Hi all,
Anyone have any great speedy cures for poison ivy/sumac (we think). My son's got it - mostly chest/belly/waitline area, but the itch is driving him crazy. Trying not to itch/spread it. Pharmacist recommended benadryl and calamine lotion on the blisters. Any other ideas?? thanks

Try zanfel. What causes poison ivy is the urishol on the plant. You can get the rash even from dead plants or from touching clothing, pets etc that has come into contact with the plant. If it is in the blood stream then a rash can appear in a scratched area.

Myth: the oozing of the blisters does not cause the poison ivy to spread. It is the oil from the plant. So if you came heavily in contact in one area, but lightly in other areas the rash may show up several days apart which leads to the belief that the oozing spread it.

Also, you can give him an antihistamine like zyrtec or benadryl since it is an allergic reaction. Benadryl may help him sleep at night.

Calagel - works on all itches. I really suffer from poison Ivy/Sumac/Oak, but this keeps me from feeling any itch. Finding it was a Godsend for me and my family.

Another vote for Zanfel. Expensive but definitely worth it. I believe Walgreens sells a generic store brand of Zanfel that is much cheaper.

Zanfel is the best! We have been using it for years and I go through a tube a summer! That stuff is truly amazing.:thumbsup2 and expensive.

My husband always gets very bad Poison Sumac in our yard. Last year, someone he knows told him about a product called TECNU which you can buy in the grocery store or Wal-Mart OTC section. This year, he started to get Poison Sumac again, he used this product and got a minimal rash/itching instead of the extreme case (requring prednisone) like he usually gets.

I used to get poison ivy almost every summer when I was a kid. Don't ask me how I managed to find it since I couldn't tell the difference from other plants and still can't  I used to go to the doctor and get a shot (which I hated b/c I can't stand needles).
