Here is my report..
> Frederick Douglass writes a very powerful and moving account of his
life as a slave and how he escaped slavery to become interested in the
anti-slavery reform and how he spoke against slavery
> to try and help other slaves. Frederick Douglass purpose in
writing the Narrative of his Life is to offer a true account of slavery and
the American Slave system. He wants the readers to understand the
horrors of slavery and the true injustice that slaves must Indore.. Frederick
Douglass also wants to help other slaves that might not be free and he
tries to help them by speaking against slavery and writing about his
life as a slave. He accomplishes his goal of exposing the horrors of
slavery by giving many details of his life as a slave starting at the very
young age of six. The reader cannot help but to feel disgusted as they
read about the cruelty of leaving a six year old boy in the hands of
slave owners who give him little food and whip his family members. You
feel angry at slave owners as he writes about how slaves received a
monthly allowance of food and a yearly clothing allowance. Slave children
did not receive, shoes, jackets, or trousers and many went almost
> naked. There were no beds given to slaves and slaves were whipped
with a large hickory stick if not ready to start their work on the field
by the sound of the horn. He describes the cruelty of slave owners
whipping women in front of their mothers and having them watch their
mothers bleed and suffer. His frequent whippings in the hand of Mr. Covey and
the exhausting long hours that he worked in the heat or cold allow the
reader to feel hatred toward the slave owners. Frederick paints a
picture of the cruelty and injustice that slave children and men and women
endured by their slave owners. The details he offers about his life and
the life of other slaves expose slavery as utterly wrong and extremely
sad. His quest to help other slaves is accomplished in his book by
exposing the true facts of slavery and helping to steer the opinions of
other Americans that may not truly understand slavery. This book was
published in 1845, when slavery was still prominent and there was a
> real need for the truth about slavery to be told. There was a very
real need for his book at that time to help slaves gain justice and
equality and to expose slavery for what it really was.
>
> Frederick Douglass task of writing a Narrative of his Life is
accomplished by giving the reader a look into his life from birth until
after he escapes slavery. His chronological account of his life helps the
author in his task of exposing slavery as wrong and explaining what the
life of a slave is like from the early years to adulthood. As he
describes his life as a young boy the reader cannot help but to compare it to
their life as a child. As a young child Frederick Douglass realized
that he did not
> have the privilege of knowing how old he was and that white
children did know there age. You wonder why a child would be denied the simple
right to know how old they are and you come to understand how slavery
robs a person of their identity. He tells of how it was rumored that his
father was his master and you feel outrage that a father would allow
such mistreatment of a son. His account of living with Master Hughs and
his family and learning to read and write from his mistress
> allow one to understand how a deprived slave could write such a
literate account of his life and
> inspire others. Frederick Douglas relies on his memories of his
life to write his book. There are no pictures, except of Frederick
Douglass on the cover. His account of his life and the details he provides are
enough to give a clear picture of slavery. Frederick makes reference to
the slave code
> which were laws pertaining to the legal status of slaves and free
blacks and included punishments
> for crimes committed by blacks. The slave code is a source of
reference that backs Fredericks
> claims of whippings and inequality of whites and blacks. The author
does not use graphs or tables,
> only a very well written account of his life from birth to the time
after he escapes slavery. Each chapter is an account of Fredericks
life as a slave at different ages and points in his life and how
> his experiences with his slave owners impacted his life and his
need to seek freedom from slavery.
> When Douglass escapes to the North he doesnt offer evidence or
specific details of how he escaped
> because he does not want to hinder the future escape of other
slaves. The way he escaped is still used and he is opposed to anyone
revealing how they escaped. Frederick gives good reason for not wanting to
reveal his sources in this instance. Frederick cites The Liberator. as an
abolitionist newspaper which helped him become acquainted with the
anti-slavery movement. He also cites
> that in 1841,while attending a Nantucket anti-slavery convention he
spoke against slavery in an effort to help other slaves.
>
> I would highly recommend this book to others as I found the book
very interesting and surprisingly
> very moving. Frederick Douglass definitely persuaded me that
slavery strips a person from their identity and that life as a slave is worse
then I had believed or imagined. His ambition to learn to read and
write is inspiring and his courage to tell his story and help others slaves
even though he was a fugitive allows you to respect this truly amazing
person. The details of his childhood and young adulthood allow you to
feel great compassion for him and to make comparisons between your life
in his. I found myself feeling lucky to have not had to endure his
sufferings and life as a slave. I feel anger and hatred toward slave owners
because of the accounts that Frederick describes in his narrative. I
have a better understanding of slavery and the struggles that slaves
experienced after reading this book. This was a fantastic book I would
recommend it to anyone, especially those who want a better understanding of
the history of slavery in America.
So can somebody explain to me how exactly i make a class handout between the book i read and my paper i wrote, i just need alittle more explaining.. i think im confused because school starts tomorrow and i waited until the very last minute to even think about these class handouts.. all help is greatly appreciated
