We will be going through Detroit in June and have heard great things about the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. We will only have one day and would like to know if you can see both in a day or is it just too much area to cover. I think they are open from around 9-5.

Should we attempt both, or is one better than the other and should we focus on that one.

Thanks for you help!

Laura

I would not do both. wiat until the day you plan on going and then decide on which one based on rain, temps etc.

We have done the museum and village a few times. If you stay the whole day you can do both. There were lots of things to look at both places, lot's of fun. The kids may enjoy the museum more, when we were there last they had some hands on things you could do. Have fun.

We were there when my kids were about 6 & 8. They LOVED Greenfield Village. We were there from 11-5, when it closed, and we didn't see and do everything. We didn't go to the Henry Ford.
Have a great trip!

I went to Greenfield Village back in 1994 and it took all day---well worth it.

You can do both in a day, but I wouldn't advise it if you have young kids. We did both in a day a couple of years ago and it just made for a very long day and really wore the kids out. Both the Village and the Museum are great for different reasons. Personally I prefer the Village because I love going into historical houses and thinking about the great people in history that lived/worked there. The Village has a beautiful carousel, a train, a paddlewheel boat, horse and carriages, and Model T cars that you can get rides in. The kids really enjoyed that. The Museum has some very interesting items as well (various trains, a diner, various models of campers (and how they have changed), the bus Rosa Parks rode in, the chair Lincoln was shot in, and of course various cars, as well as other items from history. The museum also has an IMAX theater.
Have fun!

I would not try to do both in the same day.

If the weather's bad, definitely do the museum over the village. The village is not so exciting to offset rain and cold, if ykwim.

I live in the area, so I would only go to the village if there was a special event. It is so much more fun if the historical actors are there. Unless you're really fascinated by walking through historical houses.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I'll have to talk to my kids to see what appeals to them. It may just come down to the weather on that day I guess!

I LOVE Greenfield Village.

We're Henry Ford Members, we make always make special reservations for their special events at Greenfield Village (Halloween, Holiday Nights..etc..)

The Museum is nice too, they have a new exhibit focusing on the good (and bad) of the United states from the time of the Revolutionary War (a LOT of neat stuff in it!!).

They also finally gave Lincolns chair it's much deserved due too in the new exhibit. For those of us who go frequently, you'll remember they have had the chair that Lincoln was shot in just shoved in different corners of the museum where they had room. My dh said that one time they even put it by the restrooms! :rolleyes2

Here's a webpage. Henry Ford

Ohh, and be sure if you go to Greenfield village to go to the Tin Type studio . It has a signed photo of Walt. :earsboy:
