer service right they would have the industry in the bag, but they are so BAD at it. There are a few good Six Flags parks, but America is not one of them.

A few parks I would recommend visiting that are close by are Dorney Park in Allentown and Knoebels. Especially Knoebels. Its in Elysburg,PA about an hour and a half from Hershey its up in the hills a bit. However it is the epitimy of a classic well run amusement park. Its fun, pretty inexpensive and they are building as we speak the a classic flying turns roller coaster (wooden trough bobsled roller coaster).

With discounts, there are very few, I know you can usually buy discounted tickets at the Giant Grocery Store in town, (Hershey) and it saves you maybe $5 a ticket though.

Hope this is helpful!

Jennifer

Yes, that is a very good point. Actually, we've eaten at the picnic tables under the one side of the stadium. And there are rest rooms right there also. I guess what I really meant to refer to was the drinks. I require quite a lot of fluid (med I take makes me thirsty all the time!) We were there on a very warm day, actually it was downright hot & humid (which was great for the wet rides). I can't begin to think how much money we went thru buying drinks b/c we couldn't bring any in w/ us. Somehow, I am thinking that we bought a cup for like $6 or $7 and you could refill it as much as you wanted for 99 cents a refill?! I could be confused though w/ a different park as we go to several. But like you said, food isn't necessary. I just hate drinking from public fountains though. :scared:

Again, great info-thank you all!! Now I am concerned about Six Flags but my DH DS are so excited to ride SupermanAAAHHHH

Thanks for the warning about Six Flags.

This is why we LOVE Hershey Park. It is so family friendly and clean. And it is the whole chocolate experience and magic, not as strong as Disney magic but a close second. We love that for us that it is practically in our backyard so we jump in our car and head up there since it is only 2 hours away, but we usually stay overnight in the Lodge for the experience!

We also go every year. Business trip turned into entertainment for my family. I am the one who purchases group tickets. I will start again in about 1 month. Waiting for my paperwork to arrive from Hershey. Pm in anyone is interested.
I also have a 12 yr old son in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy and although the hills get alittle tough, I have not found it to be bad for wheelchair accessability. And I should know.. LOL
We stay at the Hershey Hilton, although we used to stay at the Lodge. I love the restaurants at the Lodge. Hilton offered better points with my rewards card..(funny how its all about redeeming points somewhere)

This is one place I have always wanted to go to. I now have a peanut allergic child and I kind of think this would not be the best place to take her. :guilty: I will have to live vicariously through all of you.

I'm a mom of a PA dd and we go to Hershey every summer. We also just discovered the Halloween weekends and have made that a new family tradition as well. I am very impressed with Hershey's allergy "awareness". Hershey has great labelling which I trust. They also had peanut free treats as alternatives to give as free samples in Chocolate World and trick or treating in the park. Definately look into it! :thumbsup2
