 I think I need a "possible new area" board....
The saga continues for DH job search...we are in limbo w/one co., and he rec'd a call for another co., same city....Cincinnati, specifically Hamilton area.
While I utilize the web as much as I can, I am looking for helpers again. (sorry guys, one day we will have a new job and I can quit bugging you all ;) )
Anyway, looks like the schools are getting ready for a referendum/tax hike...been dealing w/that for 13 years here, so familiar, but does anyone have kids in the school system there? Looking for jr hi and HS. I heard that allergies are pretty bad there...DS suffers greatly now (chicago area) anyone have any insight? I read that termites can be an issue? Just looking into it since we have 2 possibilities in the same place...but I am also not geting my hopes up yet. This is so draining having to research everything as if you are going, only to possibly not get chosen. Also, would love to hear any positives. Like I said, we are in Chicago so are used to the climate etc. Would be a different time zone tho! And 5 hours closer to drive to WDW!:teeth: not to mention going to the football hall of fame when my man Dan is inducted!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

catsrule and shep are there, better think of another place :teeth:

I know nothing of Cincinnati, but never knew (I don't think I did, did I?) that you were in Chicago!!!!!! You have to come to a meet before you move, if you do. We are going to have one end of April, lots of DIS'ers!!!!!!

Hey Dan....yeah that's a big "if"....seems like we are spinning our wheels, but DH has to make a change soon or the men with the little white jackets are going to be coming for him:p  :p ! Not too many people think I'm in Chicago as I am always talking of Florida and most of my family is there, not to mention being a Miami Dolphins fan, not Da Bears. Change is heard tho, and DH likes it here, but so far the job activity has been elsewhere. At least there is activity!
Now PD, I do believe you're in Akron...aren't you? Play nice. I find Shep and Catsrule to be a PLUS to making the move.....
Seriously, we are looking for any info that can help us out...looking for school stuff, are you happy w/them...kids stressed out, drowning in homework, crowded...etc., y'know...the stuff you need to be prepared for.

TIA,

Pam

Just because the job is in Hamilton doesn't mean you have to live there--I'm sure there are tons of suburbs with good schools down there.

I don't know much about Cincinnati schools. I have been to Fairfield HS. It a huge school, graduating close to a 1000 students. The HS is beautiful and new. I know that this area is growing by leaps and bounds, lots of new housing developments. I know a couple of people from Cincinnati and the Catholic schools are very big. Most of the people I have met have gone to Catholic HS.

I've always thought that Cincinnati was a wonderful place, pretty and lots of things to do.

I lived in Mason for several years when I was a kid. My dad just moved from Mason two years ago. As far as I know, Mason has good schools. I do know that housing in Mason has gotten pretty spendy in the newer neighborhoods. They have a great amusement park there though LOL, not Disney of course, but fun nonetheless. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I work in Cincinnati (Hamilton County), but am not familiar with the schools since I live in KY. I know many individuals who live in Cincinnati, so I will try to get the scoop for you on the schools. I know there is the big Eastside Westside debate. It seems to me that the schools are always asking for tax increases.

Allergies and Sinus problems are big here. I am told it is because of the valleys. This year was really bad since it never got extremely cold.

N. KY is great;) Actually it seems you can get more house for your money there. We do have higher vehicle taxes than Ohio, but our purchase tax is a little lower than theirs (KY 6%, OH 6.5%). Kentucky went through an Education Reform Act about 8yrs ago...where it was more hands on and grades were combined. I am finding that many schools are no longer doing this. We do have portfolios that kids have to complete and send to the state, I believe 4th grade is one of those years.

My nephew goes to Mason Elementary and my SIL seems happy with it.

If I think of more I will send you a PM.

Thanks everyone for the replies....Believe, hands on is what I am looking for, my kids are both visual learners, and just seem more comfortable in a less structured setting. That is becomming less and less available I guess. I had heard about the allergy problems...DS suffers from this and gets shots weekly:(
I have also looked at Mason...worried about the housing cost tho....
it does look as tho we will have some options...how long does it take you to commute from KY to Hamilton?
Does anyone choose to live in Indiana?
