Hermit Crab races GONE from Castaway Cay

I was sailing on the Dream this past weekend with my sister and nieces (their first cruise) and I was surprised to find out that the Hermit Crab races have been canceled on Castaway Cay. After a bit of asking I was told by a CM that there's a new Environmentalist on the island and she did away with the races. She felt that the crabs claws were too hot on the pavement (I kid you NOT). The CM also told me that they tried a few methods for keeping the pavement cool but the Environmentalist still believed it was too harsh for the crabs................REALLY. Please if you want the races back contact Disney, leave comments on the comment cards, talk to guest services. Let's get these back!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never even knew they existed, but I can understand the reason. That pavement gets tortuously hot!

Um....maybe there's a reason that Disney has an environmentalist? I know that they had to agree to only developing a small percentage of Castaway Cay as part of the agreement for them to build there.

I imagine that's the reason they have an environmentalist and are following their recommendations.

When I mentioned "new" it meant they changed out the old and hired a replacement. Don't really follow the train of thought of how development of an island is connected to hermit crab races. If they negate the HCR (hermit crab races) then they should negate the sting ray experience.....oh but wait that generates revenue... ;(

I didn't like how hot it was for my kids! Feet are way more tender than claws! I doused towels with ice water for them to stand on, but after we said "never again." They need to do it in the shade or put up a tent.

Why would we want to keep torturing animals for the sake of our entertainment? Are we no better than we were in gladiator times?

Flipflops are an amazing invention.

And since I've never had claws and I doubt any of us here have, I'm not sure we can say that feet are more tender than something we've never had.

Seriously LOL???? Disney made the right decision with this one. You could always purchase your own hermit crabs at Petco, build a race track from Pinterest and do it at home.

If the environmentalist says it's too hot for the crabs then I'm very happy DCL stopped the practice.

(And I wish they would also stop offering swims with dolphins as excursions. Those are not ethical.)

Wow, I just thought I'd send a comment along. Really didn't see the need for bashing. Isn't it better sometimes to read something you may not agree with and go along. Whatever happened to the golden rule? The nasty comments telling me what to do etc are just proof at how nasty our society has become. Feel free to write some other nasty comments if you have the need to but rest assured, I will not stoop to your level of degradation.

They should build them a tiny synthetic turf racetrack. Also apartments.

Mainly because I want to see a tiny hermit crab futon.

I thank you for the heads up and will write Disney to complain, along with my two teenagers who shook their heads and said, "Disney's lost it," when they heard. They love the hremit cran races. It sounds to me like an officious "environmentalist" whose real concern is putting a damper on fun- unless it is a cost cutting merasure by Disney, which I suspect is the.real answer. Always follow the money with Disney. If the real concern was hermit crabs' feet, they could have just done it in the shade or even in a small puddle of water. I'm not even a hermit crab race professional and yet I've got lots of solutions for temperature issues.

Actually Disney is pretty big into protecting the environment and conservation. I highly doubt it's a money issue.

Please tell me you were joking when you said the suggestion of flip flops was proposed by another poster? Your feelings are real, just like the crabs that are caught, taken out of their natural environment of sandy damp usually dark conditions (but not for food, which I have no problem with, just for your entertainment) placed on a searingly hot concrete surface that you and your kids could not stand on, surrounded by unusual amounts of noise and you think that is ok and have no problem with it if they just move it under a tent? Animal welfare attitudes in this country need to change!

Whatever happened to the golden rule?

The Golden Rule teaches us to treat others as we would like to be treated. Amen on that, but, um...aren't you advocating for forcing crabs into races by making them crawl across very hot pavement? The crabs only "race" under those conditions because it hurts & they're trying to get off the hot pavement.

You wouldn't really want someone to do that to you, would you?
