A little background, my son had some dental work done today. He had two baby eye teeth pulled.

This evening while his upper lip was still numb he accidently bite on it. Well, now it is VERY VERY swollen, about 3x its normal size.

Of course the dentist office was close but I called the ER and they told me just to ice it.

Anyway my son does not want to go to school with this huge fat lip. I told him we will see what it looks like in the normal. Well I just checked on him sleeping and his lip is still huge. :(

DH says I should just keep him home. He thinks other kids might tease him about it. He says tomorrow is Friday and just keep him home and his lip will have all weekend to go down. Even if it is still a little swollen on Monday it won't be nearly as bad as it is now. It is pretty bad, he can't talk that good because his lip is in the way. (poor kid)

I am uncertain about it. I mean what if he fell and got a black eye or a swollen lip that way?
But then again I know how kids can tease other kids

If it makes a difference we are talking about Kindergarten here.

I am just so torn. I am curious what other parents would do?
I guess I will sleep on it and read what others have to say tomorrow morning ;)

Let him stay home. What's one day of Kdg. in the grand scheme of things?
If you make him go and someone makes fun of him, he'll always remember the day "Mom made me go to school and ALL the kids made fun of me!" (don't forget the exageration tone when reading this quote) ;)

By Monday, he'll be so much better, and instead he'll remember the day "Mom let me stay home because I had a fat lip and I watched TV and ate ice cream all day".

If he doesnt miss a lot of school and hes uncomfortable I would just keep him home. although I think my son (4) would think a fat lip was cool??

Truthfully - I would keep him home. If he went to school and the kids did tease him, it would undermine his confidence and he wouldn't feel comfortable at school. As important as school is - this is a good reason to keep him home. But that's my opinion.

In Kindergarten let him stay home. His gums and mouth will be sore and it could probably use some pain meds during the day to make him more comfortable.

Black eyes / bruising are usually more of an attention getter than something to tease about so if he wakes up and that is the only issue not a big deal but keep him home if he's not feeling 100%.

I would let him stay home, poor kid. Since he is only in Kindergarden and if it isn't a problem with someome to watch him, keep him home. Kids can be mean but even so he will probally have to answer that what happened to your lip question a hundred times. Hope he feels better.

I would wait and see how it looks in the AM.

Have you given him any advil or anti-inflamitory? It will help with pain and help the swelling go down.

I would let him stay home, if it is really making him feel that unconfrontable.

Yes, let him stay home. Missing a day of kindergarten won't hurt. Just don't make a habit of him missing lots of school. Kids can tease and be very mean. Why even chance that someone will tease him.

I also agree with "keep him home" and do something fun (the ice cream idea sounded great!)

The only thing I would consider is - would he be messing up a perfect attendance award by missing tomorrow? That would be the only thing I would consider.

A special day with mom- definitely would be better than being teased because of a fat lip.

I am not a parent but I am a teacher and I say let him stay home if it looks bad in the morning unless you have any reason to send him i.e. misses alot of school. If it was highschool it might be different but for his age I don't think it will make too much of a difference.

Well I get the bad Mom award but I say send him. It will be down. Pulling baby teeth are no big deal heck I sent my DD back to school after her appointment. My DS went to school the morning after he broke his nose. I would be more annoyed if I found out the kids teased him, that is not tolerated in schools anymore at least around here. Usually they are the "star" 'cause they have something neat going on. I don't think he will miss too much work but I don't encourage my kids to stay home unless they really can't do the work at school because of illness and a swollen lip wouldn't interfere with his thinking.

yup :goodvibes

I'd let mine stay home....(1st grade teacher here BTW).

Let him stay home. If he bit his lip that bad, it's gonna hurt to eat and talk. I'd keep him home and give him tylenol regularly and keep him comfortable.

I'd let him stay home. He might have a bit of discomfort from the extractions, and if he's feeling not so hot and self conscious, he's not going to be in a state of mind to learn. It's one day, it's Friday, it the end of the school year when acedemics are starting to wind down anyhow.

Spend some quality time with him. :goodvibes

Take him to Disney World :thumbsup2

Any excuse to go to Disney World is a good one.... also a fat lip! :teeth:

(Only Goofing around so no hate mail please)

Another teacher here and I say let him stay home!

Thanks everyone. :teeth:

He isn't awake yet but I did check on him and his lip is still pretty big.
He really did a number on it. I guess you really can't feel when you hurt yourself when you are numbed up. Of course he had 4 shots of Novocain so he was pretty numbed up.

I work at home so it isn't a problem keeping him home

He did miss 1.5 days about 2 wks ago when he was in the hospital for an asthma attack but that has been the only school he has missed this year.
Fridays are kind of fun days at school anyway. That is when they have P.E. and Library. He is in an advance math class but they don't go to that on Fridays. They have reading time everyday but he brought home the book they are working out of so I can sit down and read with him today.

I guess I will see how he feels when he wakes up. Just from looking at it, it does look pretty painful. I can't see too well because I didn't turn on his bedroom light but it may be a bit black n' blue now.
