Really liked this one. Thriller with an Amish backdrop.

This is the author that wrote From the Mixed-Up-Files of Mrs Basil. E. Frankweiler. She is a great writer. A kids book so a quick read but funny.

Goal 72

#35 How To Be A Good Wife by Emma Chapman

"I know what my husband would say: that I have too much time on my hands; that I need to keep myself busy. That I need to take my medication. Empty nest syndrome, he tells his friends at the pub, his mother. He's always said I have a vivid imagination..."

'Marta & Hector have been married for a long time. Through the good and bad; through raising a son and sending him off to life after college. So long, in fact, that Marta finds it difficult to remember her life before Hector. He has always taken care of her, and she has always done everything she can to be a good wife---as advised by a dog eared manual given to her by Hector's aloof mother on their wedding day.'

The first few pages, I was wondering if I wanted to continue reading but then the book took on some slightly sinister undertones & I was hooked. Very good book. Kinda creepy. But very good.

Since my last post I have finished:

17) The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann. Alex and Aaron are twins who are about as different as two people can be. Aaron is a Wanted, and Alex is an Unwanted...sent to his death in the lake of boiling oil. The Unwanteds are not actually put to death as the citizens of Quill believe. Instead they are brought to Artime, where their creativity is celebrated.

Another book my children and I read together. I enjoyed the idea of this book. It could have been better. It came off a little like a copycat of others in the same genre.

18) Hot Blooded by Lisa Jackson. A thriller set in New Orleans. A radio psychologist is being harassed while a serial killer stalks the streets. Not terrible, not amazing, just eh.

19) Kingdom Keepers #1:Disney After Dark by Ridley Pearson. It took me at least 1/3 of the way through the book to start enjoying it. It started slowly, it wasn't that well written, it jumped around...but it got better. We'll read more.

20) Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. Stephen King is one of my favorites. This book had me in tears a few times. Redemption for Danny. If you read and enjoy SK's work, try this one.

#13 - Thought I Knew You - Kate Moretti - this has been on my wish list and price dropped to .99 on Amazon. Her husband vanishes & she has figure out how to go on while not knowing and finding clues about what may have happened. I really enjoyed it but wished the author would have gone into more details later on in the book. I don't want to give anything away but there were a few good questions that made you think during this one.

#14 - The Long Way Home - Karen McQuestion - cute book, enjoyed this on a rainy Sunday. 4 women who barely know each other go on a road trip together. People are way nicer than reality in several parts of this but it held my interest and was fun to read.

Patricia Cornwell Cause Of Death

Dr. Kay Scarpetta plunges into the murky depths of a ship graveyard to recover the very human remains of Ted Eddings, an investigative reporter. Together with her niece Lucy and police captain Pete Marino, Scarpetta will follow the scents of death and violence to the heart of sinister darkness.

2014 Reading Challenge Goal: 26 Books

April Update:
Book #9: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
I think this was probably the best book that I've read so far this year. I'm not usually into medieval fantasy so that surprised me a bit. It is larger than its genre and it is worthy of its fandom. All of the fantasy character archetypes are there but with unexpected depth. The intrigue built around these families and their struggles for power kept me locked in for 800 pages. I never felt like the plot was dragging but I was frequently tempted to flip ahead and sneak a peek at how a particular situation would resolve itself. I'm sure you've been there, you want to read faster but you're afraid you'll miss an important detail if you do. It was that kind of good.

I watched season one of the HBO series after I finished the book and didn't care for it as much. There was plenty of sex in the book, the show adds gratuitous sex on top of that at the cost of some back story and character development.

Currently Reading: Green by Ted Dekker
The last in The Circle series. It's a fantasy story where almost everything is, sometimes thinly veiled, religious metaphor.

So only one book in April but Goodreads says that I'm still ahead of my goal for the year. :thumbsup2

Just finished book #15/30 Hollow City. I enjoyed it more than the first and will continue the series when the next book is available.

Next up is The Book Thief. I just got an email this morning that it was available from my library. Perfect timing. :)

#32 - The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters

from Amazon:
This is the greatest account of bold manhood in maritime history. This is the true story of the RMS Titanic as told by the people who knew.

My dad had a 1912 copy of this book sitting on his bookshelf, it apparently had belonged to my granddaddy. The book was good but very repetitive at times --- repeating the same stats that it had just stated in the previous chapter.

Goal 72

#36 Gated by Amy Christine Parker

Do the Gates keep the unchosen out or the chosen in?
Pioneer is her leader.
Will is her intended.
The end of the world is near.

This was an average YA book. Pretty predictable. Pioneer is the religious leader, they all live in a gated commune type place. The end of the world is coming.....

Did you know there is a sequel planned for this one? For some reason I can't wrap my brain around that. Just did not feel like a sequel was needed.

No, I didn't know. If the sequel is as predictable as this one, I could write it myself, lol.
Gated would have probably been better for me if I hadn't already read so many books with the same type scenario. All in all it wasn't a bad book but I don't think it needs a sequel either.

James Patterson Cross My Heart

James Patterson raises the stakes to their highest level, ever-when Alex Cross becomes the obsession of a genius of menace set on proving that he is the greatest mind in the history of crime.
Detective Alex Cross is a family man at heart—nothing matters more to him than his children, his grandmother, and his wife Bree. His love of his family is his anchor, and gives him the strength to confront evil in his work. One man knows this deeply, and uses Alex's strength as a weapon against him in the most unsettling and unexpected novel of James Patterson's career.
When the ones Cross loves are in danger, he will do anything to protect them. If he does anything to protect them, they will die.
CROSS MY HEART is the most powerful Alex Cross novel ever, propelled by the ever-ingenious mind of James Patterson, the world's #1 bestselling writer.

Yeah I agree. It wasn't bad it just wasn't really memorable in any way. After I closed the book I was done thinking about it, and it's not one I'll reread in the future. I can't imagine reading the sequel.

Finished book #33 - Infected by Scott Sigler

Wow, great book! It's a quick read which is good b/c you won't want to put it down. It's a fast paced sci-fi/horror story which will make you start thinking twice about any rashes or bug bites you get. Be warned there are some gruesome parts though. This story pulled me in & I can't wait to read books 2 & 3!

A terrifying thriller that will crawl beneath your skin . . . and leave fresh blood on every page.
A mysterious disease is turning thousands of ordinary Americans into raving, paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors on strangers, their own families, and even themselves. And one morning, ex–football star Perry Dawsey awakens to find mysterious welts growing all over his body. Soon Perry finds himself acting and thinking strangely, hearing voices, fighting uncontrollable rage . . . he is infected. Worse, the disease wants something from him, something that could alter the fate of the human race.

Next book: The Giver

Any insight into Under the Dome? Thinking about reading it before the new season of the show starts.

My son and I read the book in anticipation of the series last year. There were so many differences I couldn't continue watching the series after the second episode! DH and my parents never read the book and enjoyed the series. I would say it was a pretty good book even though I am usually not a Stephen King fan.
