Here's A Question for Everyone

I'm on metformin which is hellish on one's liver, so it is recommended that I not drink a lot - if any. I wasn't a heavy drinker before, and my drinking habits haven't changed, but now at least I can give my friends an excuse when they bug me about it :thumbsup2:

I have... MAYBE... one drink every other month. If my Mom is taking DH and I out, and she's paying. Or if we're at WDW and I can grab a gray goose slushie - but I can't even finish that.

To the OP:

You just gave me a great idea for next halloween! :cool1:

JK! (maybe)

Seriously, yes, my husband and I both drink. Responsibly. Just because I have kids does not mean I should not be able to enjoy a legal, adult beverage! And while I absolutely do not "need" a drink to have fun, it is definitely the sprinkles on my fun cake!

Honestly, I can't imagine touring the WS at Epcot an not indulging in a couple of drinks simply because my kids were in tow.

I occasionally have a drink, 3 or 4 times a month at the end of a shift. I have on a couple of occasions in the last 3 years had a drink of wine at the end of a night shift as well.

awww i'm sorry you were miserable lol. thanks for clarifying that tho, because 1 or 2 i don't have a problem with.

the DSIL that i have that drinks them has them CONSTANTLY. she either won't go to family events because she "can't handle being around the alcohol" or she'll bring a 6 pack of the NA stuff and drink it....family events or friend events....which...they do every weekend.

and like i said i don't mind once in a while, but even when they stop by just to say "hi" she's got the 6 pack of the NA with her and i'm always thinking "you can't just have water??? or grape juice??? something HEALTHY for the baby you're carrying??" but she doesn't listen to anyone so it doesn't matter what i say.

your DSIL should check the label, those NA beers have a (small) alcohol content, its about 0.05 percent, but there IS a measurable amount of alcohol in them.

Probably about twice a week, I'll have a beer or a glass of wine. About 2 or 3 times a year, I'll have several drinks, like if we're out on the town or at a party. By "several" I mean two to four drinks.

I think it's important to show my kids that adults can drink responsibly and in moderation.

oh i've mentioned that. i mentioned it once to her, and she FREAKED out on me and told me it's none of my business what she does with her own body, and i mentioned to her husband and his response was "yeah, but you'd have to drink like all 6 of them for it to equal one normal beer."

trust me, once i saw her drinking them constantly i brought it up but she didn't want to hear anything about it. she thinks it's perfectly fine to drink them all the time. :confused3 what else can i do, you know?

You COULD sneak some gin into it! :rotfl:

watch the fun!!!
hehehehehhee

How often do you drink alcoholic beverages? Is it a daily routine for you? Do you 'kick back' at the end of the day with a glass of wine or a beer?

Here's why I ask...

Many of my neighbors drink openly. In fact, the one thing that really shocked me was when I took my kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood last fall and the parents carted around a wagon filled with a cooler of beer. :confused3

I just don't "get" the whole drinking thing. Occasionally, I'll enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail, but it's not an every day or even and every week thing. It is very occasional. But my neighbors seem to drink all the time.

And we all have kids in the pre-school to middle/high school age range. What does this say to them? When they see mommy pulling a kids' wagon with a cooler of beer - it makes me really worried for when these kids get to high school. They'll have access to it which will lead to unfortunate events...

I don't know. To each his own, I guess. But I'm trying to be a responsible parent and set a good example. One stupid mistake can ruin someone's entire life...and a kid that drinks too much can lead to a mistake like that.

Thoughts? Flames? ;)

Thanks for reading...

This again????

You wouldn't like my neighborhood either. Plenty of "open drinking" going on around here. Spontaneous parties break out during the summer, with people calling you over as you walk down the street to have a drink while we watch the kids run around and PLAY....yes, just shocking.

We have a fully stocked bar, wines we've bought and put down for a dozen years or more, table wine in the fridge, beer downstairs. I have wine sometimes during the week, and occasionally a mixed drink on the weekend.

And we're having people over for Mint Juleps on Saturday, with a bourbon themed menu.

And yet somehow, we manage to be responsible citizens and parents.

Party time tends to be around 5ish in this neighborhood. One neighbor even has a martini sign in the window. When it's lighted, it means, C'mon over, neighbor!

It's weird, I can go weeks or even months without a drink, then I'll have a drink or two every day for a week or so, then it tapers off and I don't have one for a while. No rhyme or reason that I can figure out! I don't tend to drink while out, only because it's so much cheaper to drink at home. DH does order us a bottle of wine to split when at a fancy restaurant though (we don't drink so much that we can't drive home, we usually have some wine left and the restaurant wraps it up for us).

I agree with many of the others, having children witness responsible drinking by adults is fine.

If we go out to dinner maybe once a month (Sometimes not even that) I will have a glass of wine. Other than that I would really prefer a Diet Coke and that's usually what I get.

Try as you might, OP, you'll never convince me that there is anything wrong in responsibly drinking alcohol. To me, responsibly = as long as I'm not endangering myself or others. So my answer to your basic question is: whenever I want.

Furthermore, I am proud to say that my children (teenagers) have heard me speak the words "I can't drive, I've had too much to drink." I felt like at those moments I was being a STELLAR role model, thank you very much. I don't wish for my children never to drink. I wish for them to do so legally and responsibly. That is what I wish to model for them.

I enjoy a drink every once in a while when I'm not pregnant. Some weeks I'll be on a mojito kick, and have 2-3 drinks in a week, and sometimes I won't drink for months at a time. Come to think of it, it's more of a "summer" thing for me. I honestly enjoy the taste of mixed drinks, wines, and beer. I'd drink Yuengling flavored soda if there was such a thing!

I think it's just fine for children to see a parent drink responsibly. It lets them know that drinking does not equal binge drinking or alcoholism, and showing them how to handle it responsibly sets a good example for them in adulthood.

wasn't hard to tell you were from PA but the thought of yuengling flavored soda is kinda nasty :rotfl:

LOL, yeah, I like weird flavored things. ;) Ok, maybe not soda, but Yuengling with no alcohol whatsoever would be awesome.
