Here it is - the OFFICIAL 2014 READING GOAL CHALLENGE THREAD

6/150 How to climb Mont Blanc in a Skirt by Mick Conefrey. Stories about female explorers and travelers fron Victorian and Edwardian ladiea who crossed deserts with silver candlesticks and writing desks to modern day mountaineers and sailors. This was fascinating, i really enjoyed it.
7/150 Last Bus to Woodstock. by colin Dexter The first Inspector Morse mystery. I downloaded this because a set of the first three was on offer, it was a complex enjoyable mystery . I liked it but it didnt grip me the way the tv adaptations did.

Finished #5 of 52 last night - Open Season by Linda Howard. From Amazon:

"She's hunting for a mate...

and there's no more playing it safe.

Daisy Minor is bored. Worse than that, she's boring. A plain, small-town librarian, she's got a wardrobe as sexy as a dictionary and hasn't been on a date in years. She's never even had a lukewarm love affair, let alone a hot one. So when she wakes up on her thirty-fourth birthday and wonders how it is that she still lives with her widowed mom and spinster aunt while her friends have all gotten married and started families, she decides it's time to get a life -- and a sex life. And as far as she can tell, good girls don't attract nearly as many men as bad ones.

Can a lifelong good girl turn bad? No, not exactly.

But they can pretend, right?

One makeover later, Daisy has transformed herself into a party girl extraordinaire. She's letting her hair down, dancing the night away at clubs, and laughing and flirting with men for the first time in, well, forever. With a new lease on her own place, she's found a new lease on life -- and it's open season for man hunting.

But on her way home late one night, Daisy sees something she's not supposed to see. Suddenly the target of a killer, she's forced to put her manhunt on hold. But the very moment she stops looking might be the moment she finds what she's wanted all along. Trouble is, before he can share her life, he might just have to save it."

I really liked it. It was a quick and entertaining read. I found the author to have the same style as Nora Roberts, so if you like her books, you'd like this. I'd give it 4*.

Added this to my list, sounds great!! Thanks for the recommendation :thumbsup2:

Has anyone ever read the book "Dented Cans"? Supposedly it's about a trip to WDW. Amazon has it on Kindle for 99 cents. Since my ears perk up at any book involving Disney, I was wondering how this one was.

With Amazon Prime, you can borrow it for free, so I'll put it in my queue.

Goal 72

#3 Unseen by Karin Slaughter
Latest in the Will Trent/Sara Linton books and doesn't disappoint. Karin Slaughter has been one of my top favorite authors since I read her first book.

Only curious: but with Sherlock Holmes can you pick through the stories on their own? With the American airing of the BBC series coming up I wanted to read the cases along with the episodes but want to be sure I won't be missing anything.

3/30: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Someone else has already reviewed this one, but I did want to add what struck me is their pursuit of the ending of a fictitious novel in the book...it ends mid-sentence when the main character dies, leaving Hazel with so many unanswered questions about the characters who survive. As much as I'd love to go into it, I can't stand the thought of spoiling it for anyone else. ;)

Next up needs to be Revealed, the latest in the House of Night vampire series. I really need to finish it so I can donate it to my school's library.

Finished book #6 - Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

This is a great book! I definitely recommend it. The story is told in 2 time settings about 2 orphan girls: One story takes place in 1929 when Niamh becomes an orphan & is sent on the orphan train & the 2nd story is told in 2011 w/Molly, a foster teen, who meets Niamh (91 yrs old) to realize how similar their stories are. In the 1920's, when children became orphans, they were sent on the orphan train to the midwest states. The train would stop at city after city where people came to pick out the children they wanted free of charge. There were no background checks or anything on these people & of course most of the children ended up in not so welcoming homes as indentured servants. This is what happens to Niamh. Such a moving story! I do have one complaint though, but I can't explain it w/o giving something away. I will just say that after everything she went through, she would never have made the decision she did later.

Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to aging out out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse...
As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian arent as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance.
Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life answers that will ultimately free them both.
Rich in detail and epic in scope, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience, of unexpected friendship, and of the secrets we carry that keep us from finding out who we are.

Next book: Return to Tradd Street (book 4)

I just finished two of my thirty,

1 Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell. It's the first book in her Kay Scarpetta series. I read it about 10 years ago and loved it then and was just as great this time around.

2 The Duck Commander Family. This was the last one of the three I needed to read. I love the show and the books are all great.

3/50 - Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James

Well...I've read some pretty good fanfiction over the years and am a fairly easy to please reader in general. But the writing in the Fifty Shades Trilogy is absolutely atrocious. I believe E.L. James lifted her fic pretty much verbatim and just changed the names before publishing. This really should have gone through a rewrite/overhaul first. It made for some cheesy reading, which I like once in a while but I can't say I necessarily enjoyed these books all that much.

Just finished book #3/50-Labor Day. It was okay. I am still waiting to read my first great book of 2014. I think this will be a better movie than book. I dont know if I have ever said that before. :goodvibes

Just finished book 4 of 45, Darkness First by James Hayman.

I'm not sure if this book is in paperback/hardback format or if it's only an ebook. It was in the nook store for $2.99. I'm a sucker for cheap books in the nook store!!

A detective's best friend is injured after witnessing a murder, so Maggie Savage goes back to her home town to work on the case. It involves the theft of 40,000 oxycontin pills from Canada and the fallout from that crime. The main case is the murder of a young girl, and how she connects to the theft. I figured out the 'bad guy' pretty quickly, but it was still entertaining.
I did really like the main character, Maggie Savage, and I would read one of the other two books by this author that focus on Maggie and her partner McCabe. They have a relationship that intrigues me.

I rate it a 3.5/5

Cheap nook books are my downfall!! I love them! This sounds like a good one- I may have to check them out.
Has anyone read the heather Wells series by Meg Cabot? I'm working on book one and I must admit that it's going slow. Is the series worth reading? (I think it's only at 5 books...)
