I grew up in New England and moved to Louisiana when I was 13. Saw creepy crawlies I never had before. There IS a difference between a German Roach and Palmetto or "water bugs" as people here usually call them. As others have said WDW is in Florida. No way too avoid certain native species. The little tree frogs at POR like to cling on the wall and on the outside of the doors at night and tried to come in with us when we came back to our room at night. Just part of being in the South!

I agree that I hate to see anyone being snarky or rude on the forums. However, in this case the OP DID ask for people's opinions on whether they should ask for compensation. Disney's management is usually wonderful about offerring some sort of compensation if they do something wrong that has impacted a guest's stay. In this case WDW didn't do anything wrong. That's what I think made some respond the way they did in MY opinion.

so I am currently in WDW at a deluxe hotel. we checked in this morning, and after returning to our room this afternoon i discovered a HUGE roach (about 3 inches long) in the shower. I called housekeeping because i didn't know what to do with. I was grossed out, but now that it's nighttime it's bothering me more! Is it likely there are more in the plumbing somewhere?! Would anyone have asked for compensation of some sort? I understand it's Florida, but talk about ruining night 1 in a $400 room!!

Actually it was probably closer to 2 inches than 3 inches (still looks big ) and most likely came up into the shower to escape from water. From what I understand you have had a lot of rain down there recently. The Palmetto bugs (usually these are American cockroaches) live outside, they usually only come inside by accident (flying through an open door or carried in on some object) or to escape water. Heavy rains can cause them to temporarily move inside structures in search of food.

When I lived in south Florida back in the mid 70's I watched a guy cut down a palmetto tree with a chain saw. He fired up the chainsaw and as soon as it made contact with the palmetto tree hundreds (maybe even thousands) of palmetto bugs erupted (can't think of a better descriptive term) from the fronds. So it was easy to see why they were called palmetto bugs.

In three years of living in south Florida the only times we ever saw the palmetto bugs inside the house were during extended periods of rain. It was a never ending battle with the German cockroaches but the palmetto bugs were never a real problem.

You are more likely to have a mosquito in your room at Disney than a palmetto bug, and if you wouldn't ask for compensation for a mosquito then you shouldn't ask for compensation for a palmetto bug.

During my trip last December, I found cockroaches in the refrigerator cabinet of our room. We were staying at CBR, and all it took was one phone call and they got ride of them for me. They did ask when I called if we were in a ground floor room, so I'm guessing they are more of a problem if you get a room on the bottom. It never dawned on me to ask for compensation, I just wanted them gone!

We were at a value resort (can't remember which) and walking from the parking lot to the building. All of a sudden my wife went, "OMG, is that a RAT?!? AAAAAAH!"

It was pretty close to the building and VERY large (for a rat.) I got a better look at it and realized it was an armadillo. Then my wife was all like, "REALLY? OMG, how CUTE! Let's get a better look!"

Love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm thinking the armadillo was very insulted to be mistaken for a rat!

I saw one in the middle of the night at the Poly in the bathroom, since then I always wear socks in any hotel room. We were on the third floor.

No guarantee there wouldn't be one in the next room. Yes, it is Florida. The ONLY way to make sure you don't have ANY creepy crawlies in ANY hotel room is to not vacation in Florida. And 'm sure, yes, it's probably true, you have bugs in your house. You might not see them but they are there.

Sorry to all the roach haters out there but what did the roach do? Did it attack you and bite you? It's just a bug. We would have gotten a cup, trapped the poor thing and released it outside.

I personally do not have any problems with other bugs, in fact I pick up spiders from our house and gently place them outside. I have no problems with Spiders, ants, silver fish, nats, moths, mosquitos, those bugs everyone talks about having in FL (lovebugs?) etc. I never said anything about not expecting bugs in FL.

What I do have a problem with is roaches and I definitely do not have any in my home! As to your question about what did the bug do, did you read my comment about the ear thing? That is disturbing!

Also, I think I was pretty clear in saying my request might be extreme. I just would not be able to sleep after that, knowing that they can and have crawled in peoples ears. Grossss!

There already was a post on here by a wife of an ER doc backing up what I said about the ears and that it happens more frequently then we think.

I responded to the OP saying she had a roach in her room. She said nothing about a palmetto bug. Relax!

I know bugs are a part of life. But I live in Canada and we don't have big bugs everywhere. I can understand why OP was upset about the bug. It would have creeped me out too. I understand its Florida and its gonna happen, just hope it never happens to me

Those critters can get into some very tight spots. Much like a rat or snake, they can squeeze into some seemingly impossibly small spaces.

I'm only seeing one post that could be described as remotely hostile. Everyone else is just sharing the fact that bugs are a part of life in Florida. Florida is still a huge hunk of swamp land, there is no getting rid of all the bugs and other creatures that call it home.

Sarcasm is defined as a cutting often ironic remark intending to wound or to make one a but of a joke. This post is full of that and over what???? people taking offense to others supposedly (no one knows whether it was or was not a roach other than the OP) mistaking a roach for a "palmetto bug."

And, I just love how in order to make their point they just kept adding in inferences to the original posts, which didn't even have anything to do with what was said.

Does it really bug (ha ha) those people, who made the sarcastic remarks, that much that it was necessary to be rude to get their point across?

With all the really horrible stuff that goes on in the world today, do we need to be sarcastic to someone simply for being grossed out by a roach?

As to what to do with it, get a huge wad of toilet tissue, pick it up and flush it and welcome to Florida.

I might mention it at the Front Desk, in case they need to spray but that is about all.

Sitting here reading this thread hopeing I am not going to regret requesting a 1st floor room at the Poly. I hate bugs and have to say in 12 trips to Florida last year was the first time I ever saw an insect in our room and that was a bee

EXACTLY. Good for you guys for being from the south and all but some of us are a little out of our element. I didn't expect a refund but I'm sure I wasn't very good at hiding how freaked out I was from the CM, so I'm thinking that might be why they offered?

That is the thing about message boards. The only tone we hear is the one in our heads. What you are reading as sarcasm I am reading as trying to joke about the subject. I have found that most posters do not mean any offence, and sometimes I am just reading things into the words that may not be meant.

Trust me, if the thread was getting out of hand or nasty, the Moderators would step in. You can't control how others post, only on how you react to it. Someone else stated that if they were offended by a post, they tried to read it with another tone, and that helps them to see that maybe no offence was intended. I think that is great advice.

Btw, Palmetto Bug--Huge stinkin Bug! Cockroaches--Small, icky, nasty bugs.

The bottom line is simply this is Florida, you are going to find bugs and critters all over the place, all the time. There is really no way to remove them (especially the bugs) 100%.

I think if you are paying $400 a night and you saw a huge roach and now it has you paranoid, there is nothing wrong (IMO) with asking the manager for a discount. You aren't paying that kind of money to be paranoid, wondering if there are lots more roaches in the room. If you asked for a discount and to be moved to another room, it really is no biggie. Conversely, if you just want to ask to be moved to another room and no discount that's fine-- just try and have a good time and forget about that roach. You are in Disney, the happiest place on earth. Also, if it were ME and that scenario happened, I would probably have taken a pic of it then showed the manager, and asked that I move rooms just for my peace of mind.
