Here it is - the OFFICIAL 2014 READING GOAL CHALLENGE THREAD

Any insight into Under the Dome? Thinking about reading it before the new season of the show starts.

I really enjoyed the book, but I couldn't watch the show. It was waaaaay too different, even who was married to who was all mixed up. So if you e already watched the first season of the show, I'm not sure how that may affect your reading of the book.

I read the book before the TV series came out and I liked them both. I like the book a lot more but that's almost always the case when books are turned into screenplays.

In this case, I consider the TV show to be a different story with a similar premise and characters who just happen to have the same names. You can't go into it with the expectation that one will enhance your enjoyment of the other.

13/30 Al Capp- This was a biography of the creator of the Lil Abner comic strip. The strip is before my time, but of course I know of it, but I became interested in Al Capp because Kickapoo Joy Juice is a popular soft drink where I currently live. I love the artwork on the can and occasionally I'll see the characters on a sign at an old stall. Anyway, Al Capp was a fairly vile individual, worse than I expected from the quick summary I read, but he did contribute quite a bit to our popular culture and even some of our sayings and words. The book was pretty interesting but nothing great.

I started The Witch Doctor's Wife and so far I love it.

#46 Aunt Dimity's Death by Nancy Atherton

I was tempted to get this based on mumloveseeyore's recommendation when I saw she loved The Potato Pie and Guernsey Literary Society and then when I saw Piglet'sPal2 also recommended it then I downloaded it straight away..

I enjoyed it very much and will be sending you both my bank details so you can contribute to me being able to download them all :rotfl:

It's pretty different from the show. Big Jim doesn't bother me nearly as much on the show as he did in the book. I enjoyed it until the ending.

Finished book #33 - Infected by Scott Sigler

Wow, great book! It's a quick read which is good b/c you won't want to put it down. It's a fast paced sci-fi/horror story which will make you start thinking twice about any rashes or bug bites you get. Be warned there are some gruesome parts though. This story pulled me in & I can't wait to read books 2 & 3!

A terrifying thriller that will crawl beneath your skin . . . and leave fresh blood on every page.
A mysterious disease is turning thousands of ordinary Americans into raving, paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors on strangers, their own families, and even themselves. And one morning, ex–football star Perry Dawsey awakens to find mysterious welts growing all over his body. Soon Perry finds himself acting and thinking strangely, hearing voices, fighting uncontrollable rage . . . he is infected. Worse, the disease wants something from him, something that could alter the fate of the human race.

After reading your synopsis I picked this up at the library. Wow! It really sucked me in and I ended up staying up half the night to finish it! I requested the sequel this morning and can't wait for it to get here.

It was good!

I'm thinking of reading the second one next.

I think I'll hold off on Under The Dome till the show airs, plus the waiting list at the library is pretty long.

Currently reading the novelization for Pacific Rim.

Finished book #34 - The Giver by Lois Lowry

This is a YA book that a friend recommended. I was really intrigued by this story of a boy & the community he lives in. The community reminded me of Divergent faction Abnegation. I did not care for the ending though. It ended too quickly & I was left wanting to know so much more. It's only 179 pages & I wish there was more info on how this community is possible & what happens to it at the end.

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Next book: Contagious (book 2 of Infected series)

Just FYI, I'm pretty sure The Giver is actually the start of a series, so if you're left wanting more you could always grab the next book. :)

#11/40: Long Knives by Charles Rosenberg

From Amazon:
Jenna James’s life has been smooth sailing since she left the high-powered law firm of Marbury Marfan. She’s happily ensconced as a professor at a prestigious law school, where she’s well liked by her students, coupled-up with a handsome colleague, and on track for tenure. But things take a shocking turn one morning when a student, Primo, comes to Jenna’s office seeking her advice about a treasure map he recently inherited. When Primo turns up dead and Jenna is suddenly the prime suspect in a murder investigation, everyone turns on her. Desperate for help, she calls on two old friends: Robert Tarza, her old law partner from Marbury Marfan, and Oscar Quesana, an odd-duck solo practitioner. The three race to save Jenna’s career—and perhaps her life—in this whip-smart thriller of treasure maps, murder, and law school politics.

3/5 stars

It started out okay, but bounced around with characters that I found myself not caring about.

Just finished #21/60 "The Widows of Wichita County" about 5 women brought together by an oil rig catastrophe. Four of them are widowed, and the fifth one has a husband who's burned beyond recognition, barely clinging to life and hospitalized for many many months. For me this was a 5/5 star book. The ending was different from what I expected but still enjoyable. The author was Jodi Thomas, whom I read once, years ago, but now I'm looking for more of her books to read.

Deadly Echoes by Phillip Donlay

Another book I won on Goodreads and really the first book I would buy.
Fast paced and very current with good action and suspense.
I give it 4 stars and in the future might check out another book with the main character. Enjoyed it much more than I thought I was going to.

Two of my books are doing Goodreads Giveaways

The rest of the series will give you at least some perspective on questions that went unanswered in The Giver. That is one of my favorite YA series, and I am looking forward to the movie with a mix of excitement and fear that they'll totally screw it up.
