Total Guitar Magazine, A European publication, voted Jimi Hendrix as the Greatest Guitarist ever. With Jimmy Paige second and Eric Clapton third. What do you think? Do you agree? Who's your number one? Who else belongs on the short list? :bounce:

Hard to argue those. I'd rank Hendrix #1 too...

Some others I consider (I'm limiting choices to electric guitarists) - in no particular order.....

Stevie Ray Vaughn
Steve Howe
Jeff Beck
Carlos Santana
Eddie Van Halen
David Gilmour
Duane Allman (Was it Duane or Eric on Layla?)
B.B. King
Skunk Baxter
Keith Richards

WE still miss ya, bro:( :( :( ........

I think SVR would be #2.

OK, DH, who knows EVERYTHING there is to know about Rock'n'Roll, says this:

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Eric Clapton
3. Jeff Beck
4. Keith Richards
5. Mick Taylor
6. Stevie Ray Vaughn
7. Pete Townsend

OK,

Here are mine:

1) Clapton
2) Hendrix
3) Vaughn
4) Beck
5) Paige

After that Santana, Townsend, Gilmour, BB King in an unknown order. Also really enjoy Steve Howe, Mike Rutheford, Steve Hacket, Joe Walsh, even Prince (as a guitar player) but those really aren't in the same league.

Have to think about Skunk Baxter....hadn't thought of him.

All of these are great guitar folks. I would add Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and Chuck Berry.

George Harrison is my favorite, but I concur with Jimi as the best.
No quibbles with any of the others posted here either. Props to Dan for thinking of Chuck Berry. Did anyone mention Les Paul?

I haven't seen George Harrison on anyone's list. He was certainly WELL up there.

While I'm a great Stones fan, I don't think Keith Richards is a good enough player to be on the list.

Hendrix, Clapton, Paige, Knopfler . . . they all certainly belong on such a list.

By the way, in a few weeks we'll be in Seattle visiting the EMP - Experience Music Project -- Paul Allen's multi-million dollar homage to Jimi Hendrix (and other rockers).

My top 5 would be:

1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Stevie Ray Vaughn
3) Jimmy Paige
4) Eddie Van Halen
5) Chuck Berry

Eddie Van Halen....

Les Paul... I had the priviledge of seeing him live, many years ago.... he was at a local radio station which was live at an Atlantic City casino....

I'm ashamed to admit at the time " Who is that old geezer?" :o

(To qualify, I was 18 at the time)

Just thought of another one.....Chet Atkins should at least be among the "pioneers" if not among the "greatest".

This one is far afield from where we started, but one of my favorite guitarists is Michael Hedges. Primarily acoustic, he was (he was killed in a car wreck a few years ago) an amazing talent.

If you'd like to get a good taste, check out his Breakfast in the Field CD.

I cant beilive no one has said Bob Dylan yet. Hes got to be in the top 5 or at least top 10. My list goes

1.Hendeix
2.Claptin
3.Paige
4.Dylan
5.Santana

I dont know anything but thats who id pick.
