My brother just called to tell me that he is having hernia surgery on Tuesday. The hernia is in the groin area and the Doctors told him it would be an all day thing.

Does anyone have experience with this? What is the recovery time? He is in the Coast Guard in FL and has been put on light duty.

He told me he is not worried about it because he gets a week and a half of no work. Sounds like a 21 year old! :)

I just had hernia surgery, a little under a month ago. Will did a lot of research for me when we found out I would have to have surgery.

It just depends on what type of hernia your brother as to what his recovery will be like. :D I think we found that there were at least 4 or 5 different types of hernia.

One thing good -- your brother is young, healthy and strong! Boy, that means a lot when recovering from any type of surgery!

I wish him all the best with his surgery and his recovery. :D

Dh had this surgery earlier this year. It was outpatient, took about 45 mins tops. Was done on a Wed. He has a desk job and returned half day the following Monday(he is stubborn! I thought he should stay home). Anyway, the first 3 days are the worst. The first night he woke up in tears when the shot from the surgery had worn off! I made sure the painkiller stayed in him for those first 3 days. Had to give him Phenergan to combat the pain killer nausea. Was a lot of effort for him to get up and go to the bathroom those first days. I lost 6 pounds from the ordeal! Was very draining on me as I had to be mom to the kids AND nurse to him :p ! There is a site on the web that actually has a discussion board about hernias! We looked up and read a lot beforehand. Good luck to him!

I'm an expert on hiatal hernias.
I've had 6 surgeries :(
All have been day stays....ranging from a few hours to almost all day.
The second day is the worst. But recovery is fast.
Just don't exert and start lifting things too fast.......that's the hard one once you feel better.

I guess I should add DH's was an inguinal hernia repair. They put mesh in too. It was the traditional repair procedure. He was in the outpatient room for a couple hours afterward. Here is that board! http://members.boardhost.com/hernia1/
Meriweather, why so many surgeries? Did they come undone??:(

Yep....all are from stitches coming undone from a previous surgery :(
I've also had mesh.
They pop open every once in awhile.........different places, different stitches. I was finally told if it didn't bother me, or get bigger, just leave them.....so it was been over 3 years now.
I was going every 6 months for awhile :( Not fun!!

I am coming back from one now...It was a mesh redo..thus they had to cut verses lathroscope...which is much easier. I stayed one day..over night in hospital. Surgeon wanted a second night but I was not "behaving" well with the diet restrictions ect:rolleyes: I did go home...stayed home for two weeks. I am working but very limited activity. No lifting until mid-Feb is the Dr's orders at this point. His age may dictate a quicker recovery and also if it is a lathroscope vs and cut with general anistetic. Good luck to him! :)

My DH had 3 repaired at the same time - 2 inguinal and 1 at the naval. They took him early to surgery and I hadn't gotten there yet. When I got to the hospital which should have been an hour before his surgery they told me he was in recovery and would probably be staying overnight. They said there was a problem and they were might be taking him back in for surgery.

What happened was the Dr. punctured his bladder with the scope. What was supposed to be day surgery turned out to be a long ordeal. He was sent home with a catheter for almost 3 weeks.

I'm really worried because he thinks he has another hernia. I didn't realize they could come undone - this was about 1 1/2 years ago.
