Working as a Customer Service Rep for Verizon, the most common question and complaint we get are from people that are going or coming back from vacation.
We always tell people to make sure and update their software. It's easy to do and free. Once you get to your destination, simply dial *228 and choose option 2. This will make sure that the towers in the area you are in are up to date.
Sometimes if you don't do that, you might have a problem using your phone in an area outside of your home.
Also, make sure that if you have the location set, that you turn if off the "home" location. If you don't, you also won't be able to use the phone outside of your home area.
